CLOCK.
Specification of Letters -Patent. Application led January 20, 1912 Serial No. 672,266.
Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
To allwwm 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsADoREGRnENwAID, a subject ofthe King of Hungary, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county 4of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Clocks, of which the following is a specifihad therein to the accompanying drawing.
and the/primary rev-ide aclock. having a .anism in connection with the vhands of the clock that produce anillusionary, eii'ectas'though the hands moved without ,any actuating, means, thereby mystifying .an observer o the clock to that eX- tent as to cause sal-'greater observation and invention. is to in all probability an examination lof 'thel clockfto determine the modus operandi.
Another object of this invention is to provide a c'lcckwith transparent faces, one. of which serves functionally as adial,v and to conceal thehand transmission mechanism a manner thatthe hands will have the appearance otmoving free of any actuating mechanism. y
A further object of this invention isto provide a pedestal, clock with atran'sparent body and-dial and with an operati'ii mech. y anism that is concealed within the ase of the pedestal and faces vof the clock for moving the hands in front ofthe dial.
A 'still further object of` this. invention is to accomplish the above results -by a sim durableand inexpensive clock mecha- Anism thatcan be easily assembled in various forms calculated to produce a mystery as e to theexact operation of the mechanism.
With the Vabove 'and other' objects in view the invention resides in a novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and v y then claimed.
- in which Reference willnowrbe had tothe drawings, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure iis 'afront'elevationf of theclock. Fig.'2 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away and partly in-section. Fig. 3 is an 'enlarged transverse section of a por- Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the clock. lFig.'
This invention relates to clocks, and other object ofmy 5 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the transparent transmission Awheels or disks. Fig. 6 is an elevation of a detached gear wheel adapted to form part of the escapement of the clock and Fig. 7 is an ele vation of .a detachedcheck pawl of the escapement. l
4A clock'in accordance with this inventioncomprises ,a hollow ornamental base 1 having a top plate 2 thereof :provided with a centralsleeve or socket 3. 'Located within the base 1, is a'housingwi provided with a central sleeve 5. .This housing contains a conventional formI .of clock mechanism or train, including springs, wheels, and elements common to anordinary clock. The bottom ofA the base 1 and the bottom of the housing'et areopen, whereby easy access can be had to the clock mechanism for Winding purposes. Mounted in the sleeve 53y is the lower end of a tubular hollow podes tal 7 retainedwithin the sleeve 5 by a ser screw i8. The upper end of the pedestal is fla-red and provided with a U-shaped frame A8% In `the Pedestal? there are 1oeated bushings 9,' orja. vertical revoluble shaft 10 that -has.the.lower end provided with al pinion 11 meshingwith one of the large gears of the clookmeehanism 6. The upper'end of the shaft 10has a yhorizontal cup shaped gear 12 for a lpurpose that will presently appear. The frame .8* presents longitudinal shoulders' 13,` and mounted u on these shoulders againstthe end walls o the frame are the of circular .face plates land'. 16. These face plates are arranged in` parallelismand are connected b a strap" 17 having ends termina-ting at t e frame' 8". The strap 17 canv be soldered'or otherwise connected to the face plates 15 and 16. The face plate 15 has the inner side thereof provided with an annular seat 18 for 'a' transparent dial 19 having a vcentral ,opening 20.
'side of the face plate 16 has an annular seat 21 for a transparent back plate 22.V
The back plate 22 is retained upon the seat 21 by a ring 23`arranged 'against the face the lower edge plate 16, said ring having thereof cut away, as at 24 contiguous to the frame 8a. Mounted in the central opening 2O of the dial 19 is a tubular bearing which is retained within the opening by a `sleeve 25: Journaled in the tubular bearing- The innerv
