MEYER CGI-IN AND WILLIAM PRQBST, 0F GHILLICOTHE, OHIO.
PROTECTOR FOR COLLAR BUTTONS.
Application filed October 4, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, MEYER COHN and IVILLIAM Pnons'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Collar Buttons, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to a guard or protector adapted to be applied to the base of a collar button for the purpose of covering the same in such manner so as to ensure a. tight lit between the button and the neckband of the shirt to which the same is applied, also to produce an air cushion between the button and the neck of the wearer so as to avoid any disagreeable pressure or contact, and also to prevent the collar button from discoloring the inner. surface of the neckband or the neck of the wearer and prevent chafing or otherwise injuriously affecting that part of the neck of the wearer which ordinarily would be engaged by the collar button.
One of the purposes of this invention is to provide a guard or protector of this character which is capable of being applied to and removed from various sizes of standard forms of collar buttons now on the market, and thus render the same capable of practically universal use, such collar buttons consisting generally of a large base, a comparatively small head and a reduced neck connecting the base and head.
Another object of this invention is to provide a guard or protector of this character which will not only protect the neckband of the shirt and the neck of the wear er against the possibility of coming in contact with the base of the button and being discolored thereby, but also to provide an air cushion between the base of the button and the neckband and the neck of the wearer which will avoid wearing the neckband and also prevent any discomfort to the wearer.
A further object of this invention is to provide a guard or protector having the above capacity which is simple in construction and capable of being produced at low cost and thus possess the requisites for going into general use.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a collar button provided with a guard or roteo Serial No. 666,614.
tor embodying our improvements. Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3, 8, Figure 1.
Similar characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Although this guard or protector is adapted for use in connection with collar buttons which may vary as to their details of construction, the button shown in the drawings, for example, is typical of one suitable for use in connection with our invention and as there shown, the same comprises a comparatively large circular base l, a co "iparatively small head 5, and a reduced neck 6 com'i-ecting the central part of the base with the corresponding part of the head. In this instance the several parts of the button are all stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal, but obviously this button could be otherwise constructed as the same forms no part of the present invention.
Our improved guard or protector which is designed to be used in connection with thiscollar button may be variously organized, but in the preferred form the same is constructed as follows:
'Ihe nunieral 7 represents a disc or circular diaphragm adapted to extend across the underside of the base of the collar button and preferably constructed of downwardl dished concavo-convex form so that an air space 8 is formed between the underside of the button base and this protecting disc.
At its periphery or marginal edge, this protecting disc is provided with an upwardly and inwardly turned or curled attaching flange 9 which passes upwardly around the edge of the button base a and in actual use engages its inner terminal edge 10 with the upper side of the button base at a distance from the edge thereof, as shown in Figure 1.
Adjacent to its peripheral edge or margin, the protecting disc 7 is provided on its upper side with an annular bearing rib or bead 11 which is preferably concentric with the axis of the disc 7 and adapted to bear with its upper side against the under side of the button base 7, as shown in Figure 1. The location of this bead 11 and the edge of the flange 1G is preferably so determined that they are vertically in line or substantially so, and bear against opposite sides of the same part of the button base 4 and form a practically air tight joint between this bead and flange and the base of the button.
. By this means the space 8 intervening between the underside of the collar button and the upper surface of the disk 7 practically forms an air tight cushion and a similar air tight air cushion 1.2 is formed between the flange 9 and the edge of the button base 4. Furthermore, the disk 7 will bear yieldingly and with an air cushion effect against the neck of the wearer or the adjacent part of an undergarment which may be present and thereby avoid any disagreeable pressure thereagainst, thereby avoiding undue wear if the same should bear against an undergarment, as well as preventing chafing of the neck of the wearer or producing any injurious effects, such as possible chafing, infection or discoloration which otherwise might be liable to occur, as has been the case heretofore, due to the presence of injurious substances on collar buttons not provided with a protecting cover or attachment. The air cushion formed around the edge of the button base also serves to form a. tight [it between the head of the button and the shirt band for the purpose of preventing pinching of the neck of the wearer and also avoiding undue wear upon these parts and discoloration of the same which otherwise would be liable to occur, as well as taking up the slack between the several thicknesses of goods which constitute the garment and ensuring a comfortable fit of the same.
The disk 7, flange 9 and the rib or bead 11 are preferably constructed integrally from a single piece of rubber by molding in any suitable and approved manner, the consistency of this rubber being sucn that the same is flexible or elastic. The same is therefore capable of being readily stretched so that the flange 9 can be sprung over the edge of the button base for properly engaging the edge of this flange and the rib or bead of the disk with transversely opposing sides of the button base.
Owing to the simplicity in the construe-- tion of this guard or protector, it is possible to manufacture the same in large quantities economically and uniformly and thus permit of their general use without materially increasing the cost over and above that of ordinary collar buttons unprovided with such a protector.
W e claim as our invention:
1. The combination with a collar button having a base, a head and a neck connecting the base and head, of a flexible rubber disk mountedon said base and forming therewith an air cushion on the underside of the butten.
2. The combination with a collar button having a base, a head and a neck connecting the base and head, of means mounted on said base and forming an air cushion therewith on the underside of the button and comprising a flexible rubber disk extending across the underside of said base but separated therefrom by an intervening space and having its edge connected with the edge of the base by an air tight joint.
3. The combination with a collar button having a base, a head and a neck connecting the base and head, of means mounted on said base and forming an air cushion therewith on the underside of the button and comprising a flexible rubber disk extending across the underside of said base but separated therefrom by an intervening space and provided at its edge with an upwardly and inwardly turned flange which passes around the edge of the base and engages with the upper side thereof and an annular rib arranged on the upper side of said disk adj acent to the edge thereof and engaging with the underside of said base.
i. A protector for collar buttons having a base, a head and a neck connecting said iase and head, comprising a disk provided on its edge with an upwardly and inwardly turned flange and on its upper side adjacent to said flange with an annular rib.
5. A protector for collar buttons having a base, a head and a neck connecting said base and head, comprising a downwardly dished concave-convex rubber disk provided on its edge with an upwardly and inwardly turned flange and on its upper side adjacent to said flange with an annular rib.
6. A protector for collar buttons having a base, a head and a neck connecting said base and head, comprising a downwardly dished concave-convex disk provided on its edge with an upwardly and inwardly turned flange and on its upper side adjacent to said flange with an annular upwardly projecting rib, said disk, flange and rib being constructed integrally of soft flexible rubber.
