Be it known that I, SIEBREN G. DE V Riss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids,-county of Kent,State .of Michigan, have yinvented* certain new and useful Improvements in Watches and Clocks, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in` clocks and watches.
The main object of thisinvention is to provide an improved double-faced clock or watch which is compact and simple in structure.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and meansdescribed in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a front perspective view of a clock embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a detail view of the mechanism frame with part of the gearing, showing details of driving means for the second set of hands.
Fig. III is a detail view partially in section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. II and IV.
Fig. IV is a detail view partially in section on a line corresponding to line 4-4 of Figs. II, III and V.
Fig. V is a detail view partially in section on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Figs. II and IV.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, the casing 1 has glass panels, the clock casing 2 being mounted therein. Only one face of the clock casing is shown as the other is a duplicate thereof. The pendulum 3 depends from the casing 2, the trains of gears and the springs being enclosed within the casing 2. The clockis provided with two faces 4. The gearing and springs are supported by a. frame Comprising spaced, side members 5 suitably connected and carried by the shafts and spindles for` the trains of gears.
The springs and hand supports are not illustrated l as they form no part of this invention and no part of the striking mechanism is shown.
6 designates the main shaft or arbor which is extended through both faces 4. The minute hand 7 at one side is mounted on thisl arbor, 6 to rotate therewith. The hour hand 8 is mounted on the hub 9 of the driven pinion 10.v This driven pinion 10 is connected by the train of reducing gears 11 to the pinion 12 on the arbor or shaft 6. This is a common construction.
On the opposite end of the shaft or arbor 6 is a sleeve or cannon pinion 13 having fric-tional engagement with the arbor. This sleeve or cannon pinion 13 is of well known construction, the sleeve engaging the arbor 6 with sufficient friction to cause the parts to normally rotate together, at the same time permitting relative adjustment as in Setting the hands. On the sleeve of this pinion 13 is a sleeve 14 of the sleeve pinion 16.V The minute hand 15 is carried by the sleeve 14. The pinion 16 is connected to the shaft 6 through the pinion 13 and the pinions 17 and 18 so that the sleeve 14 is driven at the same speed as the shaft but in the opposite direction. The hour hand 19 is mounted on the sleeve 2O of the sleeve pinions 21 which are connected by a train of gears 22, 23, and 24 to the pinion 16, the pinion 24 being secured to the pinion 16. The sleeve 20 is mounted on the sleeve 14. The hour hand is thus properly timed and driven. This enables the setting of the hands on the reverse side with the main set..
IVitli this Simple arrangement I provide a doublefaced or double dial clock or timepiece with little addition to the regular mechanism. I have illustrated and described my improvement as embodied in one type of clock. I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate other embodiments as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent iS:
1. In a double-faced clock, the combination of oppositely facing dials, a main shaft or arbor, driving means therefor, a minute hand mounted on one endet said arbor to rotate therewith, an hour hand provided with a sleeve rotatably mounted at such end, a train of driving gears'connecting' said 5 sleeve to Said arbor, a driving gear mount?
