Description

P. B. HUNT. Wheat-Heater.
Patented April 8, 1879.

PATENT OEEIGE.
PARDON B. HUNT, 0F AVOCA, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WH EAT-HEATERS.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent N0. 214,147, dated April 8, 1879; application led February l0, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARDoN B. HUNT, of Avoca, in the county of Pottawattamie, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheat-Heaters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wheatheater, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. y
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
A represents a cylinder of any suitable dimensions, placed in an upright position, and in operation arranged to receive the grain at the top and discharge it at the bottom. In
this cylinder is placed an irregular coil of pipe,
B, having its ends passing through the cylinder, the steam being admitted into said coil at the upper end and escaping at the lower end.
The coil B is constructed as shown in the drawings, having a large circle at top and bottom, and the circles gradually diminishing toward the center. This can easily be done by forming one-half of the coil at a time on a tapering mandrel, or in any other suitable or convenient manner. A
It will readily be seen that as the grain flows through the cylinder it strikes on the varying circles or spirals of the coil, whereby the flow is retarded and the grain turned over and over, so as to be fully exposed to and acted upon by the heat from the steam passing through the coil.
For the purpose of still further retarding the flow of grain and causing it to turn over, I may provide the inside of the cylinder with flanges C, projecting in an inclined position from the inner side thereof, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wheat-heater composed of a cylinder, A, with an interior steam-coil, B, made in double spiral form-that is, the center coil being the smallest, and then gradually increasing in size toward both ends-substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination ofthe cylinderA, double spiral coil B, and flanges C, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of January, 1879.
