The main objects of my invention are:
First, to provide an improved method of preventing offset in printing which may be economically practiced with simple and compact apparatus.
Second, to provide an improved method of preventing ofisetting in printing which is eflicient and greatly increases production.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my improvements will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
The manner of carrying out my improved method is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure is a diagram matic view of an apparatus by means of which my improved method of preventing offsetting may be practiced. 7
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a roll of paper to be printed, 52 the web of paper and 3 a printing machine. At the rear of the printing cylinders I support a heated roller 4 so that the unprinted side of the web contacts with this roller. is sufiicientl heated to heat the paper to a substantial egree and this heat increases the drying or setting action of the ink.
At the rear of this heating roller I mount a chilling and moistening roller 5 positioned so that the web of paper may be brought into contact therewith romptly after leavin the heating roller. he roller 5 is cooled by means of a suitable refrigerant to such an extent that frost is formed on thesurface of the roller. As the web of paper passes into contact with the rotating roller the paper is cooled and, owing to the melting of the frost, the paper is moistened.-
After leaving the roller 5 the web of paper is wound or rolled up, the roll being indicated at 6, thereby bringing the moistened side of the paper in opposed relation to the printed side as the paper is wound up. Inasmuch as printing mks commonly employ an Oll base or vehicle the moistened surface constitutes a resistant to the ink thereby effectively preventing offsetting.
The apparatus is simple and may be readily installed with printing machines as commonly employed. I have not attempted to The roller illustrate or describe various embodiments or additions of my improvements as it is believed that thisdisclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The method of preventing offsetting consisting ofprinting, passing the printed paper over a heated roller with the unprinted s1de in contact with the roller, passing while still heated over a roller cooled by means re sulting in frost collecting on the surface of the roller whereby the paper is cooled and moistened, and winding into a roll while still moistened.
' 2. The method of preventing offsetting consisting of printing, subjecting to a heating means and while still heated passing the unprinted side of the web over an element cooled by means resulting in the collection of.
frost on the element so that the paper is moistened by such contact, and winding into a roll while still moistened.
3. The method of reventing offsetting consisting of printing, bringing the unprinted side of the paper into contact with a heating element and while still heated bringing it into contact with an element cooled by means resulting in frost collecting on the surface of the elementwhereby the paper is cooled and moistened, and winding while still moistened.
4. The method of preventing ofisetting hand.
