Description

July 1, 1924. 1,499,655
H. w. HARGIS SMOOTHING PLANE Filed May 31 1923 Patented July 1924.
UNITED STATES ATENT' FHCE.
SM'OOTHING PLANE.
Application filed May 31, 1923.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY W. HARGIS, a resident of Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenberg and State of North Carolina, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoothing Planes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in smoothing planes and the main object being the provision of means capable of application to planes at the time of manufacture or upon planes in general use, which will prevent clogging' or choking of the material in the throat or passage of the plane.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means of the character and for the purpose stated which will add such a small amount to the cost of the plane as to make my improvements highly desirable and satisfactory.
Another object of my invention is the pro vision of means which may be applied to planes in use or at the time of manufacture, which will be simple, strong and durable in construction and greatly enhance the cf ficiency and practicability of the plane.
With these objects in view, my invention consists of means of the character and for the purpose stated embodying novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as described. and defined by the claims, and as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a smoothing plane equipped with my improvements.
Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the plane, and
Fig. 3 represents a sectional view'takon on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, I have shown my improvement as applied to a construction or type of smoothing plane in common and general use, and it will not be necessary for me to pecifically describe the construction of such plane.
My invention i of extremely simple construction and operates in conjunction withv the transverse knife throat or passage A, and the knife or cutter B, and consists of the Serial No. 642,501.
milled roller C, mounted to permit an accommodating movement upon the shaft or rod D, such roller being held in proper relation to the knife by the pair of spring arms E, and in conjunction with said milled roller, I employ the comb-shaped guard F, carried upon the roller G, one of whose bearings H is mounted in the plane in stationary position, while its other bearing I-I', is mounted in an open bearing J of the plane,
being retained therein by the spring retain ing arm K, all as clearly shown in the drawmg 7 The operation of my invention will be readily understood by all persons skilled in such matters, and it will be apparent that the milled roller is disposed in such relation to the knife or blade B, as to cause the shavings made by the knife to be carried by the rotating action of said roller upward, then against the guard and discharged away from the plane, absolutely preventing any clogin or chokin of the assa e as is so com- 1. In a smoothing plane and in combination with the knife and knife passage thereof, a roller yieldingly mounted in. said passage to guide the shavings therethrough, and a guard disposed. in proper relation to said yielding roller.
2. In a smoothing plane and in combination with the knife and knife passage thereof, a rotating member mounted in said passage to guide the shavings therethrough, and'a comb-shaped guard disposed in proper relation to said yielding member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
HARRY WV. HARGIS.
