UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. PANCOAST. OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PRINTING Application filed January 4.
To (1U whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gsonon E. PANooAs'r, a citizen of the lnited States, residing at New York city, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Machines, fully described and represented in the fol lowing specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in nmlti-color printin machines.
It is the especial object of the invention to provide a construction and arrangement of printing and prefer-ting mechanisms and a folder for printing and perfecting a plu rality of webs in black, in color, or in black and color. the construction including guides and angle bars for so leading the'webs from the printing mechanisms to the folder that the webs may go to the folder either side up and the color and black webs may be placed in desired position with each other. and products may be produced having black and color pages arranged in combinations which cannot be produced with previous color press arrangements so far as known to me.
A further object of the invention is to produce a press construction and folder in which these products may be produced on either a right angle folder. that is a folder at the side of the press, or a straight line folder at the end of the press.
With these and other objects not specili: cally referred to in view, the invention consists in certain novel arrangements and combinations which will be described in detail in connection with the accompanying draw ings and the novel features then pointed out in the claiins annexed hereto.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of a mnlti-color printing and perfecting mechanism employing three webs and in which there are shown twelve printing couples with the angle bars and web guides showing the run of the three webs for producing special black and color products.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic end view on a somewhat enlarged scale of the web guides and angle bars showing the web runs of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow 2 of that figure, the product being illustrated as being run to one or more formers arranged at one side of the printing mechanisms.
MACHINE.
1922. Serial No. 526.999.
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the run of one of the webs as led to a side folder.
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic plan View showln a modification of the arrangement shown 111 Fig. 3 which may be used with a side folder.
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic plan view showing the run one of the webs when a straight line folder is used; and
Figure 6 is a diagram of the pages of the product produced with the three web run shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the color pages being indicated by circles surrounding the page designations.
Referring now to these drawings, an arrangement has been shown which will produce a twenty four page product haii'ng one special combination of black and color pages. In the arrangementshown thisprodnot is produced from three webs printed from printing and perfecting mechanisms in which the plates are arranged on the cylinders four wide, and in which the color pages are printed in four colors. In this product produced by the arrangement, shown, pages 1, 6, 10, 12, 13, 15, 19 and 21 (see Fig. 6) are printed in colors (four colors) and the remaining pages are printed in black. The folded product produced has the two outside pages in color and the two inside pages in color with other color pages between successive three black pages, at both sides of the middle of the product, this product being particularly desired in producing the so-called color section of special newspaper editions, as the Sunday editions. The arrangement for producing this product illustrates the invention, but it will be understood that other special products with special arrangements of the color and black pages may be produced with the mechanism illustrate and the invention is not to be restricted to the web runs illustrated or the product produced thereby.
In the drawings there is illustrated a twelve unit press, that is, a. press comprising twelve printing couples, these couples being arranged as shown in superposed sets of six. These couples are designated generally 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, G, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, and each includes a form cylinder 13 and an impression cylinder 14. A suitable inking mechanism, indicated by the numeral 15, is provided for each couple, this mechanism fl U being arranged so that it may he moved bodily back from the form cylinders as shown at the left in Fig. 1, so as to leave a clear access to the cylinders for dressing them with the plates. The form and impression cylinders and the inking mechanism are supported in suitable side frames 16, and cross frames 17. At one side of the press are arranged brackets 18 for carrying web rolls indicated at 19, six rolls being illustrated, three of which are active and three of which are spares, the webs from the three active rolls being indicated by W, ll", Vi.
'To produce the particular product illustrated, one of these webs is printed and perfected in black and the other two webs are printed on one side in black and on the other side in colors, fourcolors being printed on these webs in the particular construction il lustrated, the web \V being printed and erfected in black and webs \V and W bein printed in black and colors.
These three webs are as before stated four pages wide. and after they have been printed and perfected are slit so as to form six webs, each two pages wide. The webs are led from the printing mechanism over suitable guide rolls 20, to the slitters, three such slitters 21, 22 and 23 being indicated in Fig. 1, and after slitting the webs are conducted to the folders.
The present invention provides means whereby these webs may be assembled at the former or folder to produce combinations of black and color pages which could not, be obtained with prior arrangements so far as known to me. Generally these means include web guides by which any of the webs may be led to the former either side up, and with the black in any desired relation to the color, whether used with a right angle folder or a folder at the end of the press in line with the web run. These guides include turning bars and guide rolls arranged to turn a web and lead it direct to the folder where the folder is a right angie one, that is, a folder at the side of the press or lead the web past or beyond the folder or out to one side of its normal path and away from the folder for reversal, and then back to the folder, said web guides also being arranged so that certain of the webs may have a longer path than the'others and may be led around outside of other webs for positioning them relatively to the other webs, depending on the particular product desired.
This may be effected. in various ways. rertain of which are shown in the drawings. In the preferred construction and as illustrated in Figs. 1 to t. the webs are led for reversal past or beyond a right angle folder over a guide roll and then over a turning bar back to thefolder, and this construction will first be described.
In this arrangement there is provided :1
folder arranged at one side of the press, that is, at right angles to the run of the product through the machine, and this folder may include a pair of superposed formers 25 and 26, to either or both of which the product may run, this construction being illustrated in Fig. 2 guide rolls 26 being provided for effecting this.
