NlTE'D res PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. GARTSIDE, OF 'YQRK, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR. TRIIVIMING SHEET MATERIAL.
' Application filed May 4,
the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to trimming the edges of wall paper and other sheet material and has reference more particularly to trimming borders having designs of irregular outline, printed thereon. Heretofore, it has been customary to employ a rotatable cutter for totally or partially severing the edge portion of the paper from the printed border, but it is the object of my invention to provide an improved machine whereby the paper is burnt by acid, and is thus weakened to such an extent'that the edge portion of the strip or sheet may be easily torn from the border, without any liability of injuring the latter.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is'a perspectlveview of a wall paper printing machine embodying my invention. v
Figure 2 is a detail vertical sectional view showing more particularly the manner in which the acid is applied to the paper.
Figure 3 is a detail elevation of a portion of the roller which applies the acid.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates the usual drum of a wall paper printing machine around which the sheet of paper 2 is adapted to travel to have its design printed in different colors by the spaced printing rollers 3 or other printing devices, each supplied with the coloring matter, by means of a belt 4 and a pot 5 containing the paint, ink or the like. I
Associated with the drum 1 in the same manner as the rollers 3, I have shown an additional roller 6 having a circumferential flange or ridge 7 at one or both ends, of such shape as to follow the outline of the border or other design printed upon the sheet 2. Any suitable provision is made 1923. Serial no. 636,655.
for applying some suitable acid to the outer edge of the flange or ridge 7 so that it will in turn be applied to the sheet on a line taking the desired directions. It thus follows that the acid decreases the strength of the sheet along this line and permits it to be readily severed without any danger of mutilating the border or other design. Sulphuric acid is preferably used and in order that it shall not leave a scorched appearance on the sheet, I prefer that it shall Ltoaoes be mixed with a suitable amount of coloring matter. Thus, the edge of the border or the like will have a line of desired color printed thereon.
For supplying acid to the flanges or ridges 7, I provide a suitable acid-proof belt 8,
an acid pot 9 and suitable rollers, or any other desired means.
By employing the improved machine, a great deal of difficulties previously encountered are effectively overcome and particular attention is directed to the fact that by printing a line with acid upon the paper s1- multaneously-with the printing operation, there is no danger of the trimmed edge not conforming properly to the edge of the border or other design. Attention may also be directed to the fact that although the invention is intended primarily for use in the manufacture of wall paper, it is not restricted to this particular field. Moreover, it is to be understood that the present disclosure is for il ustrative purposes only and that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made and numerous wall paper machines now in use may be constructed to embody the invention.
I claim:
l. The combination with a printing machine having means for printing a design on a sheet; of means for printing a line with acid along the edge of the design to' weaken the sheet and permit its edge to be easily torn off.
2. A machine of the class described comprising means for guiding a sheet ofmaterial, a roller adjacent the sheet path having a circumferential ridge for contact with the sheet, and means for applying a sheet burning acid to said ridge.
3. The combination wlth a sheet printmg machine comprising a drum around which the sheet passes, and printing devices spaced around said drum to print a. de-,
mea'ns 'positivelylguidedb-y means other than said design, for applying a, sheet burning 10 said to said sheetalong the edge of the de slgn thereon.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my slgna-ture.
"JOHN E. GARTSIDEE.
