RIM-PUNCHING MACHINE.

To all'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL J. GRACE,
a citizen of the United States,'residing at Erie, in the county of'Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rim-Punching Machines,/
of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to punch wheel rims, particularly Wheel rims provided with channels in which small rubber tires are placed. Heretofore the practiceV has been to punch these holes' 'separately with the result that the rims: are often *shifted somewhat out Yof round and 'this slight shift or distortion varied the distanoes between the openings. With the present device all the holes are punched at `once and the rim is held in proper contour at the time the punching is'done so that the work is done uniformly and at the same time the entire punching is performed with `one operation. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a plan view, partly in section. i

1 marks the table on which the machine is mounted, 2 the legs supporting the table, 3 a hollow post extending up from the table, and 4a die platform. The platform has a series of radially extending slots 5. Die blocks 6 are sldingly mounted in these slots. The die blocks have the extending lianges 7 (see Fig. 5) and plates 8 are arranged over these flanges and look the vdie blocks in the grooves or slots 5. The die block has an opening 9 at its forward face in which the die 10 itself is secured, the die having an opening 11 into which the punch enters and having a rounded end .conforming to the shape of the channel of the rim. An opening 12 extends vertically through the block at the rear of the opening 11 through which chips may be discharged. The'die ldies 10.- j'

A channelfll is arranged below the groove 5 into whichl chips vmay enter from the opening 12 and'openings 15 extend through the bottom of the platform so that these chips may be discharged.k
Links 16 are pivotallyfmounted on `the rear of the blocks by means of -pins'.17.` The links are pivotally secured to an operating ring 18. The ring 18 has an annul'ar'tongue 19 which is rotatively mounted -in v'aniannular groove 2O in thel platform. Thejlinks n are secured in the ring by pins21,these pins being readily lifted out of place so that differentlengths of links maybe inserted to take care of different diametersof, rims. vwith the dieopenings SprnlgSQQl-are arranged in grooves 29 below the grooveslf, the springs seating against studs 27 at their outerr endsv and against studs 28 carried by the blocks 22 at the inner ends, the effect of the spring being to push the blocks 22 inwardly so as to retract the punches. A cam block 30 polygonally shaped having cam surfaces corresponding in number to the blocks 22 is arranged at the center of the machine.v The camr block vhas a screwthreaded end 33 which is screwed into the bar 34. The bar 34 reciprocates in a bearing 34a in the post 3, and a connecting 'rod 35 extends from the bar34 to a crank 37. Thecrank 37 is mounted on a shaft 38. The shaft 38 is journaled in'bearings 39,
these bearings being secured by bolts 4() toy the underside of the table 1. It will readily be seen that'as the shaft 38 is rotated, the
cam mounting or'bar 34 is reciprocated and the cam block drawn down to force the punches outwardly and moved upwardly to relieve the punches.
In order that the shaft may make one operation and then be locked out I provide the following mechanism: A drive wheel 4l is mounted on an extension of the shaft 38 and is provided with clutch projections 42 which are hardened pieces secured to the wheel by bolts 42a. These projections engage the detentsA 43 carried by a sliding collar 44, the block 43 being secured'to the collar by bolts 43, rlhe collar is slidingly mounted? onv the shaft 38 but locked against rotation by a` spline 45. Springs 46 are mounted in pockets 47 in the collar 44 and rest against pins 48, the pins 48 being carried by a collar 49 arranged on the shaft L These springs tend to force the sliding clutch collar'44 forwardly or into engagement. The collar' 44 has a lock-out pin 50 which in the rotation of the collar engages a'eam surfzjtc'eVV 53 lon a trip lever 51, the engagement of the 'camp surface moving the collar 'against the springs to the left as shown in Fig. 2 and throwing the clutch out of engagement. The trip lever is mounted on apin 52. `It is held upwardly and in the path of the pin 50 by means of a spring 54'. 'A link 55 connects the trip lever 5l -W'it'h a foot' treadle lever 56 by means of which the trip levermay swing downwardly 4so as to be'outof the path of the pin 50, thus'y permitting the clutch to set. The
