. KOKOMO, INDIANA.
JEWELRY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pateg tiqgfi Jiule 2?, 1%22.
Application filed. February 9, 1321. Serial No. 443,564.
To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Gr. lVn'rznL, a resident of Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in jewelry and refers particularly to the fastening or securing means for the end of the cord or flexible medium for a string of beads, chain-links, vracelet sections, or in fact, for use in any situation where it would perform the necessary functions in a pr ctical and efiicient manner.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a securing means which can be readily applied to the ends of the flexible cord or connection and which while properly permitting access to the knotted end of the cord, will absolutely providea reliable fastening means which cannot possibly be released improperly or by accident.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a securing means of the character and for the purpose described which will be of the simplest and cheapest possible construction and which will provide an attractive and highly ornamental fastening means for articles of jewelry.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a securing means which can be instantly fitted to the ends of the cord, which will completely protect and conceal such cord ends and which generally, in every particular, will prove desirable, efiicient and highly practical.
Vith the attainment of the above stated objects in view my invention consists of a fastening or securing device of the character described embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as shown, described and particularly defined by the claims, it being understood that any changes or modification may be made in the structure as fall within the scope of the claims.
In order that the details of construction and the manner of using my fastening may be fully understood and its many advantages and points of merit be appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a con struction embodying the preferred form of my improvement, and in said drawing:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a necklace or string of beads equipped with my fastening device.
Fig. 2 represents a view partly in elevation with the fastening device shown in section to more clearly illustrate the relation of the parts of my improvement.
Fig. 3' represents an enlarged perspective view of the female member of my device.
Fig. at represents a similar perspective view of the male member of the device, and
nig. 5 represents a sectional view of the complete fastening device with the parts in assembled or fastened position.
Figa o and 7 represent detail views of modified constructions of my invention.
The fastening is particularly useful for use in connection with the stringing cord or flexible element A of a string ofbeads or like ornaments B, whose knotted ends C, must be firmly retained in the fastening medium to confine the beads or ornaments in place.
The fastening as a whole is the embodiment of simplicity, and consists of the female or conical sleeve member D, which is provided with the flaring entrance opening E and the oblong or restricted eXit opening F, the male member which cooperateswith the sleeve or female member comprising. the head G, provided with the cord receiving opening Ii having the seat or depression J to receive the knotted end C, of the cord, while extending from said head is the yoke or bail K terminating in the eye L, which receives the ring L for the attaching device carried by the other or twin fastening de vice naturally of similar construction to the fastening just described.
The manner of using the fastening is so obviously apparent from an inspection of the drawing taken with the description, that it seems unnecessary to detail in length a further statement of the manner of using, but it will be seen that the cord is passed through the opening in the head of the male member and is securely retained therein and when so located, the female member or sleeve fits over the male member and has frictional contact with the tapered edge of the head, as well as with the eye L of the bail of the male member, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
It will be evident that the fastening device will prove highly desirable for use in connection with the cord or flexible medium upon which the beads of a necklace, the
links of a chain, or the sections of a bracelet are mounted, although the device may be used for other purposes and that by reason of its ornamental character, simplicity, durability and cheapness, as well as the saving of time which its use will insure, that the device will commend itself as filling a longfclt want in an entirely satisfactory manner.
In Figures 6 and 7 are shown modified forms of my invention in which thehead may be formed with threads M to receive threads M. while in Figure 7 the head is formed with a lug N to engage a bayonet slot N, of the sleeve member.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described the combination with an ornament carrying medium, a member connected to one end of said medium and having a loop for conneetion with the other end of said medium, a member having locking engagement with said first named member and means carried by the medium to engage the first named iember to secure the parts in locked relation.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with an ornament carrying cord or medium, a male member provided with means at each end for securing the ends of said medium, a female member for concealing and locking the male member in proper position, and a ring engaging said male member to retain said member in proper relation.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flexible cord having enlarged or knotted ends, a male member having a head formed with an opening to receive and retain said knotted ends, a bail formed on said head and having an eye, and a ring or like fastening engaging said eye.
i. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flexible cord having enlarged or knotted ends, a male member having a head formed each with an opening to receive and retain said knotted ends, a bail formed on said head and having an eye, a female sleeve member fitting upon the head and bail of the male member and frie tionally engaging the said head and eye of said male member, and a ring fitting said eye.
5. A fastening device of the character described, consisting of a male member of bail shaped construction, and female member of sleeve-like form adapted to receive and secure the bail-shaped portion of the male member in proper relation each end of said male member being provided with means to receive fastenings.
6. A fastening device of the character described, consisting of a male member comprising a head provided with an opening and a bail projecting from said head and formed with an eye, and afemale member adapted to receive and cover the head and bail of the male member and to secure the projected eye in position to receive a ring or like means.
7. A fastening device of the character described, consisting of a male member having a head at one end of tapered shape and having an eye at its other end, and a tapered female member enclosing said male member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature.