The reversing and turning guides include angle bars. one of these angle bars beingprovided for earh of the webs and six such bars being shown marked 21 28. 29. 3U, 31 and 32. These angle bars are made reversible so as to guide the webs in different ways depending on the particular arrangement of color and black pages desired in the filial product.
Guide rolls are provided over which the webs may be led past or beyond the folder for reversal, snrh rolls being nnrked 33, 34, 35 and 36, 360, 361. one of these rolls be ing provided for each anglibar. These rolls are preferably mounted so that they may be moved to different positions, illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. l.
The guides for each of the webs, therefore, include angle 1 rs and a movable guide roll, this guidiroll oeing movable so that a web may be led to its particular bar from abovoorl'ielow, In the preferred ronslrurtion and where a right angled former is used, these guides are preferably arranged in offset relation to each other, as shown in Fig. 2. so that the webs next the foldenmay go to the folder without having to run through or between the webs on the off side of the folder.
The web guides for effecting the objects of the invention will also incluue other additional guides arranged beyond the guide rolls provided for each of the angle bars so that certain of the webs may be guided around webs going over these rolls and placed in between other webs as desired, and a pair of these rolls marked 400, 401 are shown (see particularly Fig. l) for effecting this, over which the webs may be directed in either direction, depending on the combination desired.
An explanation of a web run for producing the product shown in Fig. 4 will suffice for an understanding of the invention.
The web W is led over suitable guides 40 to printing couple 4, by which it is printed on one side in black, and is printed on the other side in four colors by printing couples (5, 7 and 5 whence it is led in the slitter l.
\Veb VV' is led over suitable guides 41 to printing couples 1H and 9, by which the web is printed and perfected in black and then led to the slitter 22.
Web W is led over suitable guides l. to couple 3 by which it is printed on one side in black and then to and through couples 2,
the folder.
1, l2 and 11, by which it is printed on the are first iun over other side slitter 23.
In the partirulur run illustrated, web \V is di\'ided by the slitter 21 into \Hbs it and F. The web ll has color pages 1 and 21 on one sideand blur-h pages :3 and 23 on the other. and the web F has color pages o and 19 on one side and blark pages 5 and 2t on the other.
'eb ll" is slit by the slittrr :21! into webs R and F", and both these webs have black pages on each side, the pages in the partieular run illustrated being 8 and 22, at. 21 on web R and pages in four rolors a d then led to 4, l6 and 8, 17 on web \Veb m is divided by the slitter 23 into webs R and F \Veb R has black pages 9, 16 on one side and color pages It) and 15 on the other, and web F has blank pages it. 14 on one side and color pages 12, 13 on the other.
To produre the particular product illustrated, web R is run over suitabh guides 45 to and around roll 33 past; or beyond the folder, then back over angle bar 2? so as in bring the rolor pages 1, 24 on top. As the next two ages 3, 4, 2t, 22 are to be black, one half 2 of the blarlc web W. \YlllCll black on both. sides, i run over the long path over the outer guide roll 41H) to and over angle bar 28 and out to the folder, Wt'l) R being thrn positioned brtuevn webs t and F. As the next two pugs-s 5, 2') are to be black followed by color pages (5, it, the other half F of web W is run down over guide rolls it), and turned oYcr angle llZll. 29 and led direct to the folder, thus bringing the blaok pages of this web in the desired relation. As the next pages 7, lb and 8. 17 are to be in black the other half, I of web W is run down over guide rolls 1? and turned over angle bar 30 and out. to The next pages 9. it being in black and it). 15 being in color. one half R of 1-1) "N is led to and turned over bar I3 and then soul dirert to the folder while the other half i is guided around guide rolls 4-8 to reversing roll tau out past or bryond the folder, and than bar-l: lur' reri'rsal over bar 32 and then to the folder.
It will be apparent that by reversing the angle bars and changing the run of the webs so that the black is led in at other points a wide variety of sot-rial mnihinations of black and'rolor may be obtained.
In l igs. 4 and 5 there has been il'ustratrd certain modifications of the arrangement of the bars and rolls by whirh the sumo prodnets may be obtained and which undrr rm tain oircumstanres may be employed. Fig.

Referring to Fig. 4, the webs l'or reversal 5 a run with a straight line the angle bars and then away from the folder and around the rolls for reversal and then back to the folder. lhe roll in this particular instance and the bars would be in the same vertiral plane, with the rolls [or giving the longer path to the web arranged outside, as shown at the left in the ligurr.
in liig. 5 is illustra rd a run whereby the desired combinations may be elfeeted with a straight line folder. \Vhon this run is employed there will be provided two angle bars 5U, 51, for each ueb or half web, the web turning over angle bar 50 and then to tile reversing roll and then back over angle bar 51 and then out. to the former.
All the webs may be associated superposed at either of the formers 25, 26, the guide rolls 26 being arranged and provided for effecting this, this arrangement producing the product illustrated in Fig. 4. It will, however, be understood that where certain produrts, as all black products, for instance, are being produced, part of the webs may be ledto one former and part to the other.
While the preferred arrangement of the parts has been illustrated, it will be nnderstood that the invention is not to be restrirtwl to the partirular runs shown and drsrrlbcd, nor to the partirular product product-d. but that. a wide range of products may be effected and the runs may be arranged in various ways for elleeting the produrtion of the desired products.
