SEPARABLE FASTENER.
Application `led.'l'anuary V19, 1924. Serial No. 687,206.
T0 all whom t may cof/wem.'
Be it known that l, ANDREW S. Wrrwnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Separable Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates, more particularly, though not exclusively, to fasteners for releasably securing two parts together, as for example in connection with garments; and my object, generally stated, is to provide a novel, simple and inexpensive construction of fastener of the type involving a stud, or button, portion and a co-operating slotted portion, and one which may be readily manipulated to fastening position, or released from such position, and which, when in fastening position will not become accidentally released.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:-
Figure 1 is a face view of the plate section of a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure, 2 is an end view of the stud, or button, portion thereof.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the plate of Figure 1. Figure'4 is an edge view of the stud section shown in Figure 2. Figure 5 is a section taken at the line 5 on Figure 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; and Figure 6, a section taken through the plate and stud sections in assembled relation, the section being taken at a line corresponding with the line 6 on Figure 5 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
In accordance with the particular illustrated embodiment of my invention, the plate section of the fastener is formed from a single blank of sheet metal, preferably relatively springy metal, this section, shown at 7, being in the form of a circular disk with its marginal edge deflected to form an annular bead 8 at one face thereof and a registering annular' groove 9 in its opposite face, the part of the plate, deiiected to `form the bead referred to, containing sets of perforations 10 through which the thread for sewing the plate 7 in lace on the garment, extends. The plateg contains, within the confines of the bead 8, a slot 11 cornprising the relatively narrow slot portion 12 and the crosswise-extending slot portion 13 of relatively great width, at one end of the slot portion 12, the portion 13 extending beyond the slot portion 12 at both sides of the latter, as shown. The plate 7, at opposite sides of the slot portion 12, is provided with lugs 14 which may be located atv the juncture of the slot portions 12 and 13 as shown7 and extending lengthwise of the slot portion 12 and rearwardly at angles to the plane of the plate, each lug 14 resenting, at one edge, the abrupt shoulder 15 and at its opposite edge, the inclined camming surface 16, the latter inclining outwardly toward the slot portion 13 and facing the latter. Y
The plate 7 also comprises a tongue 17, the free end of which extends opposite the slot 11 and preferably slightly offset backwardly relative to the plane in which the body portion of the plate 7 extends, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The tongue 17 is preferably formed of that portion of the plate 7 which is cut away to form the slot 11 and is joined to the body of the plate by the uncut portion 18, the tongue extending between the lugs 14. .The lugs 14 are formed by cutting into the opposite edges of the tongue 17 and bending the parts thus separated from the tongue, rearwardly to the position shown and described.
The plate 7, in the particular form shown, is adapted to beA secured flatwise against the garment (not shown) in the osition in which it bears at its bead 8 against the garment.
The other, stud, section of the fastener is represented at 19 in Figs. 2, 4 and 6 and comprises the shank 2O carrying at Yits opposite ends the disks 21 and 22, each of greaterdiameter than the width of the slot portions 12, the disk 21 being shown as containing sets of perforations 23 at which it is adapted to be sewed flatwise to the garment portion to be fastened to the other garment portion to which the plate 7 is secured` the disk 22 forming the head of the stud.
The sections of the fastener are manipulated to assembled fastening position by introducing the stud 19 at its head 22 into the slot portion 13 and moving it to the left in. Figs. 1 and 3 to the position shown in Fig. 6, wherein the shank 2()l extends into the slot portion 12 and this shank and head extend wholly to the left in this figure beyond the` lugs 14. The head 22 in this movement moves against the cam surfaces 16, forcing the spring tongue 17 rearwardly in this movement, and upon passing the lugs 14,
the tongue 17 springs back and occupies the positionshown in which it prevents the head 22 from slipping out of its confined position. To disengage the sections of the fastener, the operator presses rearwardly on the stud po-rtion 19 to rearwardly deflect the tongue 17 and simultaneously slides the stud 19 to theright in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, the head 22 passing along the rear edges of the lugs 14 and entering, and passing through, the enlar ed slot portion 13, to released position.
I'will be understood from the foregoing that a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is not only of simple construction and inexpensive tornianufacture,
but it also possesses the characteristic of permitting the operator to quickly assemble and disassemble the sections of the fastener and preventing the accidental disengagement of these sections.
While I have illust-rated and rescribed a particular constructipn embodying Vmy invention and have shown it as adapted more particularly for use on garments, I do not Wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, asthe same may be variously modified and altered'and embodied in structures for other uses than that referred to, Without departing from the .spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the character set forth, comprising a plate containing a stud-receiir7` ing opening therethrough enlarged at one end, with stop-formingv portions at said opening, and a spring tongue extending` adjacent said opening, said tongue being formed from the metal displaced to produce said opening.
2. A device of the character set forth, comprising a single plate containing a studreceiving opening therethrough enlarged at one end with stop-forming portions at said opening provided with camming surfaces in the rear of the stop-forming surfaces of said portions, and a spring tongue located adjacent said opening and extending throughout its length substantially within the plane of said plate, said tongue throughout its length being substantially straight, whereby the free end of the spring is requiredto be moved'in a direction away from said stopforming portions in the movement of the stud against said camniing surfaces to interlockedposition relative to the plate, and a substantially thin construction `of i device may be provided. Y Y f i 3. A device ofthe character set forth,
Acomprising an integral plate` having a tongue vcut from the metal of the plate within the margins of the latter and united at one end with the plate, said plate containing an opening Vformed by cutting the metal to produce the tongue, said opening being of enlarged width adjacent the end of the tongue at which the latter is supported, said plate having stop-forming portions at the opposite edges of said opening formed by integral portions of saidV plate bent to extend at an angle to the plane of said plate."
4L. A device of the Vcharacter set forth. comprising a plate containing a stud-receiv ing opening therethroughY enlarged at one end, with stopforming y portions at said opening provided with camming surfaces, and a springtongue located adjacent said opening and formed from the metal displaced to produce said opening.
