,gaersnr e Fries;
A Application, filed April 22, 1921, Serial No, 468,497. Renewed July 12,1924.
To whom it may concern Be known that 1, Forum Fnnmu'cx Norman, a citizen of the United States, residing at New, York, in the county of New York ,and, State of New York, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will others skilled in the art to which it appertains .to make and use the same.
Th sginvention relates. to new Y improvements in abdominal sup rters and more. particularly to that type which are wornto replace the well known corset and the main object of this invention is the provisioniof a device of this character con suitable" ex ansion andcontraction of the device set at it 'may be comfortably worn by difi'erent sized figures. Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character constructed of two or more substantially C- shaped resilient members suitably connected andprovided with the usual whale-bone connectionsused in the construction of corsets at the present time and provide suitable covering-for the difi'erent members outlining the construction of the device so that the same can be worn with comfort.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character wherein the bands used in the construction of the same can be quickly and readily adjusted so as to accommodate the same to figures of various sizes and also-to eliminate the usual fastening members used on corsets at the resent time which consists of the lacin and the well kno n form of hooks.
still; further object of the invehtion is to pro 'de in combination witha' supporter of the bove character, an adjustable bust support attached to the body of the supporter so t at the same can be readily adjusted to the mmodation of the person wearing the su port.
Wit the above and other objects in view the inyention consists in the novel features of. construction, combination and arranger ment 'of parts hereinafter more full set forth pointed out in the claims and own in ghe accompanying drawings in which:
1 porter constructed in accordance with my inyention illustrating the application of the a d useful re 1 is a front perspective bf a sup "saine, parts thereof being broken away and attachment of the adjusting plate, and
Fig.6is a detailperspective view showing the ad ustable connection of the bust sup- 1 port with the main support.
In the construction of m invention, I em- I ploy an upper band 1, a ower band 2 and an intermediate diagonal band 3. The u per band 1, when applied to thebodyof the wearer is arranged at a point *ust above the hip lines, while the lower ban 2" is 'to'be arranged at a pointnear the widest portion of the hip, the intermediate band 3 is connected at its central ortion to the central portion of the upper and 1 as shown at 4 and is curved diagonally down around the hips between the upper and lower band and the ends of this intermediate band are so? cured as at 5- to theends of the lower band 2.
While I have shown and described the intermediate band 3 as connected to the upper band 1 by riveting or other similarcfastening means, I wish it to be understood that this band 3 may, if found suitable, be formed integral with the upper band 1 at their in termediate portions so as to provide a. smooth and unbroken surface at this point.
It will be-noted that one of the ends of the members 7 referably of the usual whale bone type w ich are used in the construction of corsets at the present time and the entire frame work is covered with, any suitable and desirable material.
From this, it will be apparent that I have rovided a suitable' su porter' which prouess -an improved e ect over the well known form of corset used at the present time,a.
it the same time is comfortable in its fitting and provides a neat-appearance in its finished state.
In'fordwto provide for the adjustment of the resilient bands 1, 2, and 3, each of the bands,/if found necessary, may be provided with suitable adjusting members which in the present instance are shown as plates .8 having a plurality of eyelet openings 9, but
for the purpose of illustrating this adjustthe ends of the same away from each other the pins 10 are moved from the outermost openings inward to the openings nearer the center of the late 8 so. that should the person wearing e support desire to loosen the efi'ect of the same, the plates 8 will be ad- 'usted upon the headed pins 10 so as to relieve the pressure of the resilient bands at the r uired point.
In igs. 1 and 6, I have illustrated suitable bust supporting members to be used in connection with my improved abdominal support and they are herein illustrated as formed-of a single supportin arm 11, the lower end of which is provi ed with suitable eyelet openings 12 adapted to receive the headed 'ms 13 formed upon the up 1' band 1 of tlie body of the support so t t the arms 11 can be readily adjusted vertically. These arms 11 are to be formed of a light resilient material such as sprin steel or whale-bone and are provided at their upper ends with suitable bust supports 13'- while their-lower ends project into suitable pocket members 14 carried by the body portion of the support so as to prevent the lower ends of the arms 11 from contacting with the body of the wearer. The pocket me bers 14 may be constructed of any uitable weight material and are to be supported upon the interior of the body of the support or, in other words, arranged between the inner lining of the support and the outer cover' said outer covering being generally indicated by the numeral15 in Fig. 2, so that these pockets are entirely out of sight and access thereto is gained through'suitable openings provided for at the upper edge of the supporter.
Particular attention is called to the adjustable plate 8 which is attached to a substantially 'C-shaped spring and provided to contract and expand said spring and to move the ends of the spring toward or awayfrom each other andwhile I have illustrated this particular type of spring as used in connection with a support ofzthe type described various oth t From the above description taken in conheretofore, I wish it to be understood that this particular type of spring can be used for,
er purposes.
nection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily'apparent that I have provided an abdominal supporter which is simple in its construction, can be manufactured atcomparatively low cost and wherein the same can belquickly and readily adjusted to accommodate figures of various sizes, can be worn with comfort and provide a neat outer appearance. It will also be apparent that I have rovided in connection with a supp -"t of t character, a bust sup rt whic-- Jan either be worn with the abdominal support or entirely eliminated.
I. claim:
1. An; abdominal support cnlprising a band of resilient but non-extensible material consistin of a plurality of parts adjustably connects I in such manner as to allow the band .to be flexed.
2. An abdominal support comprising a band of resilient but non-extensible material consistin of a plurality of parts adjustably connecte in such ,manner as to allow the band to be flexed and having its free ends overlapping.
3. An a dominal sup ort comprising a plurality of resilient-ban including 8 seed bands and a diagonal intermediate ban connected at its intermediate ortion to one of the s aced bands and having its ends connected to the ends of the other band.
4. In an abdominal support a C-sha d member and an adjusting plate detacha 1y connected to the curved portions of said member whereby to contract and expand the member to move the ends of the sum toward or awa from each other.
5. An ab ominal sup ort comprising a plurality of resilient bangsincluding an upper andlower band anda diagonal mter-meiate band connected to each of the upper and lower bands, one of the ends of said upper band being bifurcated and the other on of said band being movable within said band and breast supports arra at the upper ends of said vertically adjusting sup porting members.
8. A corset comprising a pluralit of spaced circularly bent resilient ban s, a diagonal intermediate band connected to the upper and lower circular bands, pocket members carried by said bands, vertically adjustable supporting members mounted upon one of said bands havin their lower ends extending into said poc et members and breast supporting members at the upper ends of said adjustable members.
9. Anabdominal support includi spaced bands of resilient but non-extensib e material, a diagonal intermediate band connected at its intermediate portion to one of said spaced bands and having its ends connected to the "other of the s aeed bands and means detachably connec with one of said bands whereby to expand or contract the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my' signature.
