Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.Ions MoMsEN, or DE WITT, IowA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,151, dated June 1G, 1874; application filed April 1l, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN lWIOMsEN, of De Witt, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Yell-Boring Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specifica-tion.
Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a section on liuc ay ay of Figs. l and 2.
My invention relates to an improved auger for boring wells, as hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings.
A represents a square shaft, which connects with the boring-machine. B is a couplingjoint, the top of which is provided with a square socket to receive shaft A, and the lower end made with a female screw to fit the screw on the upper end of shaft C, which extends through the anges or pockets to the boring-point, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. D represents a large fiange and pocket, and E a smaller pocket. F is a coneshaped spiral boring-point, the upper end of the shank of which is provided with a female screw to receive and fit the screw on the lower end of the shaft C, as seen in Fig. 2. G and H are lips for gathering and conveying the earth into the pockets E and D. These lips are provided with cutters or spurs b d on their outer edges to cut and gather the earth beyond the line of the pockets, to prevent them from binding against the walls of the well. I and J are hinged valves over lips Gr and II. The pockets, lips, and spurs are cast in the same piece, and are faced with steel. The lower plates of the pockets are made with square holes to lit over the square part of the shaft C. The upper pocket D is heldin place by a screw-nut, K, and the lower pocket is held by the upper end of the shank of point F, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The pockets, thus constructed, are readily attached, removed, or changed, as required. Each machine is provided with two or more of the pockets of different diameters, Withthe view of using one or more at the same time, as the condition of the earth will permit. If the earth is very hard, the pocket and flange D may be stopped or removed by unscrewing nut K, and the pocket and ange E maybe used alone. Then the earth is in condition to be easily worked all Vof the flanges and pockets may be employed.
To raise the pockets, a sleeve, c, provided with eye c, is placed ou shaft C, below' the coupling-joint B, to which the hoisting rope or chain d' is attached. The point F guides the auger, and by its spiral flanges stirs the earth, and thus prepares it to be more readily gathered by the lips into the pockets. The lips are arranged on opposite sides of the shaft to balance each other, and thus aid the machine to run straight.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent in an au ger for boring wells, 1s-
1. The combination of two or more removable and adjustable iianges and pockets, D E, upon a boring-shaft, C, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of point F, shaft C, and anges and pockets D E, having lips G H, and spurs b d, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d dayI of April, 1874.
JOHN MOMSEN.
