RICHARD A. WHITMORE, OF DE WITT, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUGER-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,883, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. WHIT- MORE, of the town of De Witt, county of Arkansas, in the State of Arkansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Auger-Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked th ereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is arepresentation of the shank and auger-bit; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same, showing the hollow cylindershank.
My invention relates to angers as used by hand or power; and consists in having the shank of the same a hollow cylinder, so as to enable itself to clear away as it bores the cuttings without having to withdraw it, thus preventing it choking itself; also, with providing on the shank a scale, thus enabling the operator to ascertain the depth at which he has bored without withdrawing the anger, or to enable him to bore to a certain mark on the scale and then stopping; thus for a number of holes stopping at the same mark on the scale, a uniform depth of the holes will be obtained.
Fig. 1, A is the hollow-cylinder shank; B, scale on the shank; O, cutter at the end of the shank; D, the upper end of the shank, on which a cross-piece can be attached for handpower, or an attachment can be made to any boring device or machine, as may be desired.
This anger is worked in the same manner as any other auger, and the object is to substitute it for others now in use. It is to be attached as others now in use are attached, either for hand or power, but my construction enables the auger as it boresto clear itself of its cuttings, thus preventing it choking and enabling the workman to bore with greater ease and to make a trueand clean hole.
With the attachment of the scale to the shank of the anger the advantage is that, at all times, while the operator is boring, the exact depth at which he has bored can be ascertained without withdrawing the same, thus saving much time and labor, and where a number of holes have to be bored of the same depth the same can easily and with a certainty be accomplished; and, moreover, whenever the auger is withdrawn it clears the hole at once of all trash.
I claim The auger herein shown and described, consisting of the tubular shank A, provided with scale B and cutting-lip G, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD A. WHITMORE.
