Well-Tubes. .No 150193 Patented April 28,1874.

THOMAS SANDBAOH AND ARCHIBALD DEFREES, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WELL-TUBES.l
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,193, dated April 28, 1874; application filed June 25,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS SANDBACH and ARCHIBALD Dnrnnns, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Vell Tube, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object to produce a wooden well-tube, which is to be used in making wells, and will subsequently form a part of the completed well.
By making such a well tube of wood, and of simple construction, persons who are not skilled in the art of iron-working, or who re side at considerable distance from manufacturing places or railroads, will be enabled to sink and construct their own wells Without great expense.
Our invention consists in the use of a wooden well-tube, whose point may be shod with metal, and whose sides, near the lower end, are mort-ised, to form outwardly-extendingl openings from the central boring. These mortises are covered with wire-gauze, which will admit the water to, but exclude the soil from, the interior, and which is kept in place by means of slotted boards laid over it in recesses that are cut in the sides of the tube, so that the faces of the boards will be flush with those ofthe tube.
Figure l is a longitudinal section of our improved well-tube. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same through the line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
In the drawing,l the letter A represents a hollow wooden well-tube, preferably ot' prismatic form, terminating into a point, B, which is shod with metal. Mortises a a are cut through each side of the tube, directly above the point B, and communicating with the bore of the tube. Wire-gauze b is laid over each ot' the ruortises, and kept in place by means ot' slotted boards d d, which are tted into recesses cut iu the sides of the tube, so that the faces of the boards d will be flush with the faces of the tube into which they are placed. The boards d are nailed or s'crewedto the tube A, or otherwise fastened in proper manner.
The tube thus constructed can be rammed or otherwise driven' into the soil until water is reached by its lower perforated part, and is then left in the ground and connected at its upper end with suitable tubing that will compose the upper part of the well.
We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv A wooden well-tube, A, pointed at and mortised near the lower end, and recessed, as described, to receive the gauze b over the mortises, and the slotted boards d over the gauze, substantially as specified.
THOMAS SANDBAOH. ARCHIBALD DEFREES.
