MORRIS D. BENNETT, OF HORSEHEADS, NEW'YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKETS FOR CHAIN-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,977, dated April 21, 1874; application filed March 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MonRIs D. BENNETT, of Horseheads, in the county of (Jhemung and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Buckets for Chain-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my bucket. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a topplan view.
This invention has relation to buckets which are especially designed for chain-pumps and it consists in the combination, with a cup having a loop or link formed on it, of an adjustable convex looped portion, whereby an expansible packing is obtained, as will be herein after more fully explained.
The following is a description of my invention:
In the annexed drawings, A represents a cup, which is hollow and hemispherical, and which has a loop or link, a, formed on its convex side. B designates a plane-convex plug, having a loop or link, I), formed on its bottom flat surface, and a screw-threaded stem, 0, formed on its upper convex side and in the center thereof. The screw-stem c is received through a threaded hole made through the center of the cup A, as shown in Fig. 2. O designates a packing, which is of larger diameter than the diameter of the cup A, and which is preferably made of india-rnbbcr, although it may be made of any other suitable material. This packing O is circular in form, and it has a hole through its center to receive through it the screw-stem c.
It will be seen from the above description that when the three parts A, B, and G are put together and screwed tightly, the circumference of the packing C will be exposed evenly beyond the edge of 'the cup'A, and will be directed downward. By turning the part B the packing O can be expanded or contracted in its diameter and made to fit the bore of the pump-tube, and as the packing wears smaller from use it can be readily expanded to fit the tube-bore again.
WVhen the washer is worn until it is useless a new washer can be substituted for it by simply unscrcwing the parts A B. The parts A B I may be made of malleable iron and galvanized to prevent them from rusting.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pump-bucket for chain-pumps, consisting of the concave-convex upper portion A, having a loop or link, a, formed on it,in combination with the plano-convex adjustable portion B, having a loop, I), and a screw, 0, formed on it, substantially as described. v
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the pres ence of two witnesses.
I MORRIS D. BENNETT.
Witnesses O. BURCH, M. RICKEY.
