Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the base of the machine upon which is a head 2 provided with bearings in which is rotatably mounted a horizontal shaft 3. Fixed to the shaft 3 at its right-hand end (Fig. 1) is a gearwheel 4, meshing with a second gear-wheel 5, by which it is driven. The second gearwheel 5 is rotatably and slidably mounted on a shaft 6 rotatably mounted in a bearing 7 formed onthe head 2. The shaft 6 is prevented from moving endwise in its bearing by a washer 8 and screw 9 at one end and by a driving pulley 10 fixed to its opposite end and provided with an internally coned face 11. A member 12 fixed to the gear wheel 5 so as to rotate and slide therewith on the shaft 6 has an external coned face 13 formed upon it. The coned faces are forced into engagement when the machine is being operated by a slide 14 having slots 15, 16 (see Fig. 4), through which pass respectively the shafts 3 and 6, the slide being thereby guided and being free to have vertical movement relatively to the shafts. The slide has formed on it an inclined face 17 which engages a similarly inclined face on a xed col-lar 18. The opposite face of r the slide 14 bears against a face on the gearits lower end to one arm of a bell-crank lever 23 loosely mounted on a shaft 24 fixed by a set-screw 25 Fig. 2) in bearings formed in the legs 1. The bell-crank lever 23 is prevented from moving along the shaft by collars 26, 27 pinned to the shaft. The other arm of the bell-crank lever 23 is connected by a link 28 (Fig. 1) to an arm 29 of a treadle lever 30, loosely mounted on a shaft 31 xed by a set screw 32 (Fig. 2) in bearings in the legs 1, the treadle lever being prevented from moving endwise of the shaft by collars 33, 33 pinned to the shaft, the treadle being raised by a suitable spring 34. As illustrated in the drawings, the machine, 0n depression of the starting treadle, will perform one complete operation and then be automatically stopped; but, as will hereinafter appear, the arrangement may be such that the machine will be operated continuously so long as the starting treadle is depressed. A pin 35 (Fig. 4) removably mounted in the gear-wheel 4, is arranged to engage, towards the end of one revolution of the gear-wheel, the upper end of the detent 19 and turn the detent about its pivot vthereby disengaging the shoulder 22 from the slide 14 and allowing `the slide, which has previously been lifted by the detent, to be pulled down by a spring 36 attached at one end to a hook 37 in the slide and at the other end to a pin 38 projecting from a part of the head. Descent of the slide 14 permits the coned faces 11 and 13 to be separated by springs 200 (Fig. 1) carried in bosses on the pulley and bearing on a circular ring plate 201 supported on pins 202 slidingly mounted in bosses on the pulley, the plate bearing against a face of the member 12.
To operate the machine again, the treadle must be allowed to rise and the detent 19 will be disengaged from the pin 35 and the shoulder 22 returned to position beneath the slide 14 by a spring 39 fastened at one end to the forked end of the treadle rod and having its opposite end bearing against the detent.
Vhen it is desired that the machine shall operate without stopping after each cycle, the pin 35 is removed from the gear-wheel 4 and the detent will then not be turned on its pivot and the machine will continue to operate as long as vthe operator continues to press on the treadle.
Fixed to the left hand end (Fig. 1) of the shaft 3 is a crank disc 40 having a crank pin 41 connected by a link 42 to a pin 43 mounted on a knife-carrying slide 44. The knife slide has formed upon it tongues 45 (Fig. 3) which slide in vertical grooves formed in an overhanging forwardly extending part of the head 2. A breasting knife 46 is clamped by bolts 47 in a recess in the knife slide 44 and the knife is` arranged to be adjusted vertically on the slide Y by two set screws 48 (Fig. 2) held in adjusted position by lock-nuts 49. Also mounted in the knifefslide 44 is a plunger 50 arranged to slide vertically therein, and a friction pawl 51 (Fig. l) is pivotedin the slide and is pressed by a spring plunger V52 into engagement with the plunger 50, the
arrangement being such that during the descent of the knife and justbefore it reaches the heel, the plunger 50`will engage the seat face of the heel and will hold the heel vin position during the breasting operation and the friction device will cause the plunger to exert pressure on the heel during the continued downward movement of the knife slide. As soon as the knife slide commences its upward movement the plunger 50 will be raised thereby freeing the breasted heel for ejection from the machine, and the plunger will continue to rise until its upper end engages a stop plate 53, fixed by screws 54 to the head of the machine, when the friction device will allow the head to continue its upward movement and the plunger will resume its normal position when the machine stops.
