To allv whom t may concern."
"A 'Beyit known that '1, rELEANOR A. HrmL- BUTT, a citizen ofthe' UnitedStates, :residing at Parrish,` in the county' of ',Langlade f 'and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Blasteners; and I do herebydec-lare the follow,- ing to be a fu ll, clear, and exactvdescripa tion of.` the invention,',sucl1 asQwill enable others skilled in fthegart to which it appertainsto make and usethe same.
The l,primary object of this invention is the provlsion of a `garment fastening de,- signed/to replace the ordinary vhook and the garment or come apart casually and Awhich by proper manipulation may be easily eye and which, in practice, wiill not tear and conveniently engaged and' dlsengaged. -Y While the fastener is intended primarily A for garments, it is to be understood that itis adapted for various uses where buekles, snap fasteners and the like are generally employed.
, Other objects and .advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodi' ment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various chan es in the form, proportion and minor detai s of construction may be resorted to without` departing' from the nature of the invention. p
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
. Figure 1 is a detail view of a fastener embodying the invention, the members being` engaged,
Figure 3 is a detail view showing the first step in the operation of engaging the members, and
Figure 4 is a view showingthe second step in the operation of engaging the members, the third and final step residing in bringing the two members into substantlally the same plane. v
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The fastener comprises complemental members and 2, each consisting of a plate adapted to be attached to the part to .which the fastener is to bev applied., As shown each of the plates is provided with openings 3 to :receive stitching whereby the fastener is sewed to a-garment. The member 1 is provided with an elongated opening;r 4 hav ing a relative transverse arrangement. A slit or narrow opening 5 extendsoutwardl from the elongated'opening 4 throughthe.
outer edge ofthe plate and provides a passage for the neck portion G of the member 2. The passage 5 isl disposed midway the ends of the elongated openings 4 and provides for the coupling and the uncoupling of the parts comprising the fastener.
The member 2 is provided with a centrallyI disposed neck' portion 6 and, cross-` y head 7 which projects an equal distance upon opposite 'sides of the neck G.v The neck 6 isof greater widthv than the passage 5 to prevent its movement therethrough when the members 1 and 2 are disposed substantially inthe sameplane. The neck 6, however, is sliiciently thin to pass readily through the passage. 5 when the member 2 is disposedfin a. plane perpendicular to the member 1 and at a right angle thereto, as indicated most clearly in Figure 3. After the neck portion 6 ,of the member 2 has l been .passed through the narrow passage 5, the member 2 is given a one-quarter turn to bring. the crosshead 7 in line with the elongated opening '4, as indicated most vclearly in Figure 4. The two members 1 and 2 are disposed relatively at a lright angle to each other and movement of the member 2 to bringit substantially in the plane of the member 1 completes the. engagement 'of the parts comprisingthe fastener as indica'ted most clearly in Figure 1. It will be understood that the fastener is not liable to become disengaged because of the preoise movement necessary to uncouple the same, the action being the reverse of that essential to eifect a coupling or engagement of the parts. rlhe outer end of the narrow passage 5 is flared to facilitate the entrance of the relatively broad snap neck 6 when positioning the vlatter preliminary to effecting a coupling of the members 1 and 2. The three movements necessary are quickly effected after the operation of the fastener is Y' thorou hly-understood, the movements being defy performed both in the coupling and in the uncoup-ling ofthe parts,
What is claimed is 1. A fastener of the character specified Iin comprising 4complemental members, one of the members having a transversely elongated opening and a narrow passage leading outwardly from the elongated openinfr through the outer edge of the member, and
ythe companion member having a centrally disposed neck relatively broadand thin Vand a crosshead at the outer end of the neck,
said neck being adapted to V'pass `edgewise through the narrow passage and being prevente from disengagement by substantially a one-quarter turn of the'. member, the two `mem-bers being subsequently vbrouglit"into substantially Athe same plane.
2.-A fastener of the Lcharacter specified comprising complemental plates', one of the plates having a transverselyelongated opening adjacent its outer edge and having a'- centr'ally disposed narrow passage leading through the outer edge of the plate and the companion pla-te having a relatively broad neck and a crosshead at the outer end' thereof,' saidl neck being adapted -to pass outwardly from the elongated opening edgewise through the narrow passage and prevented from disengagement therewith by substantially a y one-quarter turn,l the `two plates 'being brought tosubstantially thev lsame'planewvlnen ltle fastener is in .operative position.
3. A 'fastener of the class described havingiafirst member anda second member, the irst member being rovided with a slot rand a passage leading tlierefrom to` an edge of the'first member, the second member hav- Aing a neck and a fastening head disposed atan anglethereto, said passage beingA of Vless wid/th than the neck to necessitate edgel f wise passage of the ,neck therethrough andA
