CHIMNEY BRUSH.
Application led September 21, 1923. Serial No. 663,990.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, TENNLE NELSON, a Citizen of the United Statesresiding at Kil,- bourn, in the county of Columbia and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in brushes and more particularly to that type of brush used specifically in the cleaning or sweeping of chimneys.
The primary object of my invention is to provide such a brush wherein chimneys of widely varying cross vsectional areas maybe effectively cleaned, the nature of the brush being such as to permit of its ready adjustment to suit chimneys of different cross sectional areas.
A furtherv object of this invention is the provision of such an article wherein the same comprises numerous co-related parts that lmay be disassembled for storage or transportation purposes.
A still further object is to provide such an article wherein the same may be readily adjusted by even unskilled persons.
With the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fullyvr described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my novel brush,
Figures 2, 3 and 4 are detailed sectional views taken substantially upon the lines 2 2, 3-3 and 4 4 respectively of Figure l,
Figure 5 is a perspective of one of the bristle carrying sections, and
Figure 6 is a similar view of one of the elements employed for securely maintaining the bristle carrying brush sections in adjusted positions.
With particular reference to the drawings, my novel brush comprises four bristle carrying sections designated respectively, 5, 6, 7 and 8. As more clearly shown in Figure 5 each of these bristle carrying sections em bodies a substantially L-shaped backing 9 preferably of sheet metal and having secured thereto in any manner desirable at the outer edge thereof, a similar shaped wooden strip 10 carrying preferably three rows of outwardly extending wire bristles 11.
The longer leg of the substantially L- shaped backing 9 of each bristle carrying section is formed with a longitudinal slot 12 at a point adjacent the end thereof, and 1n actualv practice the brush is assembled by placing the backings. 9 9 of the sections 5 l tive backings of the bristle carrying sections secured thereto through the medium of a bolt and nut connection. 14, it being obvious that whenever it is desired to increase the length of the brush, these connections are loosened for consequently permitting of an outward slidingmovement of the' sections 6 and 7 with respect to the sections 5 and 8, andy as soon as-the same has been extended to the desired length, the bolt and nut connections are tightened.
Each of the relatively U-shaped clamps 1? carries a pair of inwardly extending relatively elongated rods 15, the rods of one clamp being positioned in staggered relations iip with the rods of the opposite clamp as clearly shown in Figure l, these rods being positioned within channels 16 formed upon the mating faces of a pair of substantially rectangular shaped clamp boards 17 which clamp boards are formed centrally with registering openings for the reception of the lower screw-threaded end of a relatively elongated eye-bolt 1.7 upon which is threaded nuts 18 and 19 above and below the before mentioned clamp boards 17, Figure t. It will be manifest that when either one of these nuts is loosened, the sections 7 and 8 may be moved toward or away from the Sections 5 and 6 for consequently increasing the width of the brush.
From the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will at once be manifest that I have provided a highly novel and simplified form of brush specifically adapted for use in the cleaning of chimneys and one wherein the same may be adjusted as to both length and width for accommodating the same to chimneys of widely varying cross sectional, alaSf,
,5 and 6 as well as the sections 7 and 8. and
Minor changes may be, made Within the invention Without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described Lmy invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z* l. In a brush of the character described, four ysubstantiaiy L-shaped bristle carrying brushv sections originally arranged in the form of a square and having their adjacent ends in overlapping relation, means positioned directly upon adjacent ends of certain diametrically opposite ones of the overlapped ends of said bristle carrying brush sections for adjustably securing said adjacent ends together, and means carried by said first mentioned means for adjustably securing the opposite adjustably connected sect-ions together.
2. In a brus-h of the character described, four substantially L-shaped bristle carrying brush sec-tions originally arranged yin the form of a square and having their adjacent ends in overlapping relation, means positioned directly upon adjacent ends of certain diametrically opposite ones of the overy lapped ends of said'bristle carrying brush lapped ends of said bristle carrying brush sections and carrying fastening means engageable through registering slots in said ends of said bristle carrying brfush sections.
3. Ina brush of the character described, four substantially L-shaped bristle carrying brush sec-tions originally arranged in the form of a square and having their adjacent ends in overlapping relation, means positioned directly upon adjacent ends of certain diametrically opposite ones of the/,overlapped ends of said bristle carrying brush sections for adjustably securing said adjacent ends together, means carried by said first men tioned means for adjustably securing the opposite adjustably connected sections together, said first mentioned means compris ing clamps engageable over the overlapped TENNIE NELSON.
