To'aZZ whom it may concern: 1 Be it known that I, ROBERT J. BARRY a citizen of the United -States, residing at Bingham, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented new and.
useful Improvements in Oar-Stake Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of car stake binders and holders, and has primarily for its object to provide a plurality of car stakes adapted to be normally carried in operative position, but which, when not in use, may be conveniently removed from their supports and expeditiously carried at the sides of the car where they will in no way interfere with the ordinary functions required thereof, and where they cannot become lost or misplaced.
Another object of my invention is to provide a plurality of brackets of such novel and peculiar construction as to carry in a convenient manner a number of car stakes when the latter are not in use, which brackets are secured to the'sides of a car in such a manner as not to interfere in any way with the loading or unloading thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide tn-especially constructed device to be used in connection with the car stakes herein mentioned, which device will enable the free ends of the binding element to be quickly and expeditiously connected for binding purposes.
Broadly my invention consists of a plurality of supports adapted to normally hold a number of car stakes in an upright position, which stakes when removed from such supports may be conveniently carried at the side of the car by means of a plurality of brackets.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a side elevation, illustrating the application of the invention, the dotted lines showing the relative position of the car stake when not in use. Fig. 2 is a section on the line aa of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the binding device. Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my inventlOIl'tllB numeral 1 designates the body or top of an ordinary fiat railway freight car,
upon the sides and ends of which are provided a number of supports 2, of the well known type, which supports normally hold in an upright position a like number of car stakes 3, each of which is secured to the car 1 by means of a suitable flexible member 4:. When it is desired that the stakes should be removed from their supports, the same may be carried at the sides of the car by means of a plurality of especially constructed brackets. All of said brackets'being in duplicate, only one of them will be described in detail. A base plate 5 is counter-sunk within the car side, its lower extremity extending below the lower edge of the car, which base creates a means for supporting a securing member 6, connected thereto through the medium of a pair'of rods or rests 7, upon which the car stakes 3 are adapted to rest when not in use. The outer face of the securing member 6 has a projection 8, upon which the binding element or chain 9 herein shown is secured when the stake is in a position as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the stakes are held in the following mannerz-The foot of one of the stakes rests upon the lower supporting rod of one of the brackets, while the top of the stake rests upon the upper or top supporting rod of the next or adjacent bracket, and the chain or binding element which is attached to the top of the stake is secured to the projection provided for that purpose. Another stake may be placed in the same manner, the foot resting upon the lower rod of the second bracket, while the top rests upon the upper rod of the next or third bracket. This operation may be continued for all the stakes, thus conveniently carrying them without endangering the loss thereof.
lVhile the ordinary chain 9 may be used as a binding element, I have devised. a specially constructed looking or securing device, particularly adapted for connecting the free ends of a binding element such as a rope or chain 10. One end of the chain is first secured to the looking member 11 through the medium of an eye 12 formed therein, while the other end of the chain has a loop formed therein, which loop is adapted to receive the said member for securely fastening the two chain ends together. After being fastened as described the member 11 should be raised or forced into a position similar to that shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, Where a link 13 carried by the chain is fastened over a hook 14 formed from said member, in which event the two chain ends are not only fastened, but se curely locked in such fastened position.
It will be readily seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the ideas of simplicity and durability have been adhered to as far as possible, and that by constructing a car stake binder and holder as previously described the same may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily comprehended.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a car having a plurality of supports secured thereto upon the sides and ends thereof, and a like number of car stakes adapted to be detachably secured to' the said supports in an upright position, of a plurality of brackets fixedly secured to the car adjacent the said supports, the said brackets comprising a base plate adapted to be countersunk into the car, a securing member carried by the said base plate in spaced relation thereto, a plurality of rods connecting the said plate and securing member upon which the car stakes are adapted to rest when removed from the said supports, and flexible members for securing the stakes to the car, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a car having a plurality of car stakes secured thereto, a binding element carried by said stakes, and means carried by said binding element for securing together the free ends thereof, and a plurality of supports carried by said car for holding said stakes in an upright position, of a plurality of brackets secured to the sides of said car, which brackets comprise a base plate, a securing member carried by said base, plate and a pair of rods for connecting said base plate to said securing member, and a projection disposed upon the upper face of said securing member, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
3. In combination with a car stake holder, binding elements secured to the top of said stakes, a securing device pivotedly carried by one of the free ends of said binding element, which member is adapted to fit within a loop provided upon the other free end of said binding element for fastening the two ends together, and means carried by one of the other endsof said binding element for locking the device in such fastened position, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
