L. J. SEYLER STAKE WINDLASS Fild Aug. 29, 1923 v ll 12 @y Patented duly 29, 1924.
STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESTER JOHN snYLnR,V or PORT ARTHUR., ONTARIO, CANADA.
STARE WINDLAss.
' Application filed August 29, 1923. Serial No. 660,015.
Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake Windlasses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stake windlasses, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character for pulling automobiles out of a ditch or other place where traction is not sufficient to move the car.
Further objects are the provision of a device of this kind that can be carried on a car and which will quickly be available for use when required.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the device. an embodiment of which is described in the present specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings which form part of the same.
Referring to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure:
`Figure 1 is a perspective view of anembodiment of my invention set up.
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the device embedded in the ground.
In the drawings, A indicates the device as a whole comprising a hollow metal stake 10 formed with a. solid end portion 11 and a pointed extremity 12. This hollow metal iember is preferably of cylindrical formation, similar to a pipe, with a pointed end and flat at the upper end at 13 to engage with a suitable ring washer 14.
Tnto this pipe is fitted a drum post member 15 adapted to form a drum and to rotate within the hollow receiving member 10. The post or drum member 15 is provided adjacent the top with a hole 16 therethrough adapted to receive a turning rod 17.'
18`is a retaining stake adapted to be driven into the ground adjacent the hollow member 1,0 and connected in any suitable manner, preferably as here shown, by means of a chain 19 with a loose eye ring 20 on the drum post 15 adjacent the top and prevented from moving downwardly by means of a suitable pin 21. The chain and retaining stake are adapted to reinforce `the drum member which is designed to rotate within thereta-ining ring.
22 is a cable preferably of steel, the loose end of which is secured in a hole 23 in the drum posty 15 and the other end of which is attached to a car or otherwise (not shown). The rod 17 is then operated to rotate the drum post 15 to wind up the cable and thus exert a pull on the car or other object to which the cable is attached.
As' many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended thatall matter contained in the accompanying specication and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
That I claim as my invention is:
A device of the character described comprising a hollow anchoring stake pointed at one end and Open at the other and adapted to be sunk in the ground, a flat top for the open end adapted to engage with a washer, a solid post adapted to fit into and rotate in saidV stake to form a detachable winding drum, means in the solid post for securing a cable thereto, a ring member loosely mounted onthe solid post, a stop member carried by the post to limit the downward travel of said ring, and a retaining chain connecting the ring with a retaining post, an orifice in the solid post adjacent the top between the top and said ring, and a handle adapted to fit into said orifice whereby the solid post is rotated to wind thereon accable. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses. LESTER JOHN SEYLER. Witnesses:
KATHELEEN HARRIS,
R. L. SEAMAN.
