SAFETY SCOTCH HOQK Filed May 20, 1 955 Invenlor Jase/7%? Zayim Z5070.

Patented Jan. 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates broadly to a device for anchoring or holding rolling stock, such as mine cars and the like against accidental movement along the rails during a loading of the car, and what is commonly known in the art as a safety scotch. More particularly the invention is concerned with an improved hook for engaging one end of the cable part of the scotch with the mine car or other rolling stock.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the rail engaging member forming part of the invention.
Figure 3 is a view with the rail in section and showing the rail engaging member applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the improved scotch comprises a rail engaging member indicated generally by the reference numeral 5 connected by a flexible member 6, the same being preferably in the nature of a steel rope, with a hook 1 involving the features of the present invention adapted to engage over an edge of one wall of the mine car or the like 8 as clearly shown in Figure 1.
The rail engaging member or clip 5 in the preferred embodiment thereof comprises a flat bar 9 having a reversely bent end Ill disposed in a plane to flatly engage the inclined face of the base flange of the rail H at one side of the web of the flange as clearly shown in Figure 6. Riveted or otherwise secured to the bar 9 intermediate its ends as at 12 is a clamping lug l3 having a part disposed in anti-clinal relation to the clamping part In of the bar 9 and adapted to flatly engage the sloping or inc-lined face of the base flange of the rail II at the side of the web opposite to the clamp member 10 as also shown in Figure 3. At its free end the bar 9 is provided with an aperture for receiving a suitably formed. loop 6a provided at one end of the cable or rope 6.
The hook I of the present invention is preferably formed from a single length of wire rod or the like bent and shaped to provide the hook proper the bill of which is reversely bent upon itself as at M and terminates in an angularly disposed end providing a handle [5 for the hook to facilitate the handling of the hook and the engagement of the same over the edge of the wall of the mine car or the like 8. The shank part of the hook is flat and provided with an aperture to receive a suitably formed loop 6b on an end of the cable or rope 6 as shown in Figure 1.
In actual practice, the member 5 is applied to the rail by placing the bar at substantially right angles to the rail and engaging the lug l3 with the base flange at one side of the rail. The bar 9 is then rotated in a substantially clockwise direction vertically to move the bar into substantially flat transverse engagement with the base flange, when the bar 9 is then pulled toward the operator transversely of the rail to engage the hook or lug I0 with the base flange at the side of the web of the rail opposite to the lug l3 when the parts are then in the position shown in Figure 3.
From the above it will be apparent that with the member 5 thus engaged with the rail the hook I is engaged over an end wall of the mine car 8 and any pull exerted on the cable 6 due to the tendency of the car 8 to move will cause the member 5 to swing so that the bar 9 thereof extends obliquely of the rail resulting in a binding action of the members It] and I3 on the flange of the rail and thereby secure the car 8 against further movement. Thus the loading of the car 8 may be attended to with safety to the miner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a hook for use in connection with a mine car scotch and comprising a shank having an integral bill at one 35 end, and said bill having a reverse bend merging into an integral handle extending laterally from the hook intermediate the ends of said shank.
2. For use with a mine car scotch, having a flexible element connected thereto; a hook for detachably connecting one end of the flexible element with a mine car, said hook being formed from a single length of material shape-d and directed to provide a substantially longitudinally curved shank merging at one end in a curved bill having a reverse bend terminating at the side of the shank opposite to the bill in a laterally extending integral handle.