The knife slide 44 is provided with a bearing for a second vertical plunger (Fig. 2) which reciprocates with the knife slide and is controlled b-y a friction device, which, in the embodiment herein shown and described, comprises a knurled-headed screw .56 and a friction pad 57 which is pressed by the screw 56 into frictional engagement with the plunger 55. This plunger during the descent of the knife slide engages a feed mechanism locking device, to be described hereinafter, and on the upward movement of the knife slide the plunger is immediately withdrawn from the locking device and rises with the knife slide until the upper end of the plunger engages the stop plate '53, when the plunger is stopped in its upward movement while the knife slide continues its movement into stopping position.
A heel feeding mechanism is carried upon a bed 58 pivoted at 59 to a forwardly extending portion of the head 2. The bed 58 has a downwardly extending arm 60 in which is a curved slot 61. 'A bolt 62 passing through the slot and screwed into the head 2 serves to lock the bed in adjusted position. Graduations on the arm and a pointer 63 fastened by screws 64 to the head, indicate the angular position of the bed. This angular adjustment permits the cutting of heel breasts at different angles. Sliding in suitable guideways in the bed 58 is a feed slide 65, Figs. 5 and 6. A plate 66 fastened by screws 67 to the under side of the feed slide supports the heel during its feeding movement and during the breasting operation. Carried by the members 71, 72 at their rightvhand ends, Fig. 5, are cam rolls 75 mounted on a pin 7 6. The cam rolls during the feeding of a heel into breasting position travel along cam slots 77 formed in walls 78, 79 on the under side of the bed 58. rlhe members 71, 72 at their left hand ends, Fig. 5, are supported by a pin 203 passing through them and extending into parallel slots formed in the walls 78, 79. Between these walls and the members 71, 72 are springs 80, 81, which hold the members in frictional contact with a member 82, situated between the members and rotatably mounted on the pin 203. The member 82 has two lugs 83, 84 between which is positioned a pin 85 fixed in a boss on the feed slide 65. Then the feed slide is moved along the bed to'feed a heel into breasting' position, the pin 85 bears againstthe lug 83 and owing to the friction between the member 82 and the members 71, 72, the members are moved with the slide. During this movement the cam rolls travel along the cam slots and are withdrawn downwardly from in front of the heel breast. When the rolls arrive at the end of the cam slots the feed slide will not have reached the heel-breasting position, and when the movement of the breast-positioning members is thus stopped by the slots, the member 82 will turn about the pin 203, and allow the pin to continue its movement with the slide. Upon the return movement of the slide the pin 85 will engage the lug 84 of the member 82 and will first turn it about the pin 203 until faces 86 on the member 821 engage lugs 87 on the members 71, 72 thereupon the members 71,v 72 will be returned with the slide 65 and the heel breast engaging portions 73, 74 will be raised through the slots in the slide into position to receive another unn breasted heel.
Pivoted on studs 88, 89 (Figs. -5` and 6) screwed into the under side of the slide 65 are levers 90, 91 having formed thereon gear segments 92, 93 engaged by a right and left hand threaded screw 94, by the rota` tion of which the levers 90, 91 may be adjusted about their pivots. The screw 94 is supported in bearings, formed on the slide 65, between which is a knurled hand wheel 95, pinned to the screw 94 by which the screw may be rotated and which prevents the screw from moving endwise in its bearings. e to' the ends of short shafts 112 rotatably mounted in the ends of arms 114, 115 (see Fig. 2) of a U-shaped lever 116 pivoted on a shaft 117 mounted in a bearing on the head 2. The short shafts 112 are held in the levers by screws, one of which is shown at 118 (Fig. 1), having reduced ends entering grooves formed in the shafts 112. The arm 114 of the lever 116 has between its pivot and its short shaft 112 a boss in l which is a plunger 119 and a spring 120 which allows the plunger to yield in one direction. A nut 121 on the plunger positions it in the boss. The enlarged end of the plunger has formed in it a conical recess, which in the normal working of the machine is entered by the conical end of a stud 122 carried in the end of a cam lever 128 pivoted upon the shaft 117. The stud 122 has upon its opposite end a cam roll 124 positioned in a cam groove 125 formed in a cam 126 fast on the shaft 8.
