Appntfatiori fliefr May-"15,
This invention relatesto iinpioveiiiiit frainesfoi beds and has particular reference to a corner lock therefoif,k An objecty of the invention'isto proyide a' frame for beds,'vvliicl i may be re ad i ly` quickly assembled and when in suchfposition'j Will form a coi'inectionbetiveen the' side an d end rails ofi the; frame, which will impart rigidity thereto.
Another object is to providefa cornerlock for tne side and eiid rails of a fraine,"tl ie separable parts of'vvhich are soorg'ariizedthat the same may be V.readily disassembled 'to enable the members of the frame tofoccupy a' minimum amount of storing space. The above and other objects Will'appear more clearly from the following detaillkdescription, when taken in connection'ivitli fthe accompanying drawing, which illustrates avpreferred embodiment of the inventivev idea."
En the drawing- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner of aframeeonstructed'inVA accordancejvith the invention; l
Figure 2 is a top plan'vieiv'of the b'edpost slioivn in transverse section; Y
Figure 3 is a vertical Vloi'rgitudinal'sectioni Figurev 4 isy a fragmentary perspective" vieiv ofone of Ithe'side'v rails of'thefranieg" Figure 5 is a` fragmentary elevation'of" the bedp'ost. The invention is,r shown as applied to a frame for beds, but'it is'to be expressly understood that the invention is susceptible of various applications.
Referring particularly to the drawing, 6 indicates one of the bedposts of a bed, said post being of Vtubular formation and may be made of metal or any other desirable material. Associated with the bedpost 6 is a housing, generally indicated by the numeral 7, and including a Web portion or base plate 8 extending longitudinally of the post 6 and having projecting from its vertical edges the side plates 9. The bottom of the hous- 5 in@ is forinedb asu ortiii member enc 7 erallyindicated thenunieral 10 (Figure 3') andincludingV the top plate 11, the vertical flange12,*thejbottom plate 1 3 and thel vertioalflange 14"' spaeed from the iange 12. In assemblingY theV structure the vertical flangey of the end rail 15 is engaged With the vertical flange lltjand fastening device lin the form'jof a bolt '16 is extended through saitl 'angesi and also thel flange 12 and thev baseplateS forthe p urposeof securing'tlie parts in assembled; position; The head of the] bolt "1 6 'extends beyond the base plate'S and isjinsertable into" the enlarged end of a key-shape'dopening 17' formed'in the postl 6. The portion of the inner surfacel of the post adjacent the reduced end of theV open-r ing 17 islciit aiv'ay to providea groove 18in,
which is engagedthesquared portion 19of the bolt 16 to prevent'turning of the bolt when the housing is supported in position on the post. j
Secnredto the inner sides of the side arranged inV parallel and spaced relation `7vvitlirespect tothe baseplate 8 ofthe lionsrelationl are the resilient retaining arms 23' designed to engage portions of the side rail 24 to aid in maintaining the same proper relation 'to' the end rail and bedpost.v
f tlach'-` end ,railV includes the verticalv and horizontal flanges 25 and 26 the latter of which is cntk transversely adjacent one end of the rail, as indicated'at 27, (Figure 4) to forma side flange 28ivhich is'bent to avertical position in engagement with the iiange 25 and secured thereto by rivets 29, or other suitable fasteners. The extremities of the flanges 25 and 26 are then bent at right angles to form the end flanges 30 which eX- tend in opposite direc-tions with respect to each other to provide a transverse retaining portion which is designed to engage in the space between the ends 21 of the retaining` members 20 and the adjacent face of the base plate 8, as best shown in Figure a. When the rail is being thus engaged in the plates 9 lofthe 'housing adjacent the upper,v ends thereof and above the'top platell of the supportingineniber 10 are the opposed 1 retaining plates 20having end portions21 housing, the side fiange 28 and the portion of the flange 25 engaged thereby are inserted downwardly and between the resilient arms 23 which are spread apart at their ends, together with the free extremities of the portions 22 so that said portions and arms lwill be placed under tension to frictionally retain the side rail in its proper position. To facilitate the engagement of the fianges 25 and 28 between the members 2Q and 23 the lower edges of said flanges are beveled, as indicated at 3l. W hen the side rail is in position the horizontal flange 26 thereof and the lower edges of the flanges 25, 28 and 30 will rest upon the top plate ll of the supporting' member l0.
It will lbe obvious from the foregoing description that the frame may be readily disengaged from the posts 6 by iirst lifting the frame to register the heads of the bolts 16 with the enlarged portions of the openings 17, whereupon said bolts may be withdrawn from engagement with the posts. Then by removing the nuts 32 mounted on the bolts 16 the end rails may be detached from the housings. It will also be understood that the side rails may be disconnected from the housings by lifting the saine from engagement with the various retaining memers.
What is claimed is:
l. In a frame forbeds, a corner post, a housing carried thereby and including a web and side plates extending from said web, cooperating retaining elements each ot which has an intermediate portion secured to one of said side plates and an end portion extending laterally from said side pla-te in spaced relation to said web, the other end portions of said retaining elements being arranged in converging relation, and a rail having a portion extending between the converging end portions ofsaid retaining elefments and also having other portions engageable between the rst named end portions of said retaining ele-ments and said web.
2. In a frame for beds, a corner post, a housing carried thereby and including a web and side plates extending from said web, cooperating retaining elements each of which has an intermediate portion secured to one of said side plates and 'an end portion extendinglaterally from said side plate in spaced relation to said web, .the other end portions of said retaining elements being arranged in converging relation, a rail having a portion extending between the converging end portions of said retaining elements and also havin other portions engageable between the rst named end portions of said retaining elements and said web, and resilienty retaining members having adjacent ends secured to the converging ends of said retaining elements and between which the first named por-tion of said rail is engaged. f
e 3. lIn a frame for beds, a corner post, a housing supported thereby, retaining members within said housing, and a rail including vertical and horizontal flanges, the vertical flange having its extremity bent to provide an end flange and the horizontal ange being cut to form a side flange in engagement with said vertical fiange, said horizontal flange being also bent at its extremity to provide a second end flange, said end iiangesbeing enga-geable between said re.- taining members and a portion of said housing, and said vertical and side iianges being engadeable between said retaining members.
t. In a frame for beds, a corner post, a housing, a supporting mem-ber formed in the bottom of said housing, retaining members in said housing above said supporting member, a rail, means for attaching said rail to said supporting member and engageable with said bedpost to support the frame in operative position, and aV second rail having a portion engaged between said ret-aining members and another portion betwe n said retaining members and a portion of said housing.
5. In a frame for beds, a corner post, a. housing supported thereby and including a web, side plates extending from said web, a bottom for said housing, a rail supported on the bottom of said housing and having laterally extending end portions engageable with said web and an adjacent portion extending between said side plates, and retain- Ving elements carried by said side plates on opposite sides of the second named portion of said rail'and `having `adjacent ends engageable with said second named portion and opposite ends engageable with the first named portions of said rail.
