HARRY W. STEVENSON, 03 PORT CHESTER, NEW
HANDLE FOR BATTERIES.
Application filed December 23, 1921.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY \V. STEVENSON, a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Port Chester, county of 5 Westchester, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Batteries, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to means for facilitatin the lifting and carrying of storage batteries, or other heavy objects, particularly the removal of such objects from places not readily accessible.
As is well known, storage batteries are generally supported in cages or frames made in the chassis and oreat difiiculty is experienced in removing the batteries therefrom or in positioning the same in said cages.
My invention has for its principal object to provide a handlewhich can be easily and conveniently applied to a battery whenever the same is to be moved and which will facilitate the handling thereof.
It also has for its object to render the bandle adjustable to fit different sizes of batteries.
In the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, Fig. l is a longitudinal section of the handle shown applied to a battery; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the handle, and Fig. .3 a cross section thereof.
In the drawing B denotes a storage battery which as usually is provided at its ends with ears or grasps I). The handle c0mprises a rigid bar 10 which may be substantially of semi-cylindrical cross section as shown in Fig. 3 and which at its ends, as at 10' is flattened and bent downwardly to extend at an angle of about These ends are provided each with two parallel horizontal cross slots 11. The handle also comprises a hook or hooked shaped member 12, one for each end of the bar 10, adapted to These members are fiexi ly suspended from the bar 10 by straps 13 which are suitably engage the ears or gras s b of the battery.

through said slots and riveted to the body portion as at 14. The opposite ends 13 of the strap 13 are successively passed through the two parallel slots 11, first, say, through the upper slots inwardly, then outwardly through the lower slots over the lower edges of the ends 10. The bar 10 is designed to be considerably shorter in length than a battery of standard size, so that when the handie is applied to the latter and the battery is lifted, the straps 13 and hooks 12 will assume a position inclined at a suitable angle to the vertical, so as to engage the looped part 13 of the straps by iriction and also by pressure due to the-strain and thereby hold the strap firmly connected'to the bar 10.
If the handle is to be applied to a battery of a different size, the straps are adjusted in the slots 11 to be longer or shorter, as the case may be, so that the same angle may be retained, at which the body portion of the straps will press against the parts 13 of the looped portion thereof. In such case the heavier the Weight the stronger pressure will be applied to the parts 13.
By such construction auxiliary locking means are entirely avoided and the adjustment of the straps is greatly facilitated.
Since various modifications may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, I do not wish to restrict myself to the details described and shown.
What I claim and desire to secureby Letters Patent is A removable handle for storage batteries having grasps, said handle having angular end extensions each provided with parallel cross slots, hooked members serving for engagement of said battery grasps and flexible means carrying said hooked members and adapted to be looped through said parallel slots of the angular extensions, so as to fric tionally and adjustably engage the same.
Signed at New York, this 22d day of December, 1921.
HARRY W. STEVENSON.