In the operation of the feeding mechanism the levers 98, 99 will be first closed to grip the heel and then during the continued movement of the cam lever 128 the slide'65 will be pulled along the bed 58 into heel-breasting position and on the return movement of the slide the levers 98, 99 will first be turned on their pivots to release the heel and then the slide returned to heel-receiving position.
Should the feed slide meet with an obstruction during its feeding or return movement, the spring plunger 119 in the arm 114 will yield and allow the cam lever 128 to complete its movement, thereby preventing breakage of the machine parts.
Pins 127 are provided in the levers 90, 91 to form stops for the arms 100, 101, on the return movement of the slide, and if the machine should be run without having a heel placed in the feeding mechanism.
A stop for the feed slide is provided by a member 128 (Fig. 6) pivoted at 129 to the bed 58. A spring plunger 204 bears against the member 128 and yieldingly holds the member in the path of a roll 180 mounted on the slide 65. The member 128 is limited in its movement by the spring plunger, by a tail piece 181 on the member engaging a face on t-he bed 58. The roll 180 travels over a face 182 of the member until the roll meets a second face 188 of a projection 184 which acts as a stop for the slide and locks it in one direction during the breasting operation. A stop is provided to prevent the slide 65 from moving in the opposite direction during the breasting opu eration. A lever 185 (Fig. 5) is pivoted at 186 in lugs on the bed 58, and has a projecting portion 187 which when the lever is depressed enters a recess 188 (F ig. 6) in the slide 65 and holds Athe slide from movement away from its breasting position. A spring 189 raises the lever to disconnect the projecting portion and recess. The lever is depressed to lock the slide 65 after the slide has been moved into breasting position by the beforementioned plunger 55, mounted in the knife slide 44, as soon as the knife slide begins to descend and is released as soon as the knife slide commences to ascend.
Supported by the pivot 59 of the bed 58 is a cutting block 142 made of wood or some hard substance, having a number of cutting surfaces. When a cutting surface becomes worn out, the block may be turned on the pivot 59 to present a new cutting surface, and when all the cutting surfaces become worn the block may be renewed.
The machine is so timed that just before the knife finishes its cutting movement, the heel-clamping arms are opened and when the feed slide returns the heel drops down a chute 140 and the severed material down al second chute 14.1, the chutes being secured by screws to the legs 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine for breasting unattached heels, the combination of a breasting knife, a cutting block relatively to which the knife is moved to breast the heel, a carrier constructed and arranged to support and locate the heel in predetermined position, and means for moving the carrier to cause the breast end of the heel to be presented over the cutting block.
2. In a machine for breasting unattached heels, the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block relatively to which the knife is moved to breast the heel, a carrier for the heel, means on the carrier to locate the heel in predetermined position, and means constructed and arranged to operate the carrier to cause the breast end only of the heel to be presented over the cutting block.
8. In a machine for breasting heels, the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support the heel for the action of the knife, a carrier movable toward and from the block ar ranged to receive a heel when in a position lll() away from the block and when in another position to present the heel with its breast end resting on the blocky in position to be breasted, means for holding the heel on the carrier, and power opei'ated connections for first actuating the holding meansv and then moving the carrier to present the heel in breasting position.

In a machine for breasting heels, the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support the heel for the action of the knife, a reciprocating carrier movable toward and` from the block arranged to receive a heel when in a position away from the block and when in another position to present the heel with its breast end resting on the block in position to be breasted,- and power means for operating the carrier and knife in timed relation to present the heel in breasting position and then breast the heel.
5. In a machine for breasting heels, the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support the heel for the action of the knife, a carrier slide arranged' to reciprocate toward and from the blockand adapted to receive a heel when in a position away from the block and when in another position to present the heel with its breast end resting on the block in position to be breasted, means for positioning and holding the heel on the carrier, and power means for operating the carrier and knife in timedV relation to present thel heel in breasting position and then breast the heel.
