July 15 1924.
E. E. CULLEN TRIPLE JAWED WRENCH ATTACHMENT FOR HAMMERS Filed May 29, 1922 mlonioi lemfsnf (k440i Ji QM Patented July 15, 1924.
ire er ERNEST E. cnrtnlv, or NEW BALTIMORE, MICHIGAN, nssrenon or ONE-HALF T enoner. n. vnnnrnn, or FAIR HAVEN, MICHIGAN.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ERNEST E. CULLEN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New Baltimore, county of Macomb, and
State of Michigan, have invented a new and plpe-gripping wrench of convenient size and compact construction that can be readily kept in a small drawer, tool kit, etc., and
which is arranged to be quickly mounted on to the head or claw of an ordinary hammer or like tool when desired for use.
Anotherobj ectof my invention is the provision of a wrench attachment having three jaws arranged with teeth inclined to bite into the periphery of a pipe when pressure is applied to the handle of the hammer to which the jaw member is attached.
The above andother objects of my inven tion will be apparent from the following description wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention, and wherein similar reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my triplejawed wrench attachment mounted over the claw portion of an ordinary hammer in position for use in turning pipes or the like; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the wrench attachment.
Referring now to the drawings my improved wrench attachment is shown as formed with a V-shaped body portion 5 having teeth 6 on its opposite jaws to grip the rounded surface of a pipe or coupling which it is desired to turn. The teeth 6 are preferably so inclined that the dentations will bite into the opposite sides of the pipe surface when the body portion 5 is rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l, which is the natural direction of rotation for the majority of persons who are righthanded in their actions. It will be understood, however, that the teeth 6 on the jaws of the body member 5 may be inclined in the opposite direction if desired. A third jaw? having TRIPLE-JAWED wnnncn ATTACHMENT non HAMMER-S;

ed surface of the pipe or the like, is con-" nected with one extremity of the V-shaped body member 5. As herein shown the jaw member 7 is formed as a U-shaped yoke apertured at its free ends and of suflicient width to pass over the edges of the body member 5 so thatthe apertures therein will aline with an aperture in one extremity of the V-shaped member 5. The alined apertures in the members 5 and 7 receive the ends of a link 9, which secures the jaw members in position and also forms the means whereby my upon the head or claw of an ordinary hammer or like tool. Thus in Fig. I the link 9 is shown in position over the claw of a ham mer 10, the'bightportion of, the link seatlng 1n the crotch between the claw portion this position the jaw member 7 is adapted to lie flat against the forward extremity of the hammer head, and the V-shaped body member 5 may be swung on the pivot portion of the link 9 so as to encircle pipes or couplings of different diameters. Thus a' large pipe would be encircled by moving the free end of the body portion 5 away from the jaw member 7 to enlarge the space between tlze smaller pipe would be gripped by reducing the space between the teeth on the several jaws by swinging the free end of the body portion 5 toward the member 7 until the teeth on all three jaws are in engagement with the surface of the pipe. To permit gripping relatively small pipes the opening in the U-shaped jaw member 7 is of sufficient width to permit the free end of the body member 5 to pass therethrough.
In operation my improved wrench attachment is secured upon the head or claw portion of a hammer by passing the link 9 thereover, substantially as shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the V-shaped body member is swung into open position and passed around a pipe, coupling, nut, or the like, and then swung toward the jaw member 7 until the teeth 6 and 8 on the several jaw members engage the pipe surface. By then rotating the hammer head in the desired direction the pipe or nut may be unscrewed or turned into position. The leverage given by the leng h at th hammer handle i l e y wrench attachment may be quickly mounted sufiicie-nt to tighten or release all the usual sizes of pipes or nuts in common use. It will be understood that if the pipe or nut is to be rotated in one direction the claw portion of the hammer is arrangedat theright-hand side of the ,pipeornut, and if. the pipe or nut is to be rotated in the opposite direction, the claw portion of the hammer is arranged at the left-hand side thereof." With this reverse arrangement of.- the Wrench attachment the teeth. on the several jaws will all engage the surface of the: pipe or nut and give a powerful gripping surface. 1
VVhileit, willbe trated embodiment of my inventionhereindisclosed is well calculated to adequately fulfill the objects and advantagestprimarily stated, it isto be understood that the invention' is susceptible to variation, modification, andchange Within the spirit and sage of the subjoined claims. t
aving described my invention, I claim: o t.
1. A wrench attachment for hammers and the like, having a link adapted to be removably secured upon a hammer head,- a jaw portion pivotally mounted upon the link and adapted to rest against the forward extremity of the hammer head, and i a V-shaped body portion pivoted upon the apparent that the illushand.

2. A wrench attachment for hammers and the like, having a link'adapted to be r'emovab'ly secured upon a hammer head, a jaw portion pivotally mounted upon the "link and adapted to rest against the forward extremity of the hammer head, and a V-shaped body portion pivoted upon the link and movable relatively to said aw portion, saidjaw-portion and body portion being provided with teeth inclined to bite into' the surface ofva pipe when the hammer head is rotated.
3. A wrench attachment for hammers and the like, having a link adapted to be removably secured upon a hammer heath-aw U-shap d jaw portion pivoted upo the at one extremity upo th li k the,
link, and a V-shaped body member pivoted legs of the U-shaped member, the other eX-- tremity ofsaid V-shaped member being adapted to pass between the legs of the U- shaped member. I r
In witness whereof I hereunto set my D a H ERNEST E. CULLEN.
