of the two main tapes of different colors.
yWith the above and other objects in view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosure, this invention includes all features of the said disclosure, which are novel over the prior art.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of the present disclosure, in which certain ways of carrying out the invention are shown for illustrative purposes: l
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation illustrating one way of carrying out the present invention;
Fig. 2 is atop plan' view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; j
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary cross sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. l;
Referring to Figs. l to 6 of the drawings whichl illustrate one way of carrying out the present invention, the Venetian blind ladder-tape II) of usual form, has two -woven body or main tapes II and I2 interconnected by ladder-rungs I3 interwoven with the two main tapes II and I2, the two main tapes being of the same surface appearance, whether being due to being uncolored or colored. ladder-tape of attractive appearance, I apply any desired color or colors to one or both of the outer faces I4 and I5 respectively, of the main tapes II and I2. Suchexpressions as two colors" or diiferent colors is intended to include where one surface appearance is different from In order to produce Venetian blind (Cl. ill-67.9)
another, regardless of whether either or both contain any true colon As the ladder-tape I0 travels from left to right of Figs. 1 and 2, the lifter-flanges I 6 and I1 of the guide-member I8 engage the upper main tape I2 and lift the edge portions I9 and 20 thereof upwardly as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, to permit paper or the like shield-tapes 2| and 22, whichv are fed downwardly and around pins or rollers 23 and 24, to pass between the edge portions of the main tapes II and I2 and thence into the guides 25 and 26 of the guide-member I8. As the tape I2 passes beyond the rear edges of the lifter-flanges I6 and I1, the edge portions I9 and 20 of the tape I2 atten out again somewhat as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 4, and as the main tapes II and I2' and paper shield-tapes 2| and 22 pass beyond the end of the rear end 2 of the guidel member I8, they pass between idler-rollers 28 and 29 and then between a printing-roll or roller 30 and a pressure-roll or roller 3|, with the paper shield-tapes 2| and 22 located between the edges of the main tapes II and I2 and extending oppositely outwardly a considerable distance from the side-edges of the main tapes II and I2, as shown in Fig. 5.
The printing-roll 30 is preferably of metal suchfor example, as copper, and has a knurled portion 32 'which constitutes the ink-applying surface of the printing-roll 30, the ink being applied to the knurled surface 32 in any suitable Way, as for example by means of an inkingbrush 33. Any suitable ink may be used, such for example as water-proof lacquerv ink. The pressure-roll 3| preferably has a resilient surface portion 34 of rubber or other suitable material to aid in securing a more perfect and uniform printing of the surface I4 of. the main tape II.
After the ladder-tape passes beyond the printing-roll 3U, it may be given a sufficient distance of travel to permit it to dry in the air or it may be passed through a suitable heating oven to hasten the drying. If it is only desired to have the one color applied to the surface I4 of the main tape II and to leave the surface I5 of the other tape with its color as Woven, then thev ladder-tape is wound up on a suitable roll for storage or sale in any suitable or usual manner.
If` however, it is desired to also print the surface I5 of the main tape I2, this can be done by running the ladder-tape past a second printingroll (not shown) arranged to print the top surface of the ladder-tape shown in Fig. 1, or else by feeding the ladder-tape with a 180 twist to bring the top surface I5 of the tape I2 down to the under side to engage a printing-roll in a similar position to the printing-roll 30 shown in Fig. 1.
During the printing operation, the paper shield-tapes 2| and 22 protect the main tape l2 from having ink applied to the edges thereof, as will be seen from Fig. 5, since such ink as oozes somewhat beyond the knurled portion 32 of the printing-roll 30 will get on the under surfaces of the paper tapes 2| and 22, and will thus be prevented from getting on to the rubber portion 34 of the pressure-roll 3U, from which ink could be readily transferred to the edge portions of main tape l2, if not .protected against such action by the paper tapes. The paper shield-tapes or the like 2| and 22 can be either discarded after having been once used, or the paper tapes can be in the form of endless bands or aprons to be fed back to the original position for successive repeated use.
Instead of applying the inlr by printing methods, the ink can be applied by any other suitable process such, for example, as by being sprayed upon the tape, preferably from the under side of the tape.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 7, the two main or body tapes 35 and 36 of the Venetian blind ladder-tape 31 are preferably woven so as to have the main tape 36 somewhat l narrower than the main tape 35. In this form of the invention, the main tapes 35 and 36 are not separated during the printing operation, but a shield in the form of a wide paper tape or the like 38 extends entirely across and beyond the ladder-tape 31 as shown in Fig. '7, and has the.
shield- portions 39 and 40 to protect the rubber portion 34 of the pressure-roll 3l from getting ink thereon from the printing-roll 3U during the printing operation, and thus avoiding having the rubber portion of the pressure-roll 30 transferring ink to the side and rear of the edge portions of main tape 36. While the main tape 36 could be of the same width as the main tape 35, by having it somewhat narrower as illustrated in Fig. 7, with the side edges of the tape 36 somewhat back away from the side edges of the tape 35, there is less tendency for ink to get upon the side edges of the tape 36, The shield or apron tape 38 can be of endless form so as to be used over and over again in a similar manner as that described concerning the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
