Description

Patented duly ll, i924-,
`unitn-iran Wisin, or
.application filed IW arch 7, 1922.
T all @0.7mm t may concern:
.Be it known that I, EDWARD llnn., a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Fan, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a hand fan, the object being to produce an article wherein a rigid l0 handle is unitary with the fan body, in contradistinction to ordinary artificially made fans composed of a paper body and a wooden handle attached rigidly together by tacks or staples.
According to this invention, the body and the handle are cut or stamped from appropriate material in a single piece to produce a blank of form which by subsequent manipulation results in a handle integral with. the fan body, said handle possessing the stiffness or rigidity desirable for manipulating the article. lin addition to securing a handle unitary 4with the fan body, it is desirable to stiffen the connection between the handle and the body with a View to minimizing the tendency of the body or the handle to break off in the act of using` the fan, and to this end I fashion the blank with rings that are positioned in lapping relation to the body and are suitably attached thereto, said wings performing` the function of stays in adding to the stiffness of the body.
@ther functions and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan View of the cut out blank scored and slitted to produce a fan with an integral handle in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the completed article produced from the blank of Figure 1.
Figures 3 and 4 are horizontal cross sections taken in the planes of the dotted lines 3-3 and @-4, respectively, of Figure 2.
The article is produced by cutting or stamping a blank, shown in Figure 1, from appropriate material, such as cardboard or tagboard, although any material suitable for the purpose may be used. Said blank comprises a body member A and a part which may be described as a shank B, folds C C and D D and wings E E, said blank being slitted along the lines a and creased or scored at lines c d e f, .As shown the BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.

slits a o extend from the margins of the blank inwardly to the score lines c c so as to separate the body A from certain folds and wings. The score lines c c. bound the shank B which remains in the plane of the body A, whereas the score lines d f are parallel to the score lines c c so as to determine the limits of the folds C C and D D.
The body A is of a desirable form, as shown, being of circular outline for the major part, although the particular shape is nt a factor in my article.
The blank having been cut or stamped, it remains to manipulate the same in a manner to produce the handle and the stays, and such manipulation is performed by doubling the fold D with the wing E upon the fold C on the line (l, and by doubling the folds C D on the line c upon the shank B, thus bringing the wing E into lapping relation to the body A, as in Figures 2 and 3, and in a similar manner theV folds D with wing E is doubled on the line f upon the fold (l, and then folds C D are doubled on the line c into lapping relation to shank B and for the wing E to overlap the body A. The folds C D and wing E are doubled in an opposite direction to the folds C D and E', and then the doubled material has lapping relation to the shank on the opposite faces thereof, and similarly the wings E F/ overlap the body on the opposite faces thereof, all. as clearly shown in Figures 2, 3 and l of the drawings. In my article the wings E E are positioned to overlap the fan body adjacent the union between the handle and said body, and in the article shown in Figures 2 and 3 these wings are extended for appreciable distances and in opposite directions to an axial line which intersects the body and the handle. With an axial line extending through the handle and the body, the wing l extends in one direction from said line and into overlapping relation to one face of the body, whereas the other wing E extends from the axial line in an opposite direction to the wing E, said wings E E being shown respectively in full and dotted lines in Figure 1. The wings E E are at the base of the fan body and add materially to the stability of the connection between said body and the handle, as a result of which the article will not rupture at the weakest point when the fan is used by swaying it back and forth.
The folded. material is united to the shank in a desi-red Way, and the wings E E are united to the body A; in a preferred form, t-he folds C D are cemented to each other and to the shank, and folds C D are ce mented together and to the shank, said wings E E being adhesively attached to the body. f
The handle is thus composed of the shank and the four folds adhesively attached so as to produce a rigid structure extending' out- -W-,ardly from the fan body and integral therewith. lThe wings extend from the handle inwardly toward the body and in lapping rela tion thereto, said wings being adhesively attached and extending for a substantial distance along the inner edge of the body adjacent to the handle, so as to provide stays Whichzminimize that tendency of the body in the use of the fan to crack or break at and djacent to .the union of the handle With the ody.
The blank is of such form that the Lentire article is produced by cutting from material with a `small amount of waste or scrap, thus contributing' to the economy of manufacture. Obviously, the body and the handle ,may be :finished or decorated in a desired manner to add to the attractiveness ,of the article, and if desired, the body may serve as a means for the display of advertising matter.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. As a new article, a fan embodying a body portion, a handle integral therewith, and a plurality of wings extending; from the handle into overlapping relation to the body on the respective faces thereof, said wings contacting with the body adjacent the union with the handle and said wings extending in opposite directions from an axial line intersecting the handle and the body.
2. As a new article, a fan embodying a body portion, a handle composed of a plurality of members folded into overlapping relation, said members being integral with each other and one of which is integral with the body portion, and a plurality of wings integral with certain outer members of said handle, said wings extending outwardly from the line of the folded handle and into overlapping relation to the body portion adjacent the union `thereof with said handle,
said wings extending in opposite directions from an axial kline intersectingl the handle and the body portion and said wings being secured in iixed relation to the .body portion on the respective faces thereof.
ln testimony whereof I hare hereto signed my name this 20th day of February, 1922.
