Description
'A/Patented Sept.. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES R'UFUS KING, 0F PLAINVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIG-NOR TO BUGBEE & .NILESk 1508,33@ PATENT OFFICE.
OOMPANY, 0F NORTH ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLASP.
Application leg January 15, 1924. Serial No. 686,257.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RUFUs KING, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clasps and pertains more especially to clasps employed for adustably connecting the ends of ribbon racelets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a clasp which has an improved form of female member of integral or one-piece construction throughout, and further to provide novel means for protecting the male member and for concealing the snap connection between the male and the female members by means of a part of the ribbon.
The invention still further aims to provide a device of this type which is of simple and inexpensive construction and which at the same time effectively holds the parts in connected relation.
The invention has still further and other objects which will be'later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure l, is a plan view of the parts assembled, the ribbon bracelet being shown in fragment:
figure 2, is a section on line 2-2 of Figure l,
Figure 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Figure l;
Figure 4L, is a rear elevation of the male member and l Figure 5, is a similar view of the female member.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a male member is employed which includes a plate-like body 1 preferably of curved form which may be ornamented on its outer face as desired. A stem or shank 2 is carried by the central portion of the body l and is formed at its outer end with a head 3 which latter is preferably of the somewhat arrow-like cross section depicted in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The female member is likewise formed of a metal plate 4 and is provided with a slot 5 at its center, the slot 5 forming a pair of arms 6 having notches or enlargements 6 to receive the head 3. The material on the vouter sides of the arms is bent or curved inwardly tohform a pair of opposed guards v 7, which latter as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings are disposed on opposite sides of` the head 3 and projects outwardly beyond the free outer end of the head 3 sofas to protect the latter and to conjointly form smooth surfaces which engage the end A of the ribbon bracelet. 'Ihe guards 7 are formed by slitting the platel along the generally U-shaped lines 8` and by then bending the vmetal resultant from the slitting into Athe form as shown in Figure 2,
aforementioned slitting of the plate 4 also permits the opposed arms 6 ofthe female member to resiliently engage the head 3 and secure the latter against movement. plate l is formed with a slot 10 to receive the opposite end B of the ribbon bracelet, which latter is sewed as shown at 11.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there are no movable parts whatever involved in the construction, the two members being of one piece formation, and having the male and female members thereof completely concealed and protected.
The notches 6 afford end walls which engage the head 3 and hold the latter from movement along the length of the slot 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is 1. In a clasp, a male member having a head a female member having a pair of arms the inner edges of which are spaced and notched to conjointly receive the head, the outer sides of the arms being curved outwardly and towards each other and forming guards disposed on opposite sides of the head and projecting beyond the latter, the female member having slots on the outer sides of the arms, to receive a ribbon therethrough, the part of the ribbon between said slots being engaged over the curved outer sides of the guards to conceal and protect the guards and the head, i
They
Q. In a clasp, a male member having a head, a female member having a pair of arms the inner edges of which are formed to conjointly engage the head, the outer sides of the arms extending beyond the head on opposite sides thereof and forming guards, and means to hold a ribbon onto the female member and in engagement with the guards so that the ribbon extends across the space between the guards and conceals and protects the latter and the head.
8. ln a clasp, a male member having` a head, a female member formed of a Jlate having opposed slits and the material between the slits formed to provide a pair of arms which receive ythe male member therebetween, the outer sides of the arms being curved inwardly towards each other to pro vide guards which lie on opposite sides of the head and which project outwardly7 beyond the latter, the slits being formed to receive a ribbon therethrough and with the latter engaged over the guards to protect and conceal the latter and the head of the male member.
l. In a clasp, a male member having` a head, a female member provided with a pair of arms of substantially concavo-convezr` cross-section, the inner sides of the arms being formed to receive and engage the head of the male member therebetween and the outer sides of the arms projecting outwardly beyond the head in enclosing relation there to, and means to hold a ribbon onto the female member and in engagement with the outer sides of the arms.
5. In a. clasp, a male member having a head, a female member having a slot forming a pair of arms which receive the head therebetween and having a pair of slits arranged on opposite sides of the first named slot, the material. between the slot and each of the slits being` curved inwardly towards each other so as to form guards which latter project outwardly beyond the head and receive the latter therebetween, the slit portions providing slots through which a ribbon may be passed to engage with the guards to conceal and protectl the latter and the head.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
