DRILL-PRESS TABLE.
Application filed August 8, 1921, Serial No. 490,796. Renewed November 19, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. HART- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill- Press Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an adjustable table, mainly designed for drill presses, the
general object of the invention being to provide means for making the table adjustable 4 vertically and also about a vertical axis.
Another object of the invention is to make the table adjustable on a vertical axis passing throu h the center of the table.
A further object of the invention is to make the table of angle shape, the horizontal part being connectedwith the supporting means.
A still further object of the invention is to form the table of two sections, each section being of angle shape and supported as above set forth. I
While the invention is mainly designed for drill presses as above set forth it will of course be understood that I do not wish to be limited to this use of the invention, and when the table is used with drill presses it may be supported from a part of the press or from a separate support, as desired.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the-several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a side view of a drill press with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a front view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on line44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a front view of a table used alone, the two section of the table being shown in different position.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a side view of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one of the table sections taken from the front thereof.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 8 showing the table section from its underside.
.Figure 10 is a view showing the table sections assembled in spaced relation.
Figure 11 is a view showing the table sections assembled in contact with the depending angles on the outside.
Figure 12 is a view similar to Figure 11 with the table sections separated.
Figure 13 is a view showing the manner in which the table sections are positioned when drilling a small cylindrical. object.
Figure ll is a view similar to Figure 13 but showing the positionof the table sections for drilling a larger cylindrical obect.
F lgure 15 IS a further view showing the table sections arranged for drilling an object, one end of which projects below the other.
Referring to Figures 1 to l, 1 indicates the base of the drill press and 2 indicates the upright frame thereof which includes a pair of spaced columns 3 at the lower part thereof. The drill assembly is indicated generally at A and the driving means therefor at B. Asthe specific form of press forms no part of lmy invention it is not described in detai ln carrying out my invention I secure an arm 4: to each column 3 by means of the split ring 5 formed at the end of the arm and clamped to the column by the bolts 6. Each arm carries a table section 7 which is composed of a horizontal part 8 and a vertical part 9, the section being of angle shape. The horizontal part has a centrally arranged depending stub shaft 10 which passes through a split ring 11 formed at the outer end of the arm and which is clamped to the axle by the bolt 12. It will thus be seen that the arm can be adjusted vertically on the column and it can also be rotated about the column. also be adjusted vertically on the arm and it can be rotated on the end of the arm by loosening bolt 12 and permitting the axle to rotate in the split ring 11. The table sections 7 are so formed that they may be placed in a position with their vertical parts 9 contacting as shown in Figure 2 so that The table section can,
the horizontal parts form a continuous shelf for supporting the workpiece which is to be acted upon by the drill. The table sections may be provided with the grooves 13 and one edge of each horizontal part 8 may be beveled, as at 14.
' Figures 5, 6 and 7 show the table as being used without the drill press. These figures show the supporting columns 3 as being supported by the base 1 and the arms 4t being adjustably supported from the columns 3. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that before described.
The vertical adjustment of the arms on the columns and the' table sections on the arm permits for wide adjustments of the table, and the rotary adjustments of the arms on the columns and the tables on the arms permits the tables to be placed in a great number of different positions relative to each other. Figures 10 to 15 show some of the positions which the table sections may occupy.
My invention permits the table to be so adjusted as to accommodate any piece of work on which V-blocks, angle irons or parallels are used and such a table will also render it unnecessary to use blocks for holding irregular shaped pieces in position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent. I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A table for drill presses comprising a pair of sections each consisting of an angle member having one leg horizontal and one leg vertical, and means to support said sections arranged to permit adjustment of said sections horizontally toward and from each other, adjustment of said sections vertically with respect to each other and adjustment of any side of one section in juxtaposition to any side of the other section and means to secure said sections in adjusted position.
2. In a drill press, a pair of columns arranged vertically in spaced relation, arms each rotatably and slidably mounted on one of the said columns, means to lock said arms in adjusted position, a table section carried by the outer end of each arm and rotatable therein, whereby to bring any edge of one of said sections in juxtaposition to any edge of the remaining section, one of said edges on each section being bevelled, whereby when the bevelled edges are brought into juxtaposition a cylinder receiving groove is formed.
3. In a drill press, a pair of columns, a pair of arms slidably and rotat ably mounted on said columns, means to clamp said arms in adjusted position on their respective columns, a clamp at the outer end of each of said columns, a table section for each arm, each table section consisting of an angle member having one leg horizontal and the other leg vertical having one edge bevelled, and a shaft depending from each table section and received rotatably in said clamp.
4. In a drill press, a pair of columns, a pair of arms slidably and rotatably mounted on said columns, means to clamp said arms in adjusted position on their respective columns, a clamp at the outer end of each of said columns, a table section for each arm consisting of an angle member having one leg horizontal and one leg vertical, each table section having one edge bevelled, a shaft depending from each table section and received in said clamp, and a flange depending from each table section, said flange being provided with complementary plane surfaces whereby the flanges may be brought together to position the table sections in parallelism.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RICHARD A. HARTMANN.
