H. c. POMEROY COVER FOR DRINKING VESSELS Filed Oct. 8. 1921 H I zfenior' i7 fliiomyeysf Patented Aug. 12, 192 ic UNITED STATES HOWARD G. POMEROY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COVER FOR DRINKING VESSELS.
Application filed. October 8, 1921. Serial No. 506,254.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD C. PoMnRoY, a citizen or" the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Covers for Drinking Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to covers for drinking vessels and the like and particularly to removable covers that are adapted for use on trains and ships to prevent the contents of the vessel from being spilled. The invention has for its principal objects to prevent splashing and spilling of the contents of drinking vessels and the like and also to afford a protection against contamination by germs or dirt on the vessel. The invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings which form part of this specification and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts wherever they occur Fig. 1 is a plan view of a cover embodying my invention;
2 is a cross-sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of the invention;
Fig. i is a sectional view thereof, showing the cover partly in place;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 4, showing the cover in place; and
Fig. (3 is a plan view of a modified form of cover.
A sheet or disk 1 of waterproof material, such as oiled or waxed paper is stretched over the end of a ring 2, and has its peripheral portion bent against the side of said ring. A ring 3 of slightly larger diameter is slipped over the first ring 2 and thus the disk 1 is clamped between said rings. The larger ring 3 tits snugly in the top of a cup i or other vessel; Thus the disk forms a cover that prevents the contents of the vesselfrom splashing or spilling out and prevents any foreign matter from getting into the vessel.
When the contents of the vessel are to be drunk or poured out, the disk is slitted near the edge as is indicated at5 in the drawings.
Preferably, the disk is provided with a tongue 6 adjacent to the slit. This tongue is bent over the side of the vessel 4: and constitutes a protection to the lips and mouth of the person drinking from the vessel. The tongue may be omitted as shown in Fig. 6.
In Figs. 3 to 5 is illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention in which the marginal portion of the disk is cut away at intervals to provide flaps 11 that are bent over the retaining ring 2. It is practicable to use only one ring, in which case the peripheral portion of the paper is bent over said ring and is clamped between the sides of the ring 2 and the vessel 4.
The cover hereinbefore described prevents splashing and spilling of the contents of vessels on trains and ships and prevents dirt, cinders and other matter from getting into the vessels. It also affords a protection against dirty or germ bearing vessels. A cover is used only once and is then thrown away, and thus each individual is assured of having a fresh cover. Obviously numerous changes may be made without departing from my invention and I do not desire to be limited to the precise construction shown.
What I claim is 1-- 1. A cover for drinking vessels and the like comprising awaterprooied disk adapted to fit the mouth ofthe vessel and said disk having a slit therein and having a tongue adjacent to said disk adapted to be bent over the side of the vessel and means for holding said disk in position in the mouth of said vessel.
2. A removable cover for drinking vessels and the like comprising rings, one of slightly less diameter than the other, and a disk having its peripheral portion held between saidrings, said cover being placed in the top of said vessel.
3. A removable cover for drinking vessels and the like comprising rings, one of slightly less diameter than the other, and a cover of waterproof material having its peripheral portion held between said rings. said cover being placed in the mouth of said vessel and having a slit therein.
4. A removable cover for drinking ves sels and the like comprising rings, one of slightly less diameter than the other. disk of waterproof material having its peripheral portion held between said rings, said disk having a slit near the side and being provided with a projecting tongue adjacent to said slit.
Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this 4th day of October, 1921.
HOWARD G. POMERQY.
