To aZZ whom-2, may concern:
Be it known that I, REMOUS Fon'ns rnn,
useful Improvements in Wagon Tongues,
and Connections, a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon. tongues and their connections.
An importantobject of the invention is to improve the construction of a wagon tongue in general, for increasing its strength, providing for a large range of adjustment, and to provide adjustable means for'conmeeting it with the hounds of the wagon.
' A' further object of th inventionis to provide a tongue of the above'mentioned character, which may be advantageously used in connection with a doubletree, or may be used for'coupling one wagon behind another. e p d Other objects and advantages'of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description,
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a wagon tongue and associated elements, embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
Fig; 31 is aside elevation of the tongue, partsbroken away and parts in section,
Fig. 4 is a'perspective view of the forward hound clamp, and, v
Fig. 5 is a. similar view of the rear hound clamp.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a wagon body, supported by a front axle 11, carrying front wheels 12. The numeral 13 designates the front bolster and 14: are the wagon hounds, rigidly mounted between the bolster-and the axle. The usual king bolt serves to pivotally connect the wagon body and bolster 13, as is well known.
The numeral 15 designates a rear tongue section, which extends through and rearwardly beyond a clamp 16. This clamp includes upper and lower sections 17 and 18, having flanges 19, apertured for the recepof which the following is and 29 have flanges 30, which hounds 25 bybolts 35;
T {We tion of bolts 20 and-21. These bolts serve to bind the clamp sections to the rear tongue section 'The clamp sections l'T'and 118 are apertured for receiving a pm 22, which is adapted to be passed through the double y The pin 221s alsoadapted to be passed through theapertured end, secured to the clampsection 17, at 2'4. The pin 22,01" coursefpasses tree (not. shown).
- J: Q or a cleat 2o throughan opening in the tongue section 15.
1 The numeral'25 designates a pair of tongue hounds, preferably formed ofinetal, and provided at their forward endswith apertured knuckles 26 which are inserted between the flanges 19, and adapted to receive the bolts 20. It is'th'us seen that a pivotahcon'nection is afforded between the tongue hounds and the clamp 17, which permits of lateral adjustment of the tongue hounds with respect to, the Wagon hounds 14, within limits. i
' The nun'ieral 27 designates a rear. tongue clamp, formed in upper and: lowerclamp sections 28 and 29, recelving the rearend of the tongue section 15. The sections 28 with elongated slots '31. These slots reare provided ,ceivebolts 32, which pass through apertured knuckles33, formed upon transverse brackets 34c,"securecl to the ends adjusting the brackets 34 transversely, the tongue hounds 25 may be shifted laterally, to assume positionsadjacent to the wagon'hounds 141-.
The slight lateral movement "of the brackets 34 is taken care of h the space between the bolts 30 and the walls of the slots 31.
of the tongue The numeral 27 designates a bolt passing through the clamp sections 28 and 29 and the tongue section 15, as shown.
The numeral 36 designates. a malnpivot pin or element, extending horizontally and transversely through apertures 37 in the Wagon hounds 14L, apertures 38 in the tongue lth) hounds 25 and an aperture 39 in the rear tongue section 15.
This pin ee pivotally' connects the ton ue section 15 with the wagon hounds, to permit the tongue being swung in a vertical plane.
The numeral 40 designates a forward tongue section, which is shown as arranged beneath the tongue section 15, while it may i be advantageously arranged above 1t. The
tongue section 1 0 is adjustable longitudinally with relation to the tongue section 15,
and thesetwo tongue sections have a series 49 secured to the front end of the wagon ranged body, as shown.
From the toregoingdescription it is obvious that-"1 have provided an adjustable tongue which may be applied to wagon l-iounds which are spaced different distances apart. It will also be seen that the tongue may be used in connection with the usual double tree or may be employed as the tongue of a trailer.
It is to be understood that form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the size, shape, form and arrangement of parts may be'resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim l. The combination with the hounds of a wagon, of a tongue section extending between the wagon hounds, a forward clamp mounted upon the tongue section, said clamp cl !bOClylng111)}i 6I and lower sections having laterally extending flanges which are provided with openings, tongue hounds arinwardly of the wagon hounds and converg ng forwardly and provided at their ends with apertured knuckles arranged be tween said flanges, elements passing through ac tame the flanges and the apertured knuckles to pivotally connect them, a main pivot pin passing through the hounds and tongue hounds, inwardly extending brackets rigidly secured to the rear ends of the tongue hounds and provided at their inner ends with apertured knuckles, a rear clamp secured upon the tongue section and embodying upper and lower sections having laterally extending flanges, said flanges having slots extending longitudinally of the flanges, and
bolts passing through the slots and the aperhounds rearwardly of the forward clamp, 'a
rear clamp secured to the tongue section and embodying upper and lower sections having slots extending longitudinally thereof, brackets rigidly secured to the rear ends of the tongue hounds and rojecting inwardly therefrom and having their inner ends apertu'r'ed and arranged between the flanges of the rear clamp, bolts passing through the slots otthe rear clamp and through the apertures in said brackets, said boltsbeing movable longitudinally within said slots and also capable or partaking )tslig' lit lateral movement therein. V
In testii'nony whereof I affix my signature.
