To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN SADLER, a citizenfof the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tongue Hounds, of which the following is a specification.

In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide an adjustable tongue hound which may be. readily'and quickly applied to vehicles and adjusted to fit between the wagon hounds, and wherein the tongue hounds may be adjusted an: gularly with respect to eachothersojjas to fit properly between. the wagon hounds.

It is also mypurpose to provide adjust' able tonguehounds whereby the tongue may be securelyconnectedjto the wagon hounds in such manner as to prevent slipping of the tongue and-wherein the tongue maybe readily swung up'and down whenever necessary or desired. 1 r I Furthermore, I aim to provide a construction of adjustable tongue hounds wherein the hounds may be readily and quickly ad-.

these so arranged and corelated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum. 1 r

Vith the above-recited objects in View, and others ofa similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the seope of the appended claims.

Referring now "to the drawings in detail, 11 designate the wagon hounds which may be constructed in any suitable manner and which converge toward each'other from the rear ends toward the front.

My improved adjustable tongue hound construction is placed within the wagon hounds 11 and comprises side bars 22 arranged alongside of the inner'surfaces of the wagon hounds 11, respectively. In

the outer edge of the body 3 and designed to lie adjacent to the inner side of the wagon hound 1. Formed in each side bar 2 is a series oftransverse openings a adapted to interchangeably aline with an opening 5 formed in -the adjacent wagon hound 1. Through these alinings openings is passed a pivot rod 6 havingits outer ends threaded and equipped with nuts 7. The pivot rod 6 has a direct connection between the tongue hounds and the wagon hounds and at the same time permits of a vertical swinging movement of the wagon hounds, in order that the tongue may be raised and lowered.

Arranged between the bars.2-2 of the tongue hound .construction'is the inner end of the wagon tongue 8. Adjacent to its inner extremity thetongue 8 is formed with a series of transverse openings 8 to receive the bar 6, so that a pivotal bonnection may be established between the tongue and the hounds 1 and a connection established between the tongue and the tongue hounds construction.

Bolted or otherwise secured to the opposite sides of the tongue '8 in advance of the wagon hounds are metal straps 9 having their rear ends formed to provide vertical pivot pin openings 10. Arranged transversely of the tongue 8 above and below the same are pairs of straps 1111. The inner ends of the straps of each pair 11 overlap each other, and the overlapping ends of the straps of each pair are formed with interchangeably alining openings 12. When any two of the openings 12 are brought into alinement with each other, said alining openings also aline with an opening formed on the tongue, and through these alining openings is passed a bolt 13. Thus, a connection is established between the pairs of straps 1111 and the tongue, as clearly shown in Figure 4; of the drawing. The outer ends of the straps 1111 overlie and underlie, respectively, the bars n Figure 2 of the drawings. The forward 1 ends ofthe links 1 are arranged above and below the pivot openings in the straps 9 and are connected to such pivot openings 10 by pivot bolts 16.

Arranged transversely of thetongue 10 at the inner extremity thereof above and below such tongue are pairs of straps 17-12", respectively, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The straps of each pair 17 have their inner ends overlapping each other and formed with interchangeably alining openings 18. WVhen any two of the openings 18 are in alinement, they also aline with an opening in the tongue, and through these alining openings is passed a pin 19, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. Thus, a connection. is established between the pairs of straps 17 and the tongue. The outer ends of the straps 17 overlie and underlie, respectively, the bars 2 adjacent .tothe inner ends of such bars and are adapted to connect to the bars 2 by means of pivot bolts 20 that pass through the'straps 17 and are interchangeably associated with a *series of openings 21 formed in each bar 2.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying uraw 'ings, it will be seen that by means of the pairs of straps 11 and 17 the bars 2 of the r tongue hounds construction may be ad- -.-justed toward and away from each other and may also be adjusted to correspond to the angle of the wagon hounds 11, while by means of the links 15 and the pivot rod 6 a connection is established between the tongue, the tongue hounds and the wagon hounds which hold the tongue against slipping. I'have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative an rangement of parts embraced in the presei and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however. to be understood as confining myself to the specifi construction and relative arrangement of parts, inasmuch as in the future practice of the ininner sides of saidwagon hounds, respectively, a wagon tongue having its inner end arranged between'said bars, apivot rod extending through said wagon hounds, side bars'and tongue, said side bars being each formed with a series of openings through which saidpivot rod may be interchangeably passed, whereby the longitudinal positions of said bars with respect to the wagon hound may be varied, adjustable connections between the forward ends of said side bars and tongue and adjustable connections between the rear ends of said bars and tongue, whereby the angular positions of said bars with respect to each other may be changed to correspond to the angular positions of the wagon hounds.

In adjustable tongue hounds construction, the combination with the wagon hounds, of side bars arranged against the inner sides ofsaid wagon hounds, respectively, a wagon tongue having its inner end arranged between said bar s,-a pivot rod extending through said wagon hounds, side bars and tongue, said side bars being each formed with a series of openings through 'whichsaid pivotrod may be interchangeably passed, whereby the longitudinal positions ofsaid bars wit-hrespect to the wagon hound may be varied, adjustable connections between the forward ends of said side bars and tongue and adjustable connections between the rearends of said-bars and tongue,
