The invention relates to machines for sizing and punching rims and is designed particularly for use in'sizing and punching vehicle wheel rims such as demo'untable rims and permanent rims or fellies. One of the objects of the invention is to provide a continually operating machine, which is arranged to successively size and punch the rim during one cycle at the end of which the sized and punched rim may be removed and replaced by another rim to be sized and punched. Other objects are to provide a simple arrangement for guiding both the rim sizing blocks and the rim punch; to
'provide heads which are reciprocable in directions transverse to those of the rim sizing blocks and punch for actuating the same; and to provide revoluble means for reciprocating the heads and thereby actuating the rim sizing blocks and punch. A further object is the provision of means for shrinking a transversely split rim and then shearing its end portions to make the same parallel. With these as well as other objects in view the lnvention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth;

As shown in the present instance, the machine is employed to size and punch a demountable rim 1, which is of the transversely split type and is provided with the apertures 2 near its endsv for the passage of the rivetsfor securin tures 3 for the passage of the valve stem the interlocking plates tothe ends of the rim, with the ap'er-' passage of the rivets for securing the rim dr ving lug. The machine has the annular series of radially inwardly movable blocks 5 which are engageable with the rim to shrink the same to size and also the radially outwardly movable holders punches and the supporting blocks 7 which are diametrically opposite the holders for the punches which form the apertures 2 and 3,.in the rim. 1
Each block 5 is mounted upon the radially movable segmental shaped slide 8 and each punch holder 6 and supporting block 7 slidably engages in vthe radially extendin channel 9 of the slide 8 at the side thereo The slides 8 slidably engage in radially extending channels 10 formed in thehead- 11 of the machine Any suitablev means may be employed for holding the slides 8, blocks 7 and holders 6 in assembled position, herein shown as comprisin a pair of rings 7' and 8 secured to the l iead 11 by means of the bolts 11.
For actuating the blocks 5 the head 11 is reciprocated in directions transverse to the radial movements of the blocks. As shown, the machine has the annular stationary abutment or frame member 12, which surrounds the slides 8. Intermediate these slides and the stationary abutment or frame member are the toggle links 13, which preferably have their ends journaled upon the pins 14 and 15, respectively, secured to the slides 8 and stationary abutment or frame member 12. The head 11 is secured to the hollow shaft 16, which extends rearwardly .shaft.-, The cams 18 are secured upon -the crankshaft 2O whichis journaled in the base 21 of the machine and is suitably driven by reduction gearing. For holding the rollers 6 for the 19 against the cams 18 I have provided suitable resilient means such as the coil springs 22 which extend from the head 11 to the lower rear end of the frame member 17.
For actuating the punch holders 6 and sizing blocks supporting blocks 7 there is the head 23 which is mounted upon the shaft 24 and is adapted to be reciprocated by means of the shoulder 25 upon the shaft and the nut 26 threaded upon the end of the-shaft, the arrangement being such that the head 23 has a lost motion connection with the shaft 24: and that the amount of travel of the head may be varied. Rotation of the head 23 relativie to the shaft 24 is prevented by means of a longitudinally extending key at shaft 20 through the link 30 whichpivotally connects the crank shaft to the shaft and is located between the cams 18.
With the arrangement as thus far set forth, it will be seen that my machine may be continuously operated to move the rim and punches, and supporting blocks in timed relation to each other to successively size the rim and punch the same. It will also be seen that a sufficient time interval may be allowed at the end of each cycle to remove the sized punched rim and replace the same with another to be sized and punched.
For the purpose of sizing the transversely split rim and providing ends which are parallel to each other, the punch holder 6 for holding the members 31 which ierce the apertures 2 also holds thecombined positioning and shearing member 32 which is located between the piercing members 31. This combined positioning and shearing member has the outer reduced pilot portion 33 which is normally located between the ends of the rim beforeits end portions are sheared. This member also has the radially inwardly positioned enlarged portion 34 providing the parallel shearing shoulders 35 which are. brou ht into engagement with the end portions of the .rim, after the latter has been shrunk to size, to shear these end portions and thereby make theends of the completed rini parallel to each other, allowance having been made for the stock removed from the rim so that the final dimensions of the rim are correct. The piercing members 31 are located relative to the shearing shoulders 35 so that they come into engage- I ment at practically the same time as the shearing shoulders. The supporting blocks 7 are so arranged that they comeinto contact face of the rim diametrically opposite the combined positionin and shearing member 32 and piercing mem ers 31 and the piercing with the inner member 37 at the time these members are operating upon the rim, thereby holding the rim to size.