6. In a machine of the class described, the con'ibination of a knife slide carrying a knife and a heel carrying slide arranged for reciprocation in directions substantially at right angles to each other, and means constructed and arranged to enable the said angle to be varied by relative movement of the slides about an axis lying in the plane of the cutting stroke lof the knife.
7. 15. In a machine for breasting heels7 the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support the heel for the action of the knife, a heel carrier, means to position the breast edge of the heel breast on the carrier, and means to move the vpositioning means out of operaf tive position constructed and arranged to permit movement of the carrier while the positioningvmeans remains at rest to enable the carrier in its movement to present the breast end of theheel on the block.
16. In a machine for breasting heels, the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support a heel for the action of the knife, a reciprocating carrier movable bodily toward and yfrom the block, means yon the carrier to locate the heel in predetermined relation to the carrier, and means for locking the carrier against movement during the operation of the knife.
17. In a machine for breasting heels, the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, ak stationary cutting block to support a heel for the action of the knife, ar reciprocating carrier movable bodily toward and from the block, means on the carrier to lo cate the heel in predetermined relation to the carrier, means to limit movement of the carrier to posit-ion the heel on the block, and means for locking the carrier against movement during the operation of the knife.
18. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a-l reciprocating knife slide, la reciprocating heel slide, a member adapted to engage the heel'slide and lock it in position adjacent to the knife, and a friction plunger on the knife slide arranged to operate the locking member to lock the slide during the operating stroke of the knife and to release the member early in its return stroke.
19. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a reciprocating knife slide, a reciprocating heel slide, a depressible member adapted to engage the heel slide and lock it in position adjacent to the knife, and a friction plunger on the knife slide arranged to depress the depressible member and lock the slide during a substantial portion of the operating stroke of the knife and to release the depressible member early in its return stroke.
20. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a reciprocating knife slide, a reciprocating heel slide, locking means for the heel slide, and frictional means on the knife slide for operating the locking means.
21. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a reciprocating knife slide, a reciprocating heel slide, locking means for the heel slide, and friction means on the knife slide operating to hold the locking means in engagement with the slide during operation of the knife and to release the locking means as soon as the knife begins its return stroke.
22. In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting means, a slide movable toward and from the breasting means on which slide a heel is placed to be fed, a pair of jaws on the slide arranged to engage opposite sides of a heel, and a single means acting first to close the jaws upon the heel and then acting to move the slide to carry the heel into breasting position.
23. In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting means, a slide movable toward and from the breasting means on which a heel is placed while the slide is remote from the breasting means, a pair of jaws on the slide arranged to engage opposite sides of a heel, and power means acting upon the jaws first to close the jaws upon the heel and then acting to move the slide to carry the heel into operative relation to the breasting means.
24. In a machine for breasting heels, .the combination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support a heel for the action of the knife, a carrier movable to present the heel with its breast end rest-ing on the block in position to be breasted, jaws on the carrier, and operating means acting first to close the jaws upon the heel and then to move the heel to present the heel in breasting position.
25. In a machine for breasting heels, the
ycombination of a reciprocating breasting knife, a stationary cutting block to support the heel for the action of the knife, a carrier movable toward and from the block arranged to receive a heel when in a position away from the block and when in another position to present the heel with its breast end resting on the block in position to be breasted, jaws on the carrier acting on the side of the heel adjacent to its breast end, and operatingV means acting first to close the jaws upon the'heel and then acting to move the heel to present the heel in breasting position.
26. In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting means, a slide to which the heel is fed toplift down, means for locating the heel longitudinally and laterally on the slide, a pair of jaws arranged to engage the toplift on opposite sides adjacent to itsbreast, and means for reciprooating'the slide, said means acting first to close the jaws and then to move the slide to carry the heel to breasting position.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting means, a slide on which the heel is placed, while the slide is remote from the breasting means, means for locating the heel longitudinally and Vlaterally on the slide by engagement with the toplift only, a pair of jaws arranged to engage the toplift only on opprosite sides adjacent to its breast, and means for reciprocating the slide, said means acting first to close the kjaws and then to move the slide to carry the heel to breasting position.
