To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND J. TILL- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented ,.ce1tain new and useful Improvements in Calters Patent thereon pertaining to a combined computing and measuring machine.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved arrangement and com-1 bination of a plurality of calculating scales.
Another object of this invention is in pro viding an improved movable calculating,
sheet bearing a plurality of price indicating characters and an improved arrangement of indicating lines which is cooperable with the characters of the sheet thelength and width thereof.
A further object of this invention is in combining a grade scale and a quantity scale with the movable indicating scale or sheet,

in which the indicating sheet is made simul taneously cooperable with both the grade and quantity scales.

With reference to Fig. 1, it is to be noted that there are two columns of figures 22 and. 23 on sight in the opening 9, each item or figure of the column 22 being in line With the one quarter yard measurements of the scale 8, whereas each figure in the column 23 is in line with each one-eighth yard measurement of said scale 8. the one yard on the scale 8 indicates $1.00,
whereas one and one-eighth yard will indi cate $1.13, whereas the yard and a quarter indication of said scale denotes $1.25.

In addition to the aforesaid relativeto the sheet 15, as shown in Figures 1 and-5, said sheet is provided with a diagonal line that extends lengthwise thereof from the approximately lowest to the highest figure of said sheet, said line being preferably differently colored from the type orfigures of said sheet, and is adapted to represent an indicating line 24, In carrying on the operation of this improved device the ends 25 and 26 of the sheet 15 are respectively secured in any desired mannento the respective rollers 13 and 14 said sheet being long enough, commensurate with the number of characters or prices to be placed thereon, and in which the sheet is adapted to be wound from one of said rollers to the other.
In the event that a customer desired to buy so many ards of a'certain grade of goods, the gra e of goods to be sold is first determined, and for the pur se of illustration it is assumed that the 1.00 grade of goods is elected, meaning goods at $1.00 per yard, and the customer desires to purchase six yards of the one dollar grade, the handle 20 is turned until the indicating line 24 of the sheet 15 is directed to the grade indication of $1.00 and in which the moving of the sheet 15 to a position of alinement with the $1.00 rade, also carried up the two or double co umns 22 and 23, as relating to the $1.00 heading of said sheet, so that both of said columns are in a position for inspection through the 'sight opening 9 (see Fig. 1,) in which the $6.00 calculation, as denoting six yards at $1.00 per yard, is found to be 0pposite the six yard mark] or raduation of the quantity scale 8.' After t e finding of the price of the six yards of goods, if the customer desires .or decides to change the original amount of six yards, to a greater or lesser amount of yards of the one dollar grade, any desired amount of yards and price thereof, up to ten yards of goods, can be readily ascertained by comparing the yardage. indication of the scale 8 with the calculations of the $1.00 double column'of the sheet 15.
If the next order of goods desired to be calculated is of a grade costing 15 per yard, the handle 20 is again manipulated, thereby causing the sheet 15 to be moved until the indicating line 24 thereof is brought to a position of indication with the price 15 of the grade scale 21, in which the double column. headed by the numeral 15, as denoting 15 per yard will be brou ht to an inspectin position within the si it opening '9, in finch the fractions of yar s at said rate of 15 per yard can readily be ascertained by comparing the graduations of the quantity scale 8 with the fractional prices under the 15 per yard double column.
Referring again to the aforementioned illustration 'regarding the price of six yards of goods at $1.00 per yard, it was desired that six'yards of goods be measured and out, the front edge of the material is introduced between the upper friction roller 27 and lower squeezing roller 28, and the material is pulled therethrough, and the carriage 29, hearing the indicating line 30, (which is mounted on the spiral shaft 31 and normally in position against the end member 5,) will be moved by the actuation of said shaft 31 to the desired position of indication relative to the six yard graduation of theq'uantity scale 8. where pulling force on the goods is discontinued and the measured goods is cut by the actuation of the knife 32. Since the quantity scale 8 and sheet 15 are adapted to calculate in one-eighth portions, it is essential that a locking device be provided where accuracy in one-eighth portions be provided :elative to the feeding and measuring of the goods being pulled through the friction roller 27 and the squeezing roller 28. In this connection a locking lever 33, which is fulcrumed at 34 to the end member 4, is provided said lever at one end bearing an en gaging portion 35, which is adapted to. engage into a single recess 36, provided in the friction roller 27 (see Fig. 3), said recess 36 being disposed diametrically from the marking arrow 87 formed in the periphery of said roller 27 and being part of the peripheral scale 38 of said roller, said scale having a circumferential length half inches as denoting one-eighth of a yard. This locking lever is for the purpose of preventing the goods being cut,' unless the proper amount of material has been fed through the rollers 27 and 28, in which the material cannot be out until the total len th thereof measures in portionsof one-eight is, as said lQY 31 when lowered will bear against the back or upper edge of the knife 32, thereby swinging said l ni l'e downwardly and severing the goods at the cutting edge 39 of the table 40. What I claim is:
A calculating machine, ing having a longitudinal side thereof, a column of multiplicand numbers on the casing adjacent to one side of the slot, a column of multiplier numbers on the casing adjacent to the opposite side of the slot, a sheet operatively supported in the casing, a series of columns of products on the sheet, means for operating the sheet transversely of and adjacent to the slot to different positions to selectively display the columns of products through said slot, and a diagonal line on said sheet arranged to indicate the respective multiplicand numhere in calculation in which the products visible through said slot are the products ofthe multiplicand number so indicated by said line multiplied by the various multiplier numbers in said column of multiplier numbers.