4. In a rim sizing and punching machine, the combination with a reciprocable head, of areciprocable shaft guided by said head, a second head arranged to be reciprocated. by said shaft in a direction parallel to that of said first mentioned head, radially movable blocks slidably mounted u on said first mentioned head and engagea le with the rim to size the same, a radially movable punch engageable with the rim and means dependent upon the reciprocation of said heads for actuating said blocks and punch.
5. In a rim sizing and punching machine, the combination with positioning means between the ends of the rim, of radially .in-
wardly movable blocks engageable with the rim to shrink the same and force its ends against said positioning means, radially outwardly movable shearing means for shearing the end portions of the rim and means for actuating said blocks and shearing means in time relation to successively shrink the rim and shear its end portions.
6. In a rim sizing and punching machine, the combination with positioning means engageable between the ends of the rim, of radially inwardly movable blocks engageable with the rim to shrink the same and force its ends against said positioning means, radially outwardly movable shearing and piercing means for respectively shearing the end portions of'the rim and piercing the rim and means for actuating said blocks and shearing and piercin means in timed relatlon to successlvely shrink the r1m, shear the end portlons of the rim and plerce the r1m.

A machine of the character described having a stationary ring member, a head movable axially with respect to said ring member and comprisinga table, an annularplate mounted on the table. in spaced relation thereto, a plurality of slide members slidable between said table and said annular plate so as to be guided thereby, toggle links between each of said slide members and saidring member, another slide member mounted on one of the first mentioned slide members, a second head mountedaxially with respect to the table, a toggle link between said second head and said other slide member, and means for moving the table and said second head in opposite directions.
19'. A machine of the character described having a stationary rin member, a main head movable axially with respect to said ring member and comprising a table, an
annular plate-mounted on the table in spaced I relation thereto, a plurality of slide members slidable between said table and said annular plate so as to be guided thereby, toggle links between each of said slide members and said ring member, another slide member mounted on the main head, a second head mounted axially with respect to the table, a toggle link between saidv second head and said other slide member, and means for move ing the table and said second head successively in opposite directions. 4

A machine of the character described comprising, in combination, a driven shaft, a table having a plurality of slide members thereon arranged in circular series, a head mounted coaxially with respect to the table, jaws on certain of said slide members, and means operable to move said slide members in one direction and said jawsin the opposite direction comprising a cam on said shaft operatively associated with said table, and
a drawbar. operatively as'sociatedwith the shaft and havin'gaa lost-motion connection with said head.

A machine 'of the character described comprising a head having two sets of jaws mounted thereon for radial sliding movement, and means for operating said jaws in opposite directions including a shaft having cam means operatively associated with the head and a drawbar also operatively associated with said shaft and having a lostmotion connection with the jaws of one of said sets.

A machine of the character described having two relatively movable axially alined heads, toggle mechanisms arranged to be actuated in the movements of said heads and 7 cam-actuated means for eflt'ecting relative movement between the heads including a shaft having a lost-motion connectionwith one of said heads. 23. A machine of the character described members operable in the movements of the respective heads, said cam means being adapted to actuate the respective members in succession, and means including a lostmotion connection operable to cause the member first actuated to remain 1n engagement with the work while the second member is actuated.
24 A machine of the character described having a pair of concentrically arranged members mounted for relative axial movement, a pair of jaws radially slidable between said members, toggle mechanisms interposed between the respective jaws and members, and means 0 crating to cause relative axlal movement etween the members and the jaws to operate said toggle mechan sms.