28. In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting means, a slide movable toward and from the breasting means, a pair of jaws on the slide having a normally open position to receive the heel between them, means `,acting first toclose the jaws upon the heel and then acting t-o move the slide to carry the heel to breasting position, and means for simultaneously varying the normal position of the jaws to receive wide and narrow heels without disturb-ing the means for moving the slide toward the breasting means.
29. In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting` means, a. slide movable toward and from the'breasting means, a pair of levers on the slide, a jaw on each of the levers, said jaws having ,-a normally open position to receive the heel between them, means acting first to Vclose the jaws upon vthe heel and then acting to move the slide to carry the heel to breasting position, and means for moving the aws equally` and oppositeiy to enable the jaws to receive wide and narrow heels without disturbing the means for moving the slide toward the breasting means.
30. In a machine of the class described,
the combination of a breasting knife, a. cut- Y ting block, means for presenting a heel to the block, and means for relatively operating the knife and block to breast the heel, the cutting block being in the shape of an voctagonal prism mounted for rotation to enable any rectangular face of the block to be presented for the action of the knife.

In a machine of the class described, the Vcombination of a breasting knife, a cutting block with which the knife co-operates to breast a heel, and means for relatively operating the knife and block to breast the heel, the cutting block Vbeing polygonal in shape and 4mounted for rotation to enable the various sides of the block vto be presented for the action of the knife.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a reciprocating knife, a cuttingl block coeXtensive with the knife edge and of small extent perpendicularly to the plane of the knife, and means for presenting and holding a heel with its breast end on the cutting block for the operation of the knife, said means releasing the heel after the operation of the knife to allow the heel to fall on one side of the block and the chip to fall on the other sidefof the block.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of a reciprocating knife, a cutting block, and means for presenting and holding a heel with its breast end on the cutting block for the operation of the knife, said means releasing the heel after the operation of the knife to allow the heel to fall.

combination of a breasting knife, a carrier forpresenting the heel to the knife, means i arranged to gia-gethe `position of the heel breast relatively to the carrier, and means for moving the gaging means heightwise of the heel out of operative position during movement 'of thecarrier toward the knife.

In a machine for breasting heels, a breasting knife and a heel support relatively operated to breast a heel, heel transferring` means for presenting a heel breast-forward in breasting position on the support, and means engaging the heelbreast during transfer of the heel at two points only adjacen to the ends of the breast face for alining the heel breast With the breasting knife prior to the relative operation of the knife and support to breast the heel.

In a machine. for breasting unattached heels, the combination of breasting means, power means for transferring a heel breastforward from feeding position to breasting position, means for locating the heel breast relatively to the breasting means, and means for removing the locating means from operative position by movement rearwardly of the heel prior to operation of the breasting means.

In a machine of the class described, reciprocating breasting means, a heel clamp arranged tc be carried toward the heel by the breasting means and to slide relatively thereto, a pivoted member inclined to the direction of movement of the clamp and arranged to bear at its free end against the sliding clamp, and a spring to hold the member frictionally against the sliding clamp, the frictional resistance to relative movement between the clamp and member being greater in one direction than the other.

In a machine of the class described, reciprocating breasting means, a heel clamp arranged to be carried toward the heel by the breasting means and to slide relative-ly thereto, a pivoted member arranged at an oblique angle to the direction of movement of the sliding clamp and having its end beveled to bear against the sliding clamp, and 'resilient means to hold the member frictionally against the sliding clamp.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of heel breasting means, a heel carrierv movable toward the breasting means, a pair of jaws arranged for equal and opposite movement to engage the sides of the heel to center it With respect to the breasting means, and means common to the jaws and the carrier for actuating them.

In a heel breasting machine, heel breasting' means, and heel transferring and positioning means movable With the heel including means engaging the sides of the heel adjacent to the breast and engaging the opposite ends of the heel to locate the heel longitudinally and transversely With respect to the breasting means.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of breasting means, a stationary support to sustain the heel for the operation of the breasting means, heel t'rans ferring means acting to move the heel from a position remote from the breasting means into position on the support in operative relation to the breasting means, and heel locating means acting by equal and opposite movement against the'sides of the front portion of the heel to locate the heel laterally, and means movable with the heel and engaging the ends only of the heel breast to locate the heel longitudinally.
