- This invention relates to many conventional road maintainer machines, tractors, rollers, and others. It is desirable to have a relatively narrow maintainer blade, carried by the machine, pass over the surface of the ground or road, scraping off surface irregularities thereon, the dirt or other material so scraped sliding or dribbling over the top of the maintainer blade back onto the road itself. When, as shown inthe drawings, the device is applied to a roller, the dirt is subsequently pressed down into place by the roller. In such work, it is also desirable to have a substantially higher blade which may and may not cut the surface of the road for scraping substantial quantities of dirt on the surface of the road to the side thereof, or from the side to the center of the road, dependin whether the particular machine is engagedY in flattening or crowning the road.

Bm'rrr, a citizen of the United States, residingat Flossmoor, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination `Grader-Maintainer Blades. for Road Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to many conventional road maintainer machines, tractors, rollers, and others. it is desirable to have a relatively narrow maintainer blade, carried by the machine, pass over the surface of the ground or road, scraping off surface irregularities thereon, the dirt or other material so scraped sliding or dribbling over the top of the maintainer blade back onto the road itself. When, as shown inthe drawings, the device is applied to a roller, the dirt is subsequently pressed down into place by the roller. In such work, it is also desirable to have a substantially higher blade which may and may not cut the surface of the road for scraping substantial quantities of dirt on the surface of the road to the side thereof, or from the side to the center of the road, dependin whether the particular machine is engagedY in flattening or crowning the road. The object of this invention is to provide a sin le blade mechanism which can be collapse to a height suitable for such maintamer use or expanded to full height for such scraper use and which can be adjusted to various predetermined, angular positions between said two extreme positions, thereby, in the construction of a given road machine', doing away with the expense of providing two separate and distinct blades for the two purposes.
The invention consists in mechanism capable of attaining the foregoing and other objects, which can be comparatively easily and cheaply made, which is satisfactory in use and is not readily liable to get out of It further consists in numerous features and details of construction which will be hereafter more fully set forth in the speci-v` Application led July 2,-

Figure 4 is an enlarged rear view taken from the right hand 'side of Figure 3, the hinge mechanism 53 The roller maintainer mechanism, to which this invention is here shown'- applied, comprises an engine carrying body mechanism 10,-sustained on rear wheels 12 and a front wheel 14 about whichis arranged in front of the machine a plurality of runners 16 carrying at their front ends brackets 18 to which the working blade 20 is attached by any suitable means not entering into this invention. The lower-blade 20 here shown as a metallic right-angled member, with or without a separate, sharpened cutting member 22, detachably secured in place by bolts` 24, has its upper iiange 26 resting on brackets 18. The upper section of the complete blade mechanism of this invention is an elongated board or plate 32, arranged above and parallel with t e upper ed e -of blade 20, as shown in the drawmgs, t e blade 20 and the plate 32 being pivotally secured together by a plurality o hin es 34,: each having one lea 35 securedto t e flange 26 by an suitable` means, as rivets 36, while the otlier leaf 37 is secured to the plate 32 by any suitable means, such as rivets 38. Loosely and pivotally mounted near the outer or free swinging edge of the plate 32 on or adjacent to each hinge, specicall in a hook 40 on the adjacent hinge leaf 3 is a brace or locking rod `42, having a horizontally turned end 44 adapted to be selectively inserted indifferent ones of a plurality of laterally spaced holes 45-46-47 in a lu 48 rising from the adjacent lower hinge lea lVith the mechanism just described, the operator can assemble the device as shown in Figure 3 with the member 44 in holel 46 with the result that the blade 20 and the plate 32 make a combined scraper blade having a slight angularity or curvature on its working face. From the foregoin it will 'be seen that by the use of the prmciples of this invention, the plate 32 may be in its operation rendered adjustable to anyangular position desired above the blade 20.

The result of the construction shown in Figure 2 is that' the .operator ca'n lengthen or A shorten the mainblade mechanism and sesired positions by .shifting the member all into the various holes i5-47.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new' and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is;
1. In mechanism of the class described,

In mechanism of the class described, an angle member having one flange face substantially vertical, forming an earth working element, the other iange being at the top and approximately horizontal, a plurality of hinges along the top lian e, an earth working plate, normally para lel to the first face of the angle carried by said hinges and brace rods carried by thev swinging plate adjacent to the hinges selectively interlockable in holes repared for it at different points on the lliinge part which is attached to the angle member, for the purposes set forth.
