Be it known that I, CURTIS E. BnADBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Finney and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Hair Curler, of which the following be wrapped, and securelyyheld, means being 7 provided whereby the hair retainingportion of the device can be folded tightly onto the hair and be easily fastened.

' A further object is to provide fastening means of novel form for retaining the hair gripping members in proper relation to each other after the hair has been wrapped.

With the foregoing and other objects in .view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction, hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from thespirit of the invention.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged Section on line 4-4, Fig. 3. r Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the tubular body of the device open at both ends, one end portion of the body being cut away to provide a segmental extension 2 having terminal shoulders 3. Straddling this extension 2 is a yoke 4, the ends of which engage the ends of a cross pin 5 extended across the end of the tube 1. Pin 5 is engaged between its ends by the hookedv end 6 of a leaf spring 7 the other end of this leaf spring being riveted or otherwise fastened in the tube 1 as shown at 8.

Pivotally mounted on the end portions of the pin 5 are ears 9' extending from the sides of the gripping strip or tongue 10. This tongue isbowed transversely as shown in Fig.4 and is so proportioned as to normally extend longitudinally of and rest upon the tubular member 1. The spring 7 and the pm 5 carried thereby constitute a resilient floating connection for the tongue 10.

That end of the tongue '10 remote from the ears 9 has anangular finger 11 projecting therefrom and adapted to be inserted through a-slot 12 extending into the tubular member 1 from one end. Slidably mounted within this slotted end of the tubular member is a tubular plug 13 having a slot 14 therein. A retaining pin 15 extends diametrically through the member 1 and through opposed slots 16in the plug 13 so that said plug has a limited sliding movement in the member 1.

' Aring 17 is pivotally mounted within the projecting end of the plug 13 and is adapted to be engaged by a hook 18 provided at one end of an elastic strip 19 the other end of which engages the bail or yoke 4 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

When it is desired to'use this device the hook 18 is disengaged from the ring 17 so that the elastic strip 19 can hang from the yoke 4 as shown inFig. 1. The finger 11, which is normally seated in the plug 13, as shown in Fig. 2, is released by pulling the plug outwardly and allowing the finger to swing outwardly through the slots 14 and 12. Thus tongue 10 can swing downwardly away from the tube 1 after which the hair can be wrapped about the tubel. Tongue 10 is then swung into position across the wrapped portion. of the hair so that finger 11 will enter the slots 14 and 12. During this placing of the tongue the floating pin 5 constituting the pivot of the tongue will shift laterally relative to the member 1 so the hairs are wrapped about'the tubular member 1 and the tongue 10 and fastened in place by stretching the strip 19 and placing hook 18 into engagement with ring 17. Thus the ends of the hair will be held and at the same time the plug 13 will be retained in fastening position.

What is claimed is 1. A. hair curler including a body portion, a tongue adapted to straddle the same and to extend longitudinally thereof, a floating pivotal connection between one end of the tongue and the body, a fastening member movably engaging the body for detachably engaging the tongue, and resilient hair retaining means for holding the fastening member yieldingly in engaging positlon.

2. A hair curler including a body portion, a hair retaining tongue adapted to extend longitudinally thereof, afloating pivotal connection between the tongue and body portion, cooperating means upon the tongue and body portion for fastening the tongue against movement relative to the body portion, and elastic,supplemental hair retaining means. 7 I

4. A hair curler including a body portion, a hair retaining tongue, .a resilient tion, an angular projection at one end of the tongue insertible into the. body portion,

a locking member slidable within the. body portion to engage and release said angular projection, a yoke carried by the floating connection, and elastic, hair retaining means connected to the yoke and locking member, said means being detachable at one end.

A hair curler including a tubular body having a segmental extension at; one end, a spring mounted Within the body, a pivot pin carried by the spring and limited in its movement in one direction by said exten sion, a tongue pivotally mounted on the pin, a yoke. pivotally mounted on'the pin, an angular extension upon the tongue movable into the body, a fastening plug slidably mounted within the body andslotted to receive, the extension, means for limiting the movement of the plug, an elastic hair retaining strip connected to the yoke, and

means for'detachably connecting the strip tov theplug.
