Be it known that I, CHARLES D. MGKEN- NEY, a citizenV of the United States, residing at Petersburg, inthe county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented'certain new `and useful Improvementsjin Luggage Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings This invention relates to certain improvements in luggage holders and has relation more particularly to a device ofthis general character j especially designed and adapted for use in connection with the running board of an automobile to` maintain a trunk or the like thereonjand.` it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means for engagement with `the trunk or the like.

The invention consists in the detailsof construction and inthe combination and arrangement of the severalparts of my improved luggage holder whereby certain important advantages `are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous .for use,

as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. j f a The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the V better understood, I will' now proceed to describe the same with reference `to theaccompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in Vperspective illustrating a luggage holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes the running board of an automobile and upon which is adapted to be rested a trunk T, said trunk being provided in one of its side walls adjacent its opposite ends with the plates l, each provided with a socket 2. a The plates 1 are positioned at substantially the transverse center of the side walls of the trunk.

A Engaged with the running board lB and coacting with the opposite end j portions of the trunk T are the holders I-I. These holders are -of duplicate"construction and a description o-f one is therefore believed to besufhcient for the purposes of disclosure.

Each of the holders I-I Vcomprises anV elongated rigid member orstrap 8 adapted` to be disposed transversely j of the'board B and which has its opposite end portions outwardly offset as atLto provide shelves uponY which an end'portionl'ofthe trunk T is adapted -to directly rest.` The portions 4 ,terminate in the upstanding flanges 5 which overlie the 'side faces of 'the applied trunk. Secured to the; centralf portion of each of the members or straps 3 is an end portion of a rigid arm 6, said armfextending outwardly with respect lto the member or ustrap 3 and provided Vin-itsA free end portion ,with an opening 7. i

A rod R has one end portion "disposed through the opening 7 and also vthrough the running :board B, said rod R' beinglprovided with an outstanding annular shoulder 8` which engages the arm 6. A nut 10 is threaded upon the lower portion of the rod R and-engages the runningboard B from below whereby the rod R isheld ini-avverticalV position upon the board B andthe member or strap 3V alsoeifectively secured to the board B.

' `C denotes a clampmember having o ne the end portion of the applied trunk T adjacent to the rod R and'is provided with a depending lug lll herein disclosed as in the form of a truncated cone which is adapted to be received within the socket 2 of the adjacent plate 1. A wing nut 15 is threaded upon the rod R above the clamp member C and by requisite turning movement of the wind nut l5, the clamp member C is caused to have proper engagement with the upper portio-n of the trunk T whereby the same is effectively held upon the running board B.

and it Will also be obvio-us that -my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without departing from-'ltheprinciples and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not WishV to be understood as limiti-ng myself to the precise arrangement andy formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice eX- ceptas hereinafter claimed.

I claiml.Y A device of the class described 'comprising, in combination, a rod, means for connecting an endportion thereof .to the 'running board of a vehicle, a member adapted ttoA be rested upon sai-d` running board and 'disposed' transversely thereof, 'an outstanding arm carried bythe 'central portion of the member,l the rod extending through said arm, said rod having a shoulder coacting With :said arm whereby the rod, Whe-n in applied position, maintains the member Vupon the `running board.

2. In combination with the running boa-rd of a vehicle and a trunk having a socketin one of its Walls, a post secured 'to the running board and extending upwardly therefrom, a clamping member loosely mounted upon the post, said clamping mem- 'ber having a lug to engage, Within the socketof the trunk, and means for maintaining the clamping member in 'operative engagement with the trunk.

3.: In combination with the running board of a vehicle and a trunk having a socket in one of Vits Walls, a post secured tothe running board and extending upwardly ltherefrom, a clamping member loosely lmounted -upon the post, vsaid clamping member having a lug Vto engage Within the socket of the trunk, and means carriedby the ,post and coacting with the clampingv member tomaintain the clamping member in Working engagement With the trunk.
