w. L. SAXER Box LIDYOR COVER HOOK Filed Jan. 4. 1924 Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
UNITED. STATES v WILLIAM L. SAXER, F DUSHORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Box LID on oovnn' HOOK.
Application filed January 4, 1924. SerialNo. .cere'saa.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM L. SAXER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Dushore, in the county of Sullivan and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Lid or Cover Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to box lid or cover hooks and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a hook especially adapted to be attached to the cover of a rough box, used by undertakers, and permits the use ofa strap to lower the cover in place whereby the cover is properly positioned without requiring an attendant to descend into the grave. The hook is easily and quickly attached to the lid of the box and the straps which are used in conjunction with the hook are passed through the hook and may be easily removed from the hook when the lid is in position upon the box. The hook is strong 2 pensive in production.
The hook consists of a single piece of iron wire having a straight intermediate section and parallel side sections merging with the ends thereof. The side sections have loop corner portions and straight body and end portions the end portions having pointed extremities adapted to be driven in the edge portion of the box lid.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hook.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational' view of the same.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the same.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing the hook is formed from a single piece or length of wire, or metal, preferably soft iron. The hook consists of an intermediate straight section 1 merging at its ends into side sections. The side sections are of the same shape and dimensions and a description of one will suffice. Each side section has a curved portion 3 which joins with the and durable, easy to. manufacture and inexextremity 6. The side sections of the hook are parallel with each other and lie in planes at right angles to the length of the intermediate portion 1, the portions 2 and 5 are disposed at right angles to each other.
All portions of the side sections lie in the same plane and the loops 4 form corner portions of the hook and are disposed witn portions projecting beyond the outer lines of the portions 2 and 5. In practice the pointed ends of the por- 'tions 5 are driven in the edge portions of the box cover and the lowering strap is passed through the hook and wrapped about the portion 1 in a usual manner. 'The box cover is lowered into the grave and the loop portions 4: will encounter the edges of the box and guide the cover into proper posi-.
tion upon the upper edges of'the box preparatory for securing the'same in a usual manner. After the lid is lowered and positioned' one end of thestrap is cast OE and the strap is pulled up from the hook in a usual manner, The curved portions 3- dispose the intermediate portion 1 directly above or within the lines of the edges of the at the ends thereof, the portions of the side sections being of the same form and dimenslons, each slde section having a curved portion whlch merges wlth an end of the intermediate section and a straight body por-' tion merging with said curved portion, a loop portion merging with the body portion and a straight end portion merging with the loop portion and having a pointed extremity.
2. A box lid hook formed from a single piece of wire having an intermediatev straight section'and parallel side sections at the ends thereof, the portions of the side sections being of the same form and dimensions, each. side section having a curved portion which merges with an end of the intermediate section and a straight body portion merging with said curved portion, a loop portion which is open at one side merging with the body portion and a straight end portion merging with the loop portion and having a pointed extremity.
3. A box lid hook formed from a single piece of Wire having an intermediate straight section and parallel side sections at the ends thereof, the portions of the side sections being of the same form and dimensions, each side section having a curved portion Which mergeswith an end of the intermediate section and a straight body 10 portion merging with said curved portion; a loop portion merging with the body portion and a. straight end portion chamfered at its end to provide a pointed extremity.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
WILLIAM L. SAXER.
