FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed April 26,1923. Serial No. 634,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA GATES FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and Improved Fastening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
This invention has relation to fastening devices and has referenceto a fastening device which is particularly designed for retaining a storm window, outside screen or the like, positioned within the window frame against the outer guide strip for the outer 7 sash. I I
The invention primarily contemplates a fastening device 'of the character described which will effectually retain the storm win dow, screen or other member positioned in the frame and against the strip or abutment,
The invention furthermore contemplates a fastening device which facilitates the attaching or detaching of the storm. window, screen or other member.
The invention further aims to provide a fastening device of the character described which is so constructed as to permit of the tightening of the storm window, screen or other member against its abutment in order to insure a close contact of the same therewith.
As a still further object the invention provides a fastening device of the character set forth which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and which is thoroughly reliable and highly efficient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a window construction with a storm window retained in place by a fastening device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening device with the elements adjusted to permit of the disengagement of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the elements of the fastening device.
Fig. 1 is a similar view of the other element thereof.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates a window frame, B and C the inner and outer sashes, D the outer guide strip for the outer window sash,
and E a storm sash which is adapted to [it within the frame and abut against the strip D. V
The fastening device which constitutes the invention consists of a pair of shanks 10 and 11 each of which is provided with a wood screw-threaded terminal 12 at one end. The shank 10 is provided with areturn bend at its opposite end which forms a hook 18. The threaded end 12 of the shank 10 is screwed preferably into the strip D to project therefrom horizontally and in a vertical plane parallel to the inner face of the storm window E, the hooked terminal 13 being also disposed in ayertical plane parallel to the inner face of said storm window. The shank 11 is formed at its opposite end from the screw-threaded end 12 with a right angularly bent arm l t the terminal of which is bent into a spiral 15. The Screw threaded end 12 of the shank 11 is anchored in the storm window E and projects inwardly from its inner face to lie at substantially a right angle to the shank 10. When the storm window is positioned within the frame and abuts against the strip D, the arm 14 and spiral 15 of the shank 11 project inwardly beyond the shank 10 and its hooked end 13. During the positioning of the storm window E in the frame, the shank 11 is rotated to dispose the arm 14 thereof in a proper position to allow the same to pass under the shank 10 and through the hookedend 13. After the storm window E is adjacent to the strip D the shank 11 is rotated to dis pose the arm 1 1 over the bight of the hooked end 13 whereby the elements of the locking device interengage to prevent outward move ment of the sash and retain the same in place. In event the inner face of the storm window E is not in close contact with the strip D one or more rotations of the shank 11 by employing the spiral 15 as a manipulating handle will suffice to advance the storm window against the strip D. The facility with which the elements of the fastening device may be interengaged or disengaged is thought to be readily obvious from the drawing and it is to be understood that the same are merely illustrative of one use to which the fastening device may be adapted.
I claim:
1. A fastening device including apair of members one of which comprises a shank having a hooked terminal and the other of which comprises a shank having a radially projecting arm and a spiral terminal on said arm, said shanks adapted to be disposed at a right angle to each other when in place with the spiral terminal of one shank disposed in a plane parallel to the hooked terminal of the other shank whereby upon rotation of the second shank and its spiral terminal in opposite directions engagement or disengagement of the same may be effected.
2. The combination with a member and a frame within which the same fits, said frame having a seat with which the member engages, of fastening devices for retaining said member positioned in the frame, each device consisting of an element carried by the frame comprising a shank having a hooked outer end disposed in a plane parallel to the inner face of the member when positioned in the frame, and a second element carried by the member comprising a shank having its free inner end extending beyond the hooked end of the first mentioned shank, a radially projecting arm from the free end of said shank and a spiral terminal from the free end of said arm.
3. The combination with a member and a frame within which the same fits, said frame having a seat with which the member engages, of fastening devices for retaining said member positioned in the frame, each device consisting of an element carried by the frame comprising a shank having a hooked outer end disposed in a plane parallel to the inner face of the member when positioned in the frame, and a second element carried by the member comprising a shank having its free inner end extending beyond the hooked end of the first mentioned shank, a radially projecting arm from the free end of said shank and a spiral terminal from the free end of said arm, the said second element having threaded connection with the member, as and for the purpose specified.
IRA GATES FRENCH.
