The primary objectis to provide. an efli cient, easily operated sealing means which can be conveniently attached,.making a substantial means of keeping the door closed to prevent access to the car without breaking the seal.
The" novel construction of the invention will be specifically described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the sealing means applied.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference: I
1 designates a car of appropriate construction to which is hung the usual side door 2. hen the cleat is 'inthe position shown in Fig. 2, the car door can be swung back and forth in the usual way. When it is desired to fasten the door, the cleat will be swung up into the position shown in Fig. 1.so that its edge will be received in the space formed by the angle comprising the plate'8 and the flange 13, the link will vbe swung over to a position to cause its-bar 26 to lie in the groove 15, then the cam will be swung down against the link to hold it in engagement with the lug, that is, the lug and cam constitute two link-receiving jaws to hold the link in the position shown in The act of swinging the cam to- F ig. 1. the position to hold the link in place will automatically cause the two eyes or loops l6 and 17 to register. Then a sealed ribbon 30 may be passed through the loops or eyes 16 and 17 and the ends thereof fastened by a seal 31. Of course, it is to be understood that any seal may be substituted for the seal shown. It will also be apparent that when the parts are in the po sition shown in Fig. 1 and the two eyes 16 and 17 are connected by any appropriate seal, the door cannot be opened withoutbreaking the seal, the penalty for which is obviously severe.
When it is desired to open the door, an authorized person can break the seal, throw the cam out of link-engaging position, and by swinging the link away from the cleat, the cleat can drop to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the door may be opened.
It will, therefore, be apparent that the fastening means is simple in construction, thatit can be easily applied to any exist-. ing type of car, and that it will efliciently operate when in place.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a box car having a sliding side door for closing a side opening therein, of a bracket having an upwardly extending guide portion for the door, a flanged cleat pivoted to the bracket and overlapping the bottom and vertical edge of the door at one corner and a fastening device carried by the door engaging a part of the cleat.
2. In combination with a box car having a sliding side door for closing a side opening therein, of a bracket having an upwardly extending guide portion for the door, a flanged cleat pivoted to the bracket and overlapping the bottom and vertical edge of the door at one corner and a fastening device carried by the door engaging a part of the cleat, said fasteningdevice comprising a linkpivoted to the door and movable into and out of parallelism with the cleat.
3. In combination with a side door-box car, of a swinging cleat carried "by the car, the swinging cleat having a bottom door engaging fiange and asidedoor engaging flange, the swinging cleat having an upward swinging movement to engage the bottom of the door and thevertical outer edge and having downwardly swinging movement out of functional position and a fastening device carried by the door and engaging the cleat.
4:. In combination with a box car having a sliding door for closing a side opening therein, of a bracket below the lower edge of the'door, the outerverticaledge of the door being movable beyond the bracket and a right angular swinging cleat pivoted to the bracket and having flanges to engageqthe bottom edge and vertical outer edge of the door and means on the door for engaging the cleat.
