CHRISTOPHER D. rINDLAYAIID DAVID D. CRAIG, OE MACON, GEORGIA.
IMPRovEMENT IN'HA-v AND coTToN PREssEs.
Sp eclilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,313, dated April 28, 187A; application filed March 16, 1,874. g
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTOPHER D. FINDLAY and DAVID D. CRAIG, of Macon, in the county of Bibb. and State of Georgia, have Invented a new and Improved Press for Hay, Cotton, Src.; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part 'Ot' thls specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away; Fig'. 2, a vertical section Fig. 3, a plan View 5- Fig. 4, a detail side view of ring.
The invention relates to hay, cotton, or
other presses, but is intended more particularly as animprovement upon the press" for which Letters Patent were granted to us February 21, 1871. -The invention will iirst be fully-described, 1 11 connection with all thatL is necessaryto a iull understanding thereof, and then pointed out in the claim. l
A represents the follower screw, yhaving,
rounded spiral groove or thread, and attached to a plate, B,to the opposite side Ot' which the follower. is rigidly connected. C is a rotary nut, placed within a plain fixed tube,'B, and having small recesses, c, in which arelballs a, (made of any suitable material,) and arranged in a spiral order to correspond withV thread of screw A. This is employed instead of the spirally slotted and grooved circumjaeent tube y of our former patent, thenut C being thus thickened and strengthened, while the frictional contact-is lessened, and the resist-ance greatly diminished.. The tube or nut C has a ange, C', `at its lowerend, and in the upper face of this ilange a concavity whose bottom is inclined upwardly from the circumference to the nut C. Above this flange, and between it and the flange b' of tube B', is located avnut Cwill thus avoid the unequal pressure upon the perinreters of our former rollers, induce a more perfect uniformity thereof, and
ythus decrease the frictional resistance to the rotation ot' the nut. H is a Wrench or lever head, having a median recess to fit over the angular neck of nut C, and thus enable it to be rotated. it cannot rise by pins F F, that pass through holes h, and into grooves c2 of said neck. .Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- Thev nut C, having a series of recesses, c,
formed in its inner surface, and provided at its lower end with a flange, C', having its upper surface inclined upwardly from near the circumference to the nut, in combination with a serie-s of balls, a, screw A, conical rollers E, and hanged tube B', all constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified.
