Be it known that JOHN A. GRAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, has invented new and useful Improvements in Burglarproof Window Guards, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily applicable window guard for use in connection with banks and similar institutions and also suitable for use for example in connection with dwelling houses and other buildings particularly on the lower floorswhich are more or less readily accessible from the ground or from fire escapes and the like as a means of preventing surreptitious or unauthorized entrance from the exterior while giving'an opportiuiity for free circulation of air and the admission of light and permitting the unimpeded operation of the sashes, screens and similar means of protection, the guard being such as to adapt it to be locked in position against the possibility of unauthorized removal while being readily detachable when required to leave the window opening entirely unobstructed; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a; preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The device consists essentially of a screen comprising rods transversely connected by brace bars 11, the former preferably be ing round and the latter flat as shown, with the bars terminally extended beyond the side edges of the screen into overlapping relation with the side members 12 of the window casing or other opening and twisted to form flat ears 13 for engagement with hook shapedl keepers 14 permanently secured to the Window casing at its inner surface. The ears 13 may also be provided with terminal lugs 15 to act as stops to prevent lateral displacement of the screen and depending from the screen at an intermediate portion of its width,'and preferably formed by a looped extension of two of the upright screen rods 10 is an eye 16 disposed when the screen is in its normal position to lie in the interval between the spaced ears 17 forming parts of a locking device and supporting a bolt or pin'18 to extend through said eye and thereby lock the screen against upward movement suffi cient to permit of the disengagement of the side ears 13 from the keepers 14.
The upper ends of the locking "ears 17 are preferably provided with notches o=r seats 19 for the reception of the shoulders 20 formed by the inwardly bent portions of the rods 10 adjacentto the eye 16 which in the construction illustrated consists of a coil at the looped end of two adjacent rods 10, said rods preferably being constructed in pairs to constitute hairpin filler elements. Also the locking bolt or pin is preferably provided with radial lugs 21 adapted to pass through notches 22 in the ears 17 so that by turning the pin or bolt after 'it has been seated it may be held in position tolock the screen in place without supplemental locklng means.
To provide against the surreptitious removalof the screen, however, it is preferable to provide 'a movable stop 23 having a swivel mounting upon a lock casing 2 1 attached to a base plate 25 which in turn is adapted to be permanently secured to the window sill and which also carries a looped plate 17 of which the upturned ends constitute the locking ears. 17, and said swivelled stop is controlled by lock mechanism in the casing 24L operable only by a key specially adapted thereto and insertable through a key hole 26 in the casing. Said stop is adapted to be arranged in parallelism with the direction of movement of the pin or bolt 18 to permit of sliding movement of the latter, said pin or bolt having a head 18 which is flattened at one side as shown in Figure 5 to lie close to the plane of the stop, whereas by turning the stop through an angle of ninety degrees it may be disposed directly in the path of movement of the pin or bolt to prevent the displacement of the latter and hence the disengagement of the screen,such movement of the stop being effected by the key actuable lock mecha nism housed within the casing 24 and which may be of any suitable or preferred construction forming no part of the present invention and therefore not specifically embodied in the illustration thereof.
As above indicated the screen is mounted at the inner surface of the window casing in a position to permit the unimpeded operation of the window sashes of whatever type may be employed and while adapted to be securely locked in position against surreptitious displacement or removal to permit access from the exterior may readily be disengaged and released and removed to expose the window opening when required, merely by the turning through the agency of the proper key of the stop 23 and the withdrawal of the locking pin or bolt from engagement with the eye 16.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is l. A device for the purpose indicated embodying? a member longitudinally movable to effect removal and comprising a pair of rods forming a loop of which the looped; end is extended to form an eye, and locking means for securing said member against longitudinal movement and consisting of spaced locking ears between which said eye is disposed when said member is in its normal position, and a locking pin passing slidably through said ears and said eye.

A device for the purpose indicated embodying a locking member consisting of spaced locking ears adapted for the reception between them of a member provided with an eye and constituting an element of a device to be looked, a locking pin engaging said ears and said eye, and a locking means for said pin having a movable stop for arrangement in the path of removal thereof. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a member adapted for removal following a longitudinal movement imparted there-to, said member embodying a pair of rods forming a loop of which the looped end is extended to form an eye, and locking means consisting of spaced locking ears between which said eye is adapted to be disposed when said member is in its normal position, a locking pin engaging said ears and said eye and longitudinally movable to eltect release of the latter, and locking means for said pin, said locking ears being provided with notches constituting seats for the reception of the shoulders formed at the loop of said rods adjacent to and at opposite sides of the plane of the eye.