In a machine of the character decomprising a pair of heads, a pair of toggle mechanisms arranged to be actuated in the movements of each of said heads respec-- tively, an operating member for each of said heads, and a driven shaft operatively associated with each of said members to actuate them, theoperative association between said ope'rating shaft and the respective heads being such that one of the slides is first moved into holding engagement with the work and the other slide is then moved into en agement with the work while held by the rst slide.
27 In a machine of the character ,described, a pair of tool slides, a pair of j mbers arranged to actuate the respective s des, a driven shaft having an eccentric portion connected with one of said members, and a cam associated with the other one of said.
members, the arrangement being such that when the cam has caused its corresponding slide to move into operative position relative to the work, saideccentric will cause the other slide to move into operative position also.
28. A machine of the'character described comprising a frame, a head mounted in the frame and having a set of radially slidable Tjaws thereon, another radially slidable jaw within the first set of jaws, means operable to cause the set of jaws to move inwardly,
and means operable to cause said other jaw to move outwardly, the last mentioned means comprising a shaft extending through the head coaxially thereof, a toggle mechanism operable between said shaft and said other jaw, and means for transmitting the lateral strain on said shaft to the frame.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a pair of heads and an abutment mounted for relative movement, one of said heads being arranged intermediate said abutment and the other head, a pair of jaws mounted on the intermediate head, and means operating in the relative movement between the heads and said abutment to move said-jaws in opposite directions.

In a machine of the character described, .the combination of a pair of heads and an abutment mountedwfor relative axial movement, one of said heads being arranged intermediate the abutment and the other head, a pair of jaws mounted on the inter mediate head, and toggle links respectively coacting with said other head and the abutment on the one hand and with said jaws on the other and operableupon relative movement between the abutment and heads to cause said jaws to move in opposite directions; I

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a substantially circular table, an annular member station- 7, arily supported adjacent the table, a central head arranged concentrically within the stationary member in spaced relation thereto, a slideon the table having a pair of jaws interposed between said member and the head, toggle links interposed between the respective jaws on the one hand and the head and member on -the other, and means for movingthe table and the central head axially to cause said toggle links to operate theirrespective jaws. v
32.,A machine 'for operating upon rims for motor vehicle wheels and similar obj ects having,.in combination, a table, a series of slides mounted for radial movement on the table, means for moving said slides radially toward the center of the table said slides having a circular series of die members thereon operating in such inward movement of the slides to engage and shrink the work to a predetermined size, a cutting tool mounted on one of said slides,-and means operating upon completion of the shrinking operation to move said cutting tool into engagement with the work.
33. In a machineof the character deslide, said table and abutment members being mounted for relative axial movement,
a toggle interposed between said slide and one of said members, a die member'movable with the slide, a second die member mounted on the slide, and a second toggle interposed between said second die member and the other one of said members, the arrangement being such that in the relative axial movement between the table, and members the first mentioned die member is moved with the slide into engagement with the work and thereupon the second die member is moved upon the slide into engagement with the work.
- 34. A machine of the character described comprising in combination, a table, a circu-,
lar series of jaws mounted for radial sliding movement on the table, an abutment member surrounding said circular series of jaws, and toggle links interposed between the jaws and said member, said table and member beingmounted for relative movement, -another jaw mounted on the table so as to be adapted to receive between it and the circular series of jaws a piece of work, a head adjacent the second jaw, a toggle link interposed between the head and the second jaw, and means for effecting relative movement first between the table and said member to move the circular series of jaws into engagement with the work, then to effect relative movement between the head and the table whereby to move the second jaw v into engagement with the work.

A machine of the character described comprising, incombination, a table, a circular series of jaws mounted for radial sliding movement on the table, an abutment member surrounding said circular series of jaws, said table and member being mounted for relative movement, another jaw mounted .on the table so as to be adapted to receive between it and the circular series of jaws a piece of work, a head adjacent the second jaw, means for effecting relative movement first between the table and said member, and means operating in such relative movement first to move the circular series of jaws into engagement with the work and then to efiect relative movement between the head and the table whereby to move the second jaw into engagement with the work. i

In a rim sizing and punching machine, the combination with means for sizing a rim, including a radially movable block engageable with the rim, of a punch engageable with the rim and movable independently of and guided by said block, and means for actuating said -rim sizing means and punch in timed relation to successively size and punch the rim. v t
