Description
F. E. BEST CYLINDER LOCK vJul s 1924.
Filed Feb. 14, 1922 GM 55M a i lg? Patented July 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES P T omen- FRANK E. BEST, or sEaTTLE, WASHINGTON. a 35w"- GYLINDER LOCK.
Application filed February 14, 1922.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Bnsr. a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and more especially to door locks of the cylinder type,
it) and its object is the provision of simple and conveniently applied means for removably securing the core assembly within the lock cylinders.
The invention in its preferred form is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the lock cylinder; and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cylinder from the side diametrically opposite to that in which it is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Figs. 1 and 2, and shown partly broken away and partly in section.
In said drawings, the reference numeral 25 5 represents a housing of cylindrical shape for a core-frame 6 having at one end a plate element, or face, which is integral with the frame 6. The core frame 6 ,contains the key-plug 8 which carries the arm or throw 9 whereby the lock-bolt, not shown, is moved into and from its operative position.
The housing 5 is furthermore provided with external screw threads 10 which are engageable with internal threads provided as usual in the latch casing of the lock for securing the housing thereto against axial separation. 11 represents longitudinal grooves provided in the periphery of said housing, either of said grooves being adapted to be revolubly brought into position to receive any well known or suitable means for securing the housing from rotating.
The above named parts are or may be similar to devices hitherto employed in cylinder locks.
According to the present invention I provide novel devices for removably securing the core assembly within the casing. Such devices comprise a slotted set screw 12 taking in a screw threaded hole 13 provided in the casing 5 and engaging the core frame '6. For convenience in manufacture the hole 13 Serial No. 536,428.
is disposed radially of the upper cylinder axis. The screw 12 is preferably provided with a rounded extremity 12 which protrudes from the inner end of the cylinder hole 13 and seats in a correspondingly shaped socket 14 provided in the core frame whereby the latter is positively held in pre determined axial relations with respect to the housing.
When in use the core housing 5, is secured within the lock case or member in which it is installed, as shown in Fig. 2 so that there will be no possibility of the screw 12 working or jarring loose and releasing the core and so that access to the screw 12 will not be possible except by removal of the core housing from the lock case. The screw 12 being arranged to engage with and project into a hole in the upper cylindrical portion of the substantially figure 8 shaped lock core will not interfere in any way with the operation of the rotatable key plug 8 which is disposed in the lower cylindrical portion of said core and may be securely tightened so that it will hold the core rigid with respect to the core housing. The screw 12 entering a hole or indentation, not a groove, forms a positive lock that will be prevent removal of the core, as distinguished from so a the other screw shown in Fig. 3 which enters the groove 11 in the core housing and only prevents the engaged member from turning.
l/Vith my invention the core assembly is detachably secured to the housing and may be readily removed from the latter by retracting the set screw.
l/Vhat I claim, is,-
1. In a lock of the class described the combination with a core housin arranged to be inserted in a lock case and provided with a hole in one side, of a core adapted to fit into said core housing and having an indentation arranged to register with said hole in said core housing and detent means operable in said hole and arranged to enter said indentation to retain said core in said core housing, access to said detent means being impossible when said core housing is within a lock case.
2. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a core housing arranged to be inserted in a lock case and provided in one side with a screw threaded hole, of a screw being prevented by insertion of said core adapted to fit into said core housing (ore housing into a lock case. 10
