1,574,688 C. O. PLUMMER GATE FASTENER F'iled Feb. 21 1924 6 0. Planner ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Feb. 23, 1925.
UNITED STA CHARLES 0. PLU'MMER, OF GEARY, OKLAHOMA.
GATE FASTENER.
Application filed February 21, 1924. Serial No. 694,396.
To (:Zl 70/10171 it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. PLUMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geary, in the county of Blaine and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful improvements in Gate Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a gate fastener, and my object is to produce a device for this purpose which shall be of a simple construction, cheaply manufactured and easily applied, and which will effectively hold a gate locked to agate post.
A further object is the production of a gate fastener in the nature of a compound lever having a hook associated therewith to engage the end bar of a gate, the device being pivotally connected with a gate post and when swung to locking position will draw on the hook to hold the same rigid and thereby prevent the accidental unlocking of the gate.
To the attainment of the foregoing, refer once is to be had to the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this application.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view of a gate locked to a gate post in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line EB-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the. fastener.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates aswinging gate, and 2 the latch post therefor. On, the post 2 there is swingablv secured, as at 3, a substantially U-shaped yoke 4. This yoke has the ends of its arms bent to provide eyes that receive therethrough the comparatively straight inner end portions 5 of a lever 6. The lever is'preterably constructed from a single piece of wire so that the body thereof is U-shaped in plan. The end portions 5 are bent inwardly and extended to-provide acentral crank portion 7. This crank is also substantially U-shaped in plan but is arranged at an outward angle with respect to the body of the lever. The crank has swingably connected thereto the inner endof a rod 8, the outer end ofwhich ,being formed with a hook 9.
The hook 9, when the compound lever con struction above described has the elements constituting the same swung to substantially parallelism, is designedto be arranged on the vertical end bar of the gate 1. The ioint between the sections comprising the compound lever is broken by the swinging of the lever proper on the yoke which, ot course, drawsthe crank portion 7 of the said lever inwardly or toward the latch post, and'suchmovement also draws upon the hook to move the gate in the direction of the latch post. The latch cannot be accidentally unlocked, but the lever thereof may be easily swung toward the gate to permit of the hook being detached from the gate stile. The improvement may be used in connection with the ordinary latching bail between the gate and gate post, if desired.
Having described the invention, I claim In combination with a swinging gate and a latch post therefor, of: a means for drawing the gate toward the latch post and for locking said gate thereto, said means comorising a yoke pivoted to the latch post, a lever whose body portion is substantially U -shaped in plan having'inner inturned ends swingably connected to the ends of the yoke, the ends of the lever merging into a substantially U-shaped crank portion disposed centrally, of the lever proper and arranged at an angle with respect thereto, and a hook swingably connected with the crank portion of the lever, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES O. PLUMMER.
