Application July 30, 1956, Serial No. 600,766 6 Claims. (Cl. 12s-s40 This invention relates to corset construction and, more particularly, to improvements in the construction of corsets of the general type disclosed in US. Patent No. 2,629,097, of which applicant is the assignee.

Certain objections to the corsets now available for women :are that the corset is uncomfortable, ineffective to properly shape the body, and that proper support is not obtained. An object of this invention, therefore, is to provide corset construction that is simple, eflicient to support the abdomen of the wearer, and which overcome the aforementioned difliculties.

Another object of this invention, is to provide a corset for women that is constructed of selective elastic and nonelastic panels, that are so arranged to properly shape the mid-section of the wearer, andwhich may be quickly applied and removed.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is an inside plan view of one form of corset made in accordance with this invention;

Figure 2 is an inside plan view of a modified form of corset;

Figure 3 is a bottom edge view of the corset shown in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is an inside plan View of a still further form of this invention;

Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 55 of Figure 2;

Figures 6, 7, and 8 are inside plan views of a still further modified form of this invention;

Figure 9 is a still further modified form of corset made in accordance with this invention; and

Figure 10 is a rear plan view of the corset construction shown in Figure 9.

Referring now to Figure l of the drawing, a corset made in accordance with one form of this invention is shown to include a rear stay casing having a plurality of vertical flexible reinforcing stays 16 disposed therein and having a pair of outwardly and downwardly extending upper elastic

marginal strips

19, 20, is a main elastic panel 25 which is adapted to engage the covered portion of an anatomy when the corset is placed around the mid-section of a wearer. The rear casing 15 is arranged to follow .the adjacent portion of the spine, whereas the Zipper is adapted to be placed adjacent to the abdomen, of the wearer, the elastic panel 25 being adapted to stretch in the direction of .the arrows.

Referring now to Figures 2, 3, and 5, a modified form of the invention is shown wherein the body of the corset includes an elastic panel 27 that is adapted to stretch in the direction of the arrows and which is provided with a pair of cutout sections 29, 30, along the bottom edge thereof that are adapted to permit the free movement of the wearers legs when the garment is being worn. 19, 20, together with the main panel 27 by means of stitching 33, 34. This band 32 is adapted to engage beneath the abdomen of wearer and to support the associated portion of the anatomy, the band being secured by stitching 35 to the rear stay casing 15, as more clearly shown in Figure 3.

Referring now to Figure 4, a still further modified form of the present invention is shown to include an elastic panel 38 that forms the main body of the corset and which is provided with

39, 40 that are adapted to permit the free movement of the legs of the wearer that are disposed adjacent thereto. In this form of the invention, the abdomen supporting elastic band is omitted so as to provide greater freedom of movement, particularly adjacent to the leg cutout portions.

A further modified form of the present invention is shown in Figure 6, wherein the main body of the corset includes an elastic center panel 43 that is yieldable in the direction of the arrows, and which is connected to non-elastic side panels 45 at each end thereof. In Figure 7, another modified form of the invention is shown wherein the main body portion includes an inelastic center pauel 52 mounted on either side by an elastic side panel 53, 54, that is yieldable in the direction of the arrows. 19, 20. It is to be noted, that this modification does not require the provision of leg cutout portions in order to provide a substantial degree of movement.

A still further modification of the present invention, as shown in Figure 8, includes a main body portion that has an inelastic center panel 58 bounded on either side by elastic panels 59, 60, the composite main body being provided with a pair of receiving cutouts 61, '62, along the bottom edge thereof. Referring now to Figures 9 and 10, a still further modified form of the invention has a rear elastic stay casing 66 that is yieldable in a vertical direction as shown by the arrows, and which does not require the use of rigid stays 1-6 as provided in the aforementioned constructions. A rear two-

The main front panel 75 is of one-way stretch construction and is secured at each edge to one of the front two-way stretch panels 73, 74. The front panel 75 includes a vertically slidable zipper 76 that extends approximately half-way down the front thereof. The upper edges of the connected adjacent sections are finished and enclosed by an upper elastic edging 78. The bottom edges thereof are enclosed by a lower elastic edging 79.

In applying the corsets shown and described in Figures 1 through 8, the rear stay casing is placed in line with the spinal column of the wearer and the side sections wrapped around the hips thereof so as to permit the engagement of the respective zipper portions. Each of the (2 respective sections of the main body portions are adapted to engage the adjacent parts of the anatomy-to positively and properly support the same. In applying the corset, shown in Figures 9 and 10, the zipper 76 is open until the garment is properly positioned the body, afte'r which the zipper closed. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent:

1. Corset construction comprising, -in combination, a main body section arranged to be eitended about the waist and abdomen of a human body, a vertical rear casing, 'a pair of outwardly and downwardly extending npper marginal strips secured one to each upper side of said rear casing, -"a downwardly and outwardly extending end section secured to the free end of each or said marginal 25 strips, a main support panel secured to said 'r'n'a'r'ginal strips and-said endsections, said mainsupport pan'elbeing at least in part stretchable -in a horizontal direction, said marginal strips being longitudinally stretchable, said rear casing and said end section being inelastic in a ver'ti- 30 cal direction. 2. A corset construction as set forthin claim 1-, wherein said main support panel comprises a single elastic panel stretchable in a horizontal direction, said rear easing comprising a plurality of substantially stay means.

3. A corset construction as set forth in claim 2, wherein said main support panel further comprises a Wide elastic band adjacent to said elastic panel and secured to each of said end sections, the lower edge of said elastic panel 5 comprising a pair of leg receiving cutout portions.

4. A corset construction as set forth in claim 2, wherein said main support panel comprises a pair of leg receiving cutout portions along lower edge thereof.

5. A corset construction as set forth in claim 1, wherein 10 said main support panel comprises -a central two-way stretch elastic panel, and a pair of inelastic panels each secured at opposite ends to one end of said elastic panel and-an adjac ent end section, said main support panel comprising a pair of 'leg receiving cutout portions ad- 15 jacent the lower edge thereof, and a wide elastic band 20 and inelastic panels, said 'main support panel having a pair of leg receiving cutout portions adjacent the lower edge thereof, and-a wide flexible band secured to said end sections.
