Be it known that I, THOMAS R. FEERALL, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snatch-Blocks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speci fication.

This invention relates to improvements in snatch-blocks, and it is carried out as follows, reference beingV had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a front view, Fig. 2 a rear View, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of an all-metal snatch-block made according to myinvention. Figs. 4t, 5, and 6 represent corresponding views of the improved snatchblock made with Wooden cheek-pieces.

a and b represent the clieelcpieces, and c represents the end piece of the block, said parts being made of wood or metal, according to the construction of the snatch-block.

A and B represent the metal straps, which may be secured to the cheek-pieces a and b, and formed at their upper ends with eyes A and B. They are preferably, however', made, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, in the form of bow-straps, in which case the cheek-pieces are inclosed within the same, a space being left between the upper ends of the metal straps and the ends of the cheek-pieces to form the eyes A and B.

A' and B are eyes or loops at the upper ends of the respective metal straps A and B, as shown.

D represents the sheave, as usual, journaled on the pin or spindle d, that passes throughthe perforations in t-he straps A B and cheek-pieces a Z), as shown.

E is a metal link pivoted in itslower end to the bow or eye B of the strap B, said link being pivoted in its upper end to the head F, as shown.

f is the hook or bail, the shank of which is journaled to and riveted in a perforation in the head F, as is common in snatch-blocks. The head F has in one end ahorizontal shank or trunnion F', terminating as a T-head F extending vertically above and below said trunnion F as shown.

To the loop or eye A of the metal strap A is pivoted the metal link G, having a slot g in its upper end, as shown, said slot being of a width equal to or a little wider than the diameter of the trunnion F', and of a length equal to or a little less than the length of the T-head F, so as to prevent the accidental unlocking or detachment of the head F and its flanged trunnion from the said slotted link G.

lVhen it is desired to unlock the headF from the link G in placing a rope on the sheave D, the head is swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the slotted link G is swung outward to the position shown in dotted lines in said iigure, after which the said link may be swung freely outward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6,suffi ciently to enable the rope to be placed within the block and around the sheave D. After the rope is laid around the sheave the slotted link G is swung backward over the T-headed flange F", and the latter locked in position to said link, as shown in t-he drawings.

With my device all thatis necessary to do is to turn the hook and its head and the slotted link in the same direction for the purpose of disengaging one from the other or locking them together after the rope is put on the sheave.

Vith my invention the greatest safety possible is obtained, as the head Fcannot under any circumstances be detached from the slotted link G unless the parts mentioned are carefully manipulated by the operator in the manner as above described.

lVhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-

1. ln a snatch-block, the combination, with the cheeks d and b, end piece c, sheave D, and the metal straps A and B, provided with eyes A and B', of the link E, pivoted in the eye B, the head F, connected with said link, the trunnion F', vertical T-head F", and the slotted link G, pivoted in the eye A and adapted to engage the trunnion F', substantially as described.
