Description
June 4, 1940.
H. SHERMAN RAIL CLAMP FOR MINE CARS Filed Sept. 5, 19259 Bymgmwm Attorneys Patented June 4, 1940 7 UNITED STATES PATENT orifice Ilhis invention relates broadly to a device for anchoring or'holding rolling stock such as mine cars and they like against accidental movement along the rails during a loading of the car, and
n what is commonly known in the art as a safety scotch.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the` following specification taken in connecl lo tion with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View' illustrating the appli-` cation of the invention.
`Figure 2 is a View taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1. 1.'. Figure 3 is a top plan View of the invention.
` Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seenthat the improved scotch comprises a rail engaging member indicated generally by the reference vnumeral 5 connected by o a flexible member 6, the same being preferably in the nature of a chain, to a mine car or the like i as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The rail engaging member or clamp 5 in the preferred embodiment thereof comprises a flat 2.3 bar 8 having a reversely bent end 9 disposed in a plane to flatly engage the inclined face of the base flange of the rail I0 at one side of the vveb` A of the flange as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Bolted or otherwise secured to the bar 8 intermediate 30 its ends as at II is a clamping lever I2 having one end portion bentat an angle thereto as at I3 with an aperture I4 therethrough. The other end portion of the clamping lever I2 is rounded as at I5 and has a groove Iiiormed therein for 35 engagement with one side edge of the rail flange Ill.
One end portion of the chain 6 is secured to the clamping lever I2 through the aperture I4 to secure the` device tol a mine In actual practice, the member 5 is` applied to the rail by placing the bar at substantially right angles to the rail and engaging the lug li With the base 'ange at one sideoi the rail. The clamping lever is 'then `rotated toi cause the 5 grooved end portion l5 to engage the base iiange at ythe other side of the rail and securely lock the same against displacement as shown in Fig. l.` 'When in. this. position `any pull exerted `on the chain iidue to the tendency of the car l to move 1U will cause the clamping jaw I2 andv lug 9 to bind against the flange and thereby secure the car I againstiurther movement. Thus the loading of the car l may be attended to with safety to the miner. l Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, itis v to be definitely understood that I do not desire v to' limit the application of the invention thereto,
and any change or changes may be made in the v 2U materials and, in the structure and arrangement of parts, Within the spirit'of the invention as claimed. i
What is claimed is: In a `device of the character described, a rail 25 clamping for mine cars comprising a substantially plate likemember having a llug at one end portion for engaging a rail flange at one side edge, a rotatable lever pivotally secured to the other end portion oi said plate lilze member, said rotatable lever having a grooved end portionfand an upturned apertured end portion, said groroved end portion 'being adapted to engage the other side edge of said rail fiange, and a chain secured r at one end portion to said apertured upturned 30 ad portion of said rotatable lever and at its other end portion to a mine car.
