Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL C. POUNDSTONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mellen, in the county of Ashland and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Releasable Pockets for the Stakes of Logging-Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in releasable pockets for the stakes of logging cars and has relationmore particularly to a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the stakes may be rigidly locked in position during the transportation of a load and quickly released when it is desired to remove the load, and is an improvement on a similar device as embodied in the co-pending application of Frederick I. Martin and Earl C. Poundstone, filed April 8, 1916, Serial No. 89,907. 7
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein relatively movable jaws are employed which are adapted to be swung to a closed position to maintain a stake in applied position together with releasable means whereby said jaws may be effectively maintained in such closed relation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved releasable pocket whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features ofthe invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood,I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating releasable pockets constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a sill of aflat car generally employed in the transportation of logs and the like, and secured to the outer face of said sill S in predetermined longitudinal spaced relation are the pockets P for the stakes A.
In practice it is conventional to have two stakes at each side of a car coact with a tier of logs and for this reason it is my purpose to have a pair of adjacent pockets under control of a single or common trip rod T as will hereinafter be more particularly set forth.
As herein embodied, each of the pockets P includes a base 1 suitably anchored, as at 2, with a sill S and which has its upper margin substantially flush with the upper surface of the sill.
Pivotally engaged, as at 3, with the base 1 are the jaws 4, said pivotal connections being alforded through the medium of the pins 5 disposed through the 'coacting ears 6 carried by the jaws 4: and the base 1. The ears of the jaws 4 are bifurcated and disposed within the kerf a of one of the ears is a link of the chain 7 and through which the pivot pin 5 is also directed, and whereby the chain 7 is suitably anchored.
Within the kerf a of the ear of the sec ond jaw 4 is disposed the hub 8 of the hook member 9 and through which the second pivot pin 5 is also directed whereby it will be noted that the hook member 9 is capable of swinging movement.
The hook member 9 is adapted to be disposed through a link of the chain 7 and when swung inwardly toward the sill S serves to maintain the jaws 4 in closed position, and whereby the stake A is effectively held in applied position.
The hub 8 of the hook member 9 is provided with the tail pieces 10 disposed toward the base 1 and with which the latch L coacts to maintain the hook member 9 against outward movement with the resultant reprises the member 11 pivotally engaged, as at 12, with the base 1 and provided with the upstanding finger lat preferably disposed on a predetermined inward curvature and which has pivotally engaged with its free extremity the rigid link 15 which is also pivotally engaged with the trip rod 1 here inbefore referred to. It will be perceived that upon requisite movement being imparted to the trip rod T in one direction the latch L will be swung out of operative engagement with the tail piece 10, whereupon the chain 7 may be readily disengaged from the hook 9 under the influence of the weight of the load imposed upon the stake.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a releasable pocket constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it willalso be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination with a supporting structure, coacting stake receiving jaws pivotally engaged therewith, a flexible member anchored at one end and coacting with the jaws to maintain'the same in closed relation, a pivotally supported hook member coacting with the flexible member for holding the same in operative engagement with the jaws, a tail piece carried by the hook member, a movable latch coacting with the tail piece for holding the hook member against movement, and means for operating the latch.
2. In combination with a supporting structure, coacting stake receiving jaws pivotally engaged therewith, a flexible member anchored at one end and coacting with the jaws to maintain the same in closed relation, a pivotally supported hook member coacting with the flexible member for holding the same in operative engagement with the jaws, a tail piece carried by the hook member, a movable latch coacting with the tail piece for holding the hook member against movement, a finger extending from the latch substantially at right angles to its pivot, a trip rod, and a link connection betweenthe trip rod and the finger.
