To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES C. (laser, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, who has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Workholders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a work holder and has special reference to a collapsible work holder, distributor or the like which may be advantageously used on a desk,

' library table, or other structure for the filing away, organizing work, or assorting of various kinds of papers.

My invention aims to provide a work holder which when empty is comparatively flat and gradually assumes book form as it is filled with papers and other matter. It is in this connection that the binding for the holder is flexible so that the back portion of the holder may lie in a plane as the side cover or wall thereof. When in such position the edges of the leaves or partitions of the holder are stepped so that the holder may be opened at a desired place. To this end, each leaf or partition is cut on a bias, at a corner thereof and provided with a finger-piece, which serves functionally as a holder for a name plate, indicia tab, or other marker adapted to identify or indicate the nature of the papers or other matter placed in compartments or stalls of the work holder. readily applicable to a leaf or partition of the work holder, and highly efiicient in facilitating manipulation of the holder leaves or partitions.

The mechanical construction enteringinto the work holder will be hereinafter described and then claimed,,and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the work holder with one of the covers thereof partly turned back as though the cover was to be opened;

Fig. 2 is an edge view of a portion of the work holder as though filled with papers, thus assuming a book form;

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the work holder taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1 and showing the work holder in the shape of a book, and

Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the finger piece taken on the line IVIV of Fig. 1.

My work holder comprises a rigid cover piece 1 and a rigid back piece 2 and these rigid back and cover pieces are hingedly held together by a flexible cover piece 3 which extends onto the rigid back and cover pieccs'Q and 1 so as to inclose the same. The flexible cover piece 3 provides a front cover approximately the same area as the rigid cover piece 1 and this rigid cover piece really forms the back of the holder when on a table, while the flexible cover piece 3 provides a front cover which is preferably made of leather or a material which, will present a neat appearance, possess wearing quality, and aflord a hinge connection between the rigid cover and back pieces 1 and 2. The edges of the flexible cover piece 3 are inturned and suitably secured to'the rigid pieces 1 and 2 and also to an inset or filler piece 4: placed on the flexible cover piece 3. This flexible cover piece also has an inner lining 5 which may be held in place by the inturned side edge of the flexible cover piece 3 and said lining is made of a strip of material bent on itself and folded to afford linings 6 and '7 for the rigid" pieces 1 and 2. Two-ply leaves or partitions 8 between the cover pieces 1 and 8 are attached to a rigid backing piece 9 and said backing piece 9will cooperate with the folded portions of the leaves or partitions 8 and also with the lining 6 and the back piece 2 in forming a rigid back structure between the cover pieces 1 and 3.

In fabricating the work holder, glue or suitable adhesive can be employed for hold-' ing the linings 5, 6 and 7 relative to the cover and back pieces, also the backing piece 9 relative to the lining 6, thusfixing the folded portions of the two-ply leaves or partitions 8 relative to the rigid back piece 2, and since the rigid and flexible cover pieces are hingedly connected to the rigid back piece 2 the work holder may assume book form, as indicated in Fig. 3 or the rigid cover and back pieces 1 and 2 placed in a common plane with the leaves or partitions in stepped formation above said rigid cover and back pieces. This is shown in Fig. 1, where the holder is empty or approximately so and the stepped ends of the leaves or partitions are exposed. These ends or edges of the leaves or partitions 8 can be bound or provided with binders 10 of a material similar to the flexible cover piece 3.

In order that each leaf or partition may be conveniently raised, turned or opened relative to ad acent leaves or partitlons, the corner of each leaf or partition, at what may be considered a side edge of the work holder is out at a bias or angle and bound similar to the exposed straight edges of the leaves or partitions. The bias corners also afford a convenient place for the attachment of a finger piece or a name plate holder, which in its preferred form is a channel member 11 fitted and pressed on the bias corner of each leaf or partition and the wall 12 of the holder depressed so as to constrict the channel passage of the member and cause it to frictionally engage the leaf or partition to such an extent that it will not become accidentally displaced. With the channel member 11 made of metal, a cross-sectional shape may be readily imparted thereto as shown in Fig. l, and the metallic member is provided with a casing 13, preferably made of celluloid, said casing being channel-shaped with inturned edges 14, so that it may be placed endwise on the metallic member 11 and held in place by the inturned edges 14 being sandwiched between the member 11 and the leaf or partition. Now, the inbent or indented wall 12 of the member cooperates with the casing 13 in providing a slide-way 15 in which may be placed by endwise movement, a name plate 16, card, indica tab or other marker. The name plate 16 will have a face thereof exposed through the transparent celluloid casing 13 and since each leaf or partition will be properly identified, the user of the work holder may readily select the proper place at which the holder is to be opened. The celluloid casing 13 not only cooperates with the member 11 in providing a holder for the name plate 16, but prevents the fingers in gripping the member 11 from soiling or injuring the name plate. The casing also prevents corrosion of the member 11 and at all times retains said member in its original condition so that it willpresent neat appearance on the work holder.

It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is shown a preferred embodiment of my work holder, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A combined finger piece and card holder for a leaf comprising a member having configuration affording a restricted pas sage into which the leaf may extend and be frictionally held by said member, a card on said member, and means cooperating with the configuration of said member in engaging the longitudinal edges of the card and retaining the card on said member.

2. A finger piece for a leaf comprising a member having opposed walls, one of which has an indented middle portion opposite the other wall and cooperating therewith in retaining said member on the leaf, a card mounted on said member and spanning the indented middle portion of said member, and means retaining said card on said member.

3. A finger piece as called for in claim 2, wherein said means is in the form of a cover on said member and having inturned edges between the member and the leaf.

4. A. finger piece for a holder partition, comprising a channel member adapted to fit on an edge of the partition, said member having an indented wall, a transparent casing on said member and having edges held between saidmember and the partition, and

card between the indented wall of said memher and said casing. V

A combined finger piece and card holder adapted to be mounted on. a leaf and comprising a transparent channel casing, a fiat card in said casing against a wall thereof, and means adapted for attaching said casing to the leaf and retaining said card against the wall of said casing, said means having portions which cooperate in holding said casing with one of said portions sprung to frictionally engage the leaf and cause said casing to bind said card on the sprung portion of said means.
