To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatKI, THOMAS MoMrcnmL, a,citizen of the United States, residing at Purvis, in the county of Lamar and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Bumper-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved bumperblock and releasing means therefor for use on the bolster of a log car or wagon, the object of the invention being to provide an improved bumper block and means, which when struck by a peavy instantly releases the block and permits the unloading of the logs and without danger to the peavy man or operator.
The invention consistsin the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described andclaimed.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of a bolster provided with a bolster block and locking and releasing means constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the opposite side of the block and its connections. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 1 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view of the bumper block. Fig. 6 is a detail horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 7, is a detail elevation of one of the link arms. Fig. 8 is a similar view of the shackle element. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the locking pin.
The bolster 1 is of the usual construction and the bumper block 2 is of the form here shown and is adapted to be arranged on the upper side of the bolster, at one end thereof, to retain the logs in place. The bumper block is provided with a horizontal trans verse slot 3 which extends to and is open at the outer side of the block and the said block is also provided at points above and below said slot with metal straps l, 5 respectively and with a vertical groove 6 in its outer side said groove and straps coacting to receive a split spring locking pin 7 On opposite sides of the bolster are longitudinally curved link arms 8, 9 which are pivotally mounted on a pin 10 that extends through an opening at a suitable distance from said end of the bolster and also extends through openings in the link arms. lhe arm 9 is provided at its outer, free end with a notch 11 and a locking pin 1:2 has one end arranged in said notch and pivotally connected to the link arm 9 by a pin or other pivot 13. Said locking pin is provided near the opposite end with an annularly grooved portion 1a.
The link arm 8 has a slot 15 in its free outer end to receive the grooved or reduced portion let of the locking pin and is provided on its outer side with a shackle element 16 having a curved open slot 17 to receive the said grooved or reduced portion of the locking pin, said shackle element also having an operating arm 18 and being pivotally mounted on the link arm 8 by a pivot 19.
A stop shoulder 20 is on the outer side and at the free end of the link arm 8 and has a notch :21 for engagement by an arm 22 of the shackle element and said shackle element is normally held in closed position, engaged with the reduced portion of the locking pin, by means of a spring 28.
It will be understood that when the bumper block is thus mounted on the bolster, its slot engaged by the locking pin and free end of the locking pin held and secured to the arm 8 by the springclosed shackle element, the bumper block is securely fastened on the bolster and hence serves to retain the load of logs in place.
I/Vhen it is desired to release the bumper block and permit the discharge of the load of logs the split spring pin is first removed from the bumper block so that no obstruction will be in the way of the locking pin. The peavy man or other attendant will then, by means of the peavy or other suitable implement bear downwardly on the arm of the shackle element thus causing the latter to turn on its pivot against the tension of the spring and in sodoing release the free end of the locking pin. The pressure of the logs against the inner side of the bumper block then forces the bumper block outwardly, the locking pin turning on its pivot in the outer end of the link arm 9 and becoming disengaged from the slot and cleared out of the way of the bumper block, the latter being forced off the end of the bolster by the pres-v sure of the load, and the logs being discharged as will be understood.
In practice the split spring pin is connected to the arm 9 and prevented from being lost by a small chain 24:, as here shown.

per block thereon and having a slot in its outer side, a pair of link arms arranged on opposite sides of the bolster, a locking pin carried by one of the link arms and adapted for arrangement in the slot of the block and instantaneously releasable means to detachably secure the locking pin to the other link arm,

In combination with a bolster, a bumper block thereon having a transverse slot in its outer side, a pair of link arms pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the bolster, a locking pin pivotally connected to one of the link arms,,adapted for arrangement in the slot of the block and for detachable engagement With the other link arm, and instantaneously releasable means on the last named link arm to detachably secure the locking pin to said link arm.
3. In combination With a bolster, a bumper block thereon having a transverse slot in its outer side, a pair of link arms pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the bolster, a locking pin pivotally connected to one of the link arms, adapted for arrangement in the slot of the block and for detachable engagement With the other link arm, instantaneously releasable means on the last named link arm to detachably secure the locking pin to said link arm, said instantaneously releasable means including a pivotally mounted shackle element and a spring to normally hold the same in engaged position.
4. In combination With a bolster, a bumper block thereon, having a transverse slot in its outer side and also provided with a guide extending across said slot, a pair of link elements arranged one on each side oi the bolster, a locking pin flexibly connected to one link element and detaohably connected to the other and adapted for arrangement in the slot of the bumper block, a locking element in and removable from the guide of the bumper block and instantaneously operable locking means on the last named link element to detachably secure the locking pin thereto.
